Current/future laws regarding GPS usage in California?

Does anybody here know the current GPS restrictions/laws for vehicle usage in California.. or the upcoming laws?

I just purchased one for local usage (I'm horrible at any sort of directions so I need someone to literally tell me which way to turn to get to where I need to go). I was told conflicting restrictions by 2 seperate salespeople.. and can't find any information regarding the laws online.

I was able to determine that mounting it on a windshield is illegal.. but is mounting it on a dashboard not a problem? One person I talked to said it was fine to keep anywhere on the dashboard as long as it doesn't touch the windshield.. Another said that it must be kept "out of reach of the driver at all times" regardless of where it's at.

I was also told that starting on Jan. 1st 2007, it will be illegal to place anywhere on the dashboard.. and it would need to be placed somewhere on the front panel (like near the CD Player.. glovebox.. etc..) the other person told me that isn't true at all.

I couldnt find any information leaning towards either side when searching online, and figured maybe someone here would be more familiar with the subject. Any information regarding the Current laws, Future laws, and whether it is (and will stay) "Ok" to keep on the dashboard would be greatly appreciated.

Very glad to hear that then :)

Considering that the job theyre in is to help sell more of these units (and I believe that at Circuit City, they actually make commission off of each sale), they should have their facts straight -- If I heard I wouldnt be able to keep it anywhere on my dashboard (and had to keep it nearby the gearshift, or hanging from the glovebox) that would be an instant dealbreaker.

Thanks again though - Very glad to hear they were wrong.
