Onkyo TX-SR804? - Page 31

I would love to post the results of my 804 repair, but it has been in the shop for 5 weeks.

I called Onkyo a few days ago to complain, & they promised to call me back the same day.
How many people are using the component in hdmi out on their 804? If you are do you see any video corruption? I notice it mostly on lighter colors, but especially white that it looks like the white is flickering when I use component in and hdmi out. When I'm using hdmi in and hdmi out I don't see any of this.
I used that setup before the hum thing. I did not notice flicker though.

If you would like to get Onkyo USA Management involved call the NJ Headquarters at the number listed in your owners manual and ask for Jack Cooper.

Best of luck,

He said I have a very strong signal coming in from the street and I should try to rewire my cable box directly to the junction box outside the house and that might help. I hate tearing up walls. I am looking at trying a cable TV ground isolator. Has anyone used the VRD-1FF from Jesnen?

or can anyone make a recommendation on a good one to purchase?
Thanks...

Your 804 is defective. For details do an advanced user search for the name "1953".

The worst is my A1. As I stated in the beginning I get the hum when 804 red processing lights come on. When A1 is booting up no lights on the 804 sub is silent. Then when they light up and flicker back and forth the hum is on and off when this happens.

The internal faults within the 804 combined with the use of an HDMI is responsible for the hum in whaterver manner it is produced.

I really like my 804. But to have an AVR that hums really doesn't sit well with me. What can we do as owners to get this corrected. Can we return it for full refund and get the 805 when it comes out hopefully hum free.
I finally got a call back from Onkyo. They have been unable to contact the repair center, so they told me to wait one more day. I then asked about a return, I was told that it might be a possibility. I may ask for the upgrade to the 805.

BTW.... I left 3 messages with Jack Cooper & never got a reply. Today his voice mail says he is out for a few days.

The answer I got on the 805 idea was "no".

I finally got a call from the shop tonight that my receiver was ready for pick-up. I will try it tomorrow night & see what happens. If it still hums, & will be insisting on a refund.
mine still hums, but it's significantly less than before and only happens on certain channels at 0db or above.

we could always file a rip-off report against onkyo. it might not accomplish anything, but you never know. http://www.ripoffreport.com/

cyclonecj - good luck with the fix. I hope it works out for all of us. I have been able to reduce the hum on my box but it's still there around the -12 to -15 ranges. Admittedly my ears are not as good as they use to be but we pay good money for this device and we should not put up with this type of defect. I have another problem with the 804. On non-HD channels when there is intense light or screen action the device flashes or drops-off for just a second. It is not my TV. I have run too many tests. Vanns.com will not allow me a return. Their return policy SUCKS. So before I take my device in for repair I am going to wait for status on the rest of you hum issue. Better to be armed-and-dangerous.

Finally got home & connected the 804..... & Here I sit just humming away.

I will be calling Onkyo in the morning to arrange a return.

After talking with 3-4 morons, I finally got to someone who knew what she was doing. Just got a call back from her & she is having me ship the 804 directly to her so she can investigate further.

When I told her I have been waiting for a working unit for two months & was tired of waiting, she promised it would not be gone for a long time.

Unfortunately, it's already been too long.

Stop! Stop the shipment if you can! It is almost a sure thing that you are not going to receive a "hum-less" receiver. Did you specifically ask if the new unit would be free from "ANY" HUM?

Yes, I made it clear that I was at the end of my Patience , & that this needs to be resolved ASAP. I reminded her that I waited for 5 1/2 weeks for the repair etc.

EDIT: They tried all morning to convince me that some hum was normal, but I would not budge. This is my 4th Onkyo reciever, & I am currently running a DS-777 that is dead-silent, & I expect nothing less from any upgrade.

I have followed these threads but got on board only after I ordered the Onkyo 804. I have the direct TV HR20 DVR installed so changing from Dish is not the answer. I am running HDTV(Sony KDFE55A20) along with a lower level Sony DVD(non HDMI). Most of the hum is heard thru the sub, Velodyne CHT12. I had everything plugged into a APC Backups Pro 1100 UPS and still got hum. Out of depseration I bought a Belkin Home Theater Line Conditioner PF 20 and was going to daisy chain it into the UPS but Belkin instructions say no. I then plugged the 804 and the sub into the Belkin with the TV and DVR connected to the UPS,,still hummin'!!!! I have tried changing the sub cable and just ordered some more from Monoprice but feel like I am just throwing money away. Returning the 804 to Onkyo doesn't seem to be working,,,,any more suggestions. By the way, I had a Onkyo 787 which was running fine but I wanted HDMI connects, which I got, along with a hum!!!

My suggestion is to do what I do -- realize the hum exists, but more than likely it does not effect real world usage. So just ignore it.

I realize some people it does effect more -- but with me, I can only hear the hum if there is dead silence from the source itself (ie. a point in the DVD film where there is no one talking or no music) AND if my volume level is set at -10 from reference or louder.

So for me that's not a big deal. I can live with it.

Do others hear it more easily in real world usage?

It depends on what your watching. Some movies are set so low that you really have to turn it up to get good volume. I thought my 804 did not have any hum but it does but only once it gets to -5. Its dead silent until then. I've only noticed it once and that was watching the movie the Illusionist. The movie required the volume to be turned up to around -3 and on the quiet parts I finally noticed it. 95% of the content will not be a problem. However, once the new models come out I may very well upgrade to one of them.

I'll probably upgrade too, since the whole HDMI thing should be better with the new models -- including adding 7.1 (when its just 5.1) for dolby true hd etc.

I was thinking that the 804 was a stop gap until the newer models any way, so I would have upgraded with or without the hum. I just might upgrade sooner now. Of course I'll let others buy first and report if there is any hum with the new models ; )

Definately going to wait to see the reviews. I still love the Onkyo receivers, they are easy to use, have great SQ and the remotes are great. Hopefully they can fix this with the new models.

yea...I can't argue with caesar1 and "real world usage". For me to really hear the hum I would need to play between -12 and -15 and to tell you the truth that would blow me out of the small room I am in. If I was in my dream entertainment room then I am sure it would be a problem. My real problem is that we all spent well over $600 for this unit. Add in all the cables, speakers, etc.....WOW (don't forget your couch) and it all turns us into perfectionists. But I am not saying that is bad. For all the bucks we put into this stuff we should get our monies worth and not expect known flaws to be ignored.

I fixed the hum buy cutting the grounds from all of my hdmi wires. OUCH!!!

cutting the gronds? how would you even do that?

brings up an interesting question though, has anyone tried HDMI cables with those thick round nobs on the cable near the HDMI plug? i searched online and think they're called "molded strain-relief" it's the same thing you see on the ends of monitor cables and most firewire cables. they supposedly help maintain a clean signal. maybe that'd also help the hum. any thoughts???

You mean ferrite cores?
Just heard from Onkyo... They found no problems of any kind with my 804 & are sending it back.
Strip the insulation about one inch. You will see braided wire first cut that ,then cut the alum. shield. That stopped the hum!!
That won't help me... I get the hum using optical.
