You've never had a SD-DVD player break? I bought a Sony DVD player i 1999 (DVP-S715, I think it was), and that broke in 2004. I also bought a Sony DVD jukebox in 2001. This broke just a couple of weeks ago. Consumer electronics doesn't last forever.
The reason why it's "necessary" to buy a spare HD DVD player if you have a huge HD DVD collection, is that no stores will be selling HD DVD players in the future. If his player breaks for any reason, getting a replacement could be hard. Sure, ebay will still be around, and he'll probably find one there. But odds are that these players will be used (who knows how much time they have left) and overpriced.
Besides - if you have a $5000 movie collection, spending $100 for a spare player is really a pretty cheap insurance against obsoleting the library.
