Onkyo TX-SR804?

Anyone know when this will be released in the US? Apparently it's available in Europe.

I really like the 803, but I want HDMI up conversion. The 674 is nice, but doesn't have the THX cert, and doesn't have enough other inputs.

Or should I just get the 674?
I havent heard of the 804 being available in Europe.
Link?

I dont think there will be an 804 before spring.

I have the 800, and I like Onkyo a lot, but its time for me to upgrade to the latest features, so Im going to have to jump ship. Im going with the Yamaha V2700.

I have been checking some German sites yesterday/today and already a few list the 804 'Auf Bestellung' which is 'On Order'. Sure, this doesn't mean that they actually have a single unit yet, but afaik the 804 is supposed to become available during September.

Yeah, that's what I've been seeing too. Just google it, and a bunch of german sites come up.

So does that mean before the holidays for us, or something else?

I've been with Onkyo since my college days, and it's been a good brand for me - reliable, good sound, nice features, good quality. It would take a lot to switch, but no HDMI upconvert in the near future could be enough.

What was the expected delivery date? I still don't see it on any US Internet retailer site.

The sales associate said that it would be about two weeks. I'm going back tomorrow to place my order. I'll post my delivery date as soon as they let me know.
They also have a couple of new Denon receivers in their system. 687? I think.

HDMI 1.1 in this one.....

when are they going to start making receivers with HDMI 1.3 already? I would not want to spend a $1000 now on a receiver with HDMI 1.1.....but then again, some of you might need a piece rather sooner than later.

mid-2007. There will be NO A/V receivers from anyone until around then. The HDMI 1.3 repeater chips are not in volume production until next year.

What do you get with 1.3 (or 1.2) that you don't get with 1.1?

My understanding that, among other things, such as higher bandwidth, 1.3 would carry the full audio and video on new formats such as Blu-Ray.

BluRay and HDDVD also carry DD5.1 and DTS, which currently work fine over HDMI 1.1, so I'm guessing we're talking about multichannel PCM? Do any of the current BluRay or HDDVD players support 1.3, and send out full multichannel PCM over HDMI anyway?

And I'm still not clear if the digital audio connections support multichannel PCM. Some say yes, some say no. They have more than enough bandwidth, but it's unclear if devices are clipping them or something?

In any case, not sure multichannel PCM versus DTS/DD5.1 will matter much for me, as the audio mix for most movies is incredibly front-heavy anyway. If they every start mixing things with real 360 sound, then I'll be happy. Of course, I'll have replaced all my components a couple of times by then as well.

Well my audio setup is geared toward DD5.1/DTS...and my Yamaha HTR5490 is four years old. Maybe it is time for me jump on the bandwagon here?

Actually, if you're saying you want to upgrade to HDMI 1.3, you need to wait until mid- to late- next year apparently, as no devices will be available with HDMI 1.3 until then.

But I'm getting the 804 as soon as it's available.

MIKEPSMITH - I called CC and they said it wouldn't be available until the end of October? Please post if you actually get it this week!
What is the difference between the 804 model and the 674 model (other than THX certification and higher wattage)? Also will there be a model in the interim such as 704, since there was a 703? I looked at the back view of 804 and 674 and they look quite similar. Two HDMI outputs - 1 HDMI input. What are the other significant differences?

Will do...

I'm a little skeptical myself. One CC employee said it would be two weeks but the girl that did the exchange for me said the 804 is in the warehouse. Something about she couldn't sell it to me unless it was available??? I'll probably wait until Thursday to stop by the store again.

I called again and they said it's not even available for pre-order, and it's still not showing on the website.

In fact, it's nowhere on the internet, except J&R Music as a "Coming Soon". Even Crutchfield, which usually has stuff 2-4 weeks ahead of shipment, doesn't list the item.

I've got a sick daughter, so I'll probably swing by CC tomorrow as well as see what they say in the store.

Must... have... 804...

Wattage and THX Select 2 certification are a lot. Also, 1 more digital audio input (less important now with the HDMI inputs and upconvert), discrete power, and a couple other quality-type items. I'm also pretty sure the ability to set audio delays per input are only in the 800+ series.

I current have a 701, which is great, but I need the HDMI switching and upconversion, more inputs, and the per-input audio delay settings.

The 700+ is THX, 800 gets a lot of quality additions, and then the 1000, which is outside my current price range.

The diffrence between the 674 and 804 are (as far as i know)

the 674 doesnt have THX
the 674 doenst have pre outs (only sub)
the 674 doenst have separate front speaker distance settings
the 674 doenst have phono in
the 674 doesnt have RS232
the 674 doenst have ri out
the 674 doenst have an power on and of switch
the 674 doenst have as much power as the 804
the 674 doesnt have absolute volume display
the 674 only has 3 optical in the 804 4 opticl in
the 674 only goes to 100ms TBC the 804 to 250ms
the 674 only have 10hz - 100khz the 804 5hz - 100khz
the 674 has Audessy room EQ
the 674 has Cinemafilter

AbMagFab,
the 674 has audio delay per input, has discrete power

my question is:

i'm in a dilemma what is wise to do ?
buy a 803 799
buy a 674 699
or wait for the 804 999

and is thx really that nice ??

here is a link to an article mentioning thx certification and whether anyone needs it; claims Lucas's own home theater is not THX-certified:

Of course, it is just someone's opinion.

What is that cinemafilter that 674 has?

Really? My 701 doesn't have audio delay at all. Nice they added it down the line.

In any case, I want the 804, for THX, extra digital input, if nothing else.

And I went to CC today - they had it in the system, but it was showing as not in the warehouse, and no delivery expected this week. He did say that if it's in the system, it's likely coming in within 3-4 weeks, but not this week. He did offer to pre-order for me, but at $1099, which is crazy since I think MSRP is $999?

In any case, looks like the end of the month before we can get one.

de 674 was doa so i can change it for the 674 no costs

Best choice is wait for the 804 and pay the difference.

Mainly because most places the 803 was $300 more than the 674. If you want to pay $300 difference for basically nothing then have at it.
