how to use speedfan to get core2duo CPU temp?

I'm not able to get CPU temperature readings using speedfan. All I can see is the CPU usages and the hard drive temperatures... Do I need to do something special other than just installing the program? I went to "Configure" but still nothing.

I have a core 2 duo E6300 and a Intel DG965OT mobo.

As a side note, I downloaded a program called "Core Temp " which gives an idle temp of 65 deg celsius - where do I find out what the max temp is before I should start getting worried? Thanks for any info.

Sounds like Speedfan couldn't detect the sensor chip of your motherboard. It's probably too new for it to support it. Are you using the latest Speedfan? Latest so far is 4.29.

I have an e6300 as well and my coretemp reading is around 42 deg at idle and when running orthos or other stability tests I am just under 60 deg. This is also overclocked to 2.9 ghz.

I believe intel states a safe temperature of 61 deg.

I would say something is not setup correctly.

Actually, CoreTemp on my machine is quite high too - at 3.0 GHz on my E6400, Coretemp reports 53C idle, and can hit 68C under load. It is prime95 stable for 3 days straight. I believe this is a sensor calibration issue and may also be motherboard specific.

The majority of people report temperatures from CoreTemp in the same range as my results.

Well, he stated he's at 65 degrees idle which would put him 75-80 degrees at load with prime/orthos. Don't even know if he's even overclocking?

I've found that most are under 60 degrees coretemp at load with decent cooling. Not saying it wont work at temperatures higher than that, but I sure would be worried if my CPU was 65 degrees idle.

If he isn't overclocking than it could mean he needs to check the heatsink contact. If the heatsink grease doesn't contact the heatsink in the middle of the core, then it would mean he needs to apply more grease - it seems most Core 2 Duo chips are slightly convex (mine too, by probably .05 millimeters), meaning the center of the CPU won't touch the base of the heatsink!

The idle temperature I reported was when it was running a few programs and I just let it do that for 10 mins till the temperatures stopped going up. Maybe I don't understand what idle means. Anyway, I stopped all programs and the "Core Temp" program gives a temperature that stays at 57C.

In short here's my setup -

- Core 2 Duo E6300
- Not overclocked
- Core Temp at idle with no programs running = 57 deg C
- Core Temp at idle with some programs running = 65 deg C
- Thermalright SI-128 heatsink without a fan to keep the PC quiet.

Basically I'm trying to figure out if it's ok to use my heatsink without a fan on top (since the heatsink is right next to the case fans anyway) without messing up the CPU. Photos of my setup are here.

Ah - that explains it! No fan. I would stick a low RPM fan on their - or use your motherboard's CPU fan header and use Speedfan - if you can get it to work with it - to undervolt it to make it inaudible.

Hopefully you verify have an old version of speedfan - then you can try the latest 4.29 version and see if that recognizes the fan controller chip on your motherboard!

You should download a program called Orthos (you'll have to google it, I don't have it)...it is basically Prime95 except it supports dual-core CPUs and is easier to set up than Prime95 for dual cores. I'll bet you the temps will hit 80C. You'll definitely need a fan when at 100% CPU usage.

Success!! My idle temps are now in the low 40's without a fan on the heatsink

Pictures are here -

Thanks so much for all your help.

Nice! And your pics are very helpful - thanks for that. Maybe I should try that out - I usually apply a rice-grain sized amount, and spread it with a razor blade.

Hi,
good hint, but my problem seems to be ICH temperature going to 80°C when running Vista idle Desktop. Reading the temps from BIOS (1/17/2007) after shutdown.

Sugo SG01-E single Fan build with
DG965OT, Silverstone NT06-Lite under a Seasonic S12-380
E6300 CPU

@sthapit: do you have a temperature reading from your ICH ?

Hi,
there was also a ICH temperature reading firmware bug with DG965OT board,
i rearanged my inlet fan so my ICH temperature stays at 70°C,
still high ?
