Mine just started blinking this week too. But I think it has to do with daylight savings time. The firmware that shipped with the TV still uses the old daylight savings time schedule so right now the clock is an hour off because it thinks daylight saving time ended last weekend. This somehow screws up the guide. This also happend earlier in the year when daylight savings time began before the TV expected it too and I remember it happening last year. Wait and see if the lights stop blinking this Sunday when daylight savings time actually ends.

By the way, I've read there is a firmware upgrade that fixes this. However, I'm not really sure it matters since my understanding is that the guide becomes usesless when the analog signals go away in February.

could be (may be)....I have gone through 4 time changes. indeed the lock is off (as it is this week) but i have not had any blinking problem.

btw, the guide is correct, time and all-- only the banner shows incorrect time

So is there any firmware upgrade for the Pio 5070 and if so, what are the pros and cons??
yes, there is a firmware update which is applied through the cablecard slot but pio does not offer diy upadates. what i have read in the forum is that you have to convince pio that you have a problem and if they think firmware will fix it, they will arrange it for you. i think the blinking blue light thread indicates some have gotten it for that issues but it has not always fixed the problem

TV Guide has contracted for their signal to be carried by the local CBS digital channels after the PBS analog contract finishes.

We all may have to put a lot of pressure on Pioneer to update the firmware on our sets to look for the TVGOS data on the CBS digital channel instead of the PBS analog channel come February.
Do you have information that would lead you to believe that all that is needed is a firmware update? The digital version of TVGOS was introduced the same year that these TVs were manufactured. I have been assuming that TVGOS on my set was dead meat come February.

The links below has some info on the viability of tvgos with some 7th gen Pioneers after Feb. '09.

can firmware alone fix the problem?? what i understand that the signal format will also change --- currently it is sent in the vti of analog channels and in for digital channels it will (could be) sent in some thing psip (?)

Thanks for the response, but what does the firmware offer as an upgrade on the TV?
i have not seen any detailed list of fixes or upgrades like you see for windows etc. however, what i concluded from various posts that pio has done updates in a few situations to fix specific problems (not incremental improvements) -- like lock up of HMG problem or 12 blue blinks

i recall reading in one of the threads (i think 12-blue blinks) that the updated firmware fixes the DLS issues but pio is not offering it just for that problem ( i guess it is too expensive) since a tech visit is required.

Thanks for response, i guess i do not need it then since i still have an excellent picture on my 5070 and it just turned 2 years old this month.

yes, exactly....mine is 26 months and looks as good as day 1.

if there is no problem, i would not try to get the firmware anyway as you risk creating new problems (there are few post indicating that)

enjoy

Anyone have some suggestions for good settings for a Panasonic BD35 Blu Ray player? I just got back from Sears, where I got one for $148, and can't seem to find any recommendations for settings. I have a 5070HD still. Thinking of just trying my HD-A2 settings and see how they look, but I am sure they will need some tweaking from there.

Dustin,

You really can't use other people's settings.

If you don't have one of the calibration DVDs, you need to get one.

Yeah, I have been trying to put it off on buying the calibration DVD. Now that I have a BR player, I guess I might as well .

I have the same equipment and same question...

So, we have to use a BLURAY calibration disk, right?
On my Pioneer 51 bluray player, I wound up with the same settings whether I used the bluray calibration disk or one of the SD disc.

Problem is, I don't know if that carries over to all players.

If you already have one of the SD disc, I'd at least try it.

Also, on Sony disc, there is an easter egg on the main menu of BD disc that takes you to some calibration screens. I'm not awake enough at the moment to remember the remote control keystrokes, so you'll need to google it.

I have had a Pioneer 5070 for about a year now. Great set. As you know it has 2 HDMI inputs. I have my Comcast Cable Box hooked up to one of them and my Toshiba HD X-A1
hooked up to the other. I would like to purchase the Magnavox Blu-Ray player on sale for a great price at Wallymart tomorrow. Can you purchase an HMDI cable that was 2 outputs (for X-A1 and Blu Ray) and 1 input for the 5070? I have to many HD DVD's not to use the Toshiba. Now Blu-Ray is the future. Help Please

I picked up the Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S350 player today and hooked it directly to my Pioneer PDP-4270 plasma TV via HDMI, and when going through the set up and trying to display the 1080p message (verifying it takes 1080p) i get nothing at all. All other resolutions would show fine in the set up but not 1080p.
I know my set will play 1080p fine as my old roomate had a ps3 and we had played blu-rays from that on there in 1080p fine before.

Any advice on what to do about this? should I go and return the player and get a new different one?

thanks in advance

You need an HDMI switcher. Monoprice has a simple 2 input switcher that works great. I bought it couple of years ago for 19.99. I am sure the price must have come down now. Check monoprice website. You can hook up two components to the two inputs on the switcher and the output goes to your TV. You make the selection of the video component by pushing (manual) the button on the front side of the switcher. The switcher is a very small box (4x3x1) with couple of buttons and doesn't need any electic power or battery.

Your TV is capable of displaying 1080p 24fps. Check if your S350 is set to 1080p or 1080p/24. If it is set to just 1080p (which by default is 60fps) then you will not see the picture on your TV. You have to explicitly set S350 to output 1080p 24fps. If there is no option to force 1080p 24fps on S350, then you are out of luck. I am not familiar with Sony S350.
Yeah I got it to work. I guess that the menu in the S350 just cant be displayed in 1080p/24 as if i fix it on 1080p and turn on the 24fps part the setup main sony player menu wont show at all. Putting it on Auto then when I have a bluray in it puts it on 1080p when playing.

alternately, if your tv is withing 6-8 feet of the comcast box, you can use component cables for it....you will hardly see any difference in pq..try it

I have a Panasonic BD35 and a Pioneer PDP-4270 and had the same experience. Setting it to output 1080p yielded a blank screen but setting it to Auto got the 4270 to tell me it was getting 1080p. The 24p works too. The only issue that I see is that with Auto, DVDs and other non-1080p content come in as 1080i, whereas the player was supposed to upscale to 1080p. I am not sure if that makes a whole lot of difference, though.

Yep exact same thing as on my set as well. DVD's only upscale to 1080i when it should go all the way to 1080p. Theres gotta be a way around this without the use of a AV Receiver you'd think wince they advertise 1080p upscaling.
Say what you want, but I prefer my Pioneer 51 upscaling SD DVD to 1080i going into my 6070. Picture just looks cleaner.

It might be because you loose data going from 480i to 1080p to 720p when compared to 480i to 1080i to 720p.
Not sure if anyone has posted but I wanted to mention that I have the XDE player with the 6070. Picture looks amazing compared to my oppo 970.

Remote codes for BDP-S350 (BX1) and Pioneer 5070HD
I have the pioneer 5070HD and am trying to enter the remote codes in the Pioneer remote to control my Sony 350 player. Tried all the codes listed in the Pioneer book, but none of them seem to work. Anyone here have the correct code?
OK,

I haven't seen much activity here over the last few months, but I know that there are a ton of these tvs out there right now, and blu ray players are finally coming down to earth. My question is: what to do with blu ray and a 6070? I have been reading opinions around the web, and many people are posting that on a 720p set, blu ray does not look better than dvd. I have an extensive dvd collection so I am on the fence. Should I get the Oppo 983H and forget blu ray? Should I wait for the new Oppo blu ray player? Should I buy another blu ray model? I tend to think that what people are writing on the web about dvd being as good as blu ray on a 720p set is incorrect because a friend of mine gave me an old Toshiba HD-A1, and "Planet Earth" looks unbelievably better than anything I have seen on dvd!

So does anyone have an opinion?
