I don't get the big deal either Oliver.

None of my XG's really lose focus until the high nineties - you'd barely notice it on a grid.

For a Marquee, this is a very signficant improvement. To be absolutely honest
about it, the Thomson focus magnetics used in Marquee are....well, they suck. OK? They SUCK.

I believe that NECs use yokes made by Kanto Denshi, which is what I've started putting
into Marquees...but I do some modifications. It's necessary in order for them to run in
a Marquee and deliver their best performance.


The K-D magnetic focusing system is unquestionably superior. No doubt about it.

I am really impressed how much swapping out the focus coils in a marquee did to the difference of the beam size at 40 and 100 in contrast!

This is without a doubt the worst part with the Marquee series in my opinion. At least if you like having a BIG screen. You simply can't get enough light output out of the marquee without having the picture bloom like crazy. Especially the blue tube. If these frankenyokes reduces that problem to this extent then I must commend Chris for a job well done in discovering this.

Maybe this is why people insist on running such small screens on this forum. They can't run any bigger without blooming all to hell. ;)
I'm running my 9500LC at 11ft wide right now though... in an absolutely light controlled room. The walls in my theatre is covered with black out cloth everywhere. =)

At my current throw distance I cannot get the image wide enough at 1080p48 (despite tweaking the timings).
So I'll just live with 1080i96 :)

Bandwidth is the same. Scanrate is the same...how is it different?

1080i 96hz is a better res than 1080p 48 anyway ;)

Somebody has got to carry on the interlaced vs 48 Hz debate ;)

many PJs use different modes when processing interlaced vs. progressive signals. I assume the same is true for NECs.

Bandwidth and scanrate are of course identical though.

At least you do not need to worry about HD deinterlacing :)

I only watch stuff after IVTC (film sourced stuff) using 1080i96.
So the source provides progressive sequences at 23.976 frames per second. These get re-interlaced for output at 95.904 fields per second.

You gotta love those PG plus's. Very under rated PJ. I have a 9 PG Plus with brand new (factory, not rebuilt) tubes in storage that I would not hesitate to put back up in place of my 4600HD. The only problem is that the tubes would wear much faster than a 9" tube. The highest rez I ever tried on it was 1440X960P via PC and it did it no problem. I did not have a scaler at that time that did that though so I stuck with 720P.

With the processing and scalers we have now it really opens up what you can actually do with the Plus and Extra. It may or may not require a new mechanical set up but what the heck.
