1080p resolution giving "Unsupported signal" with DVI-HDMI?

I just recieved a 35ft HDMI cable and a Male DVI to Female HDMI adapter via monoprice.com yesterday and havent been able to output 1080p to my KDL-XBR2 screen. The LCD supports 1920x1080/60 over HDMI but the highest resolution I can get displayed is 720p.

My ATI 9700Pro set to 1920x1080: True Color, 32-bit 60Hz or interlaced at 30Hz both end up in the "Unsupported signal. Check your device output" error code on the TV. I tried 2 different CAT driver versions 6.6 and 6.9 and neither made any bit of difference.

My only guess is that there are some graphic card/ tv settings I am missing or that the monoprice DVI-HDMI adapter doesnt support 1080p since it is only single-link DVI (seems strange since the DVI to HDMI cable they offer has a single-link end and someone mentioned it supported 1080p)??? The HDMI cable itself should be fine since it seems a few other AVS members have tested it here. Anyone have experience with this specific adapter or have any other ideas for me to try?

one quick check is to try a shorter cable. sometimes longer runs are more prone to signal degradation. also, i have had great luck with monoprice, but did get a bum firewire cable recently.

another check - can you input that resolution into your computer monitor? that might confirm that the cable is ok.

I would contact monoprice and make sure that:

1) That cable should be able to make that long of a run at 1080p60
2) That adapter(when added to the long cable run) will be able to pass 1080p60

Forgot to mention that I also tried the 6 foot HDMI cable I recieved from monoprice and that exhibited the same behavior. The HDTV I am using is the KDL-40XBR2 which as far as I know is 1080p and other people have posted on this board about using a PC as source input through HDMI.

In the process of contacting Monoprice right now.

Only thing I can think of is the adapter is not letting the cable(s) transmit 1080p but I don't see how thats possible. Either that of something is not setup right on the tv or computer end of things??

To get 1920x1080@60Hz you may need to play with the "reduce blanking interval" settings for the ATI card. I don't remember what the ATI drivers called the option, something like "Alternate DVI mode" and there was one other setting. Also you may need to play with the sync +/+ +/- -/- or something like that.

The cable definitely will do 1920x1080@60Hz (unless it is defective) I tested all the cable lengths up to and including 50ft for 1080p@60Hz. I tested with both ATI R9800Pro and nVidia 6600GT.

The adapter could be problematic also, but many times if the adapter is having trouble, you will see sparkles rather than no picture.

The reason you need to use "reduce blanking interval" is because DVI/HDMI max bandwidth is 165MHz and 1920x1080@60Hz using normal timing intervals is greater than 165MHz. Using reduced blanking interval it can fit in 148.5MHz, within the DVI and HDMI specs.

Could also be that it's not properly detecting your display, or it's max resolution capabilities. Does it show the right display in monitor properties and does it show 1920x1080p when it's set to only show modes this device can support?

IF it thinks your display can't handle 1080p it will put it out as 1600x1200 or less with scrolling desktop enabled. That may be what's going on as your display probably won't know jack about 1600x1200.

If it doesn't recognize the display at all you can set it to sony fw900 and that will allow true 1080p.

Lastly if you ever went into the section of display properties that allows you to center the display on your screen to avoid overscan that makes it send out a non standard signal. Set that to default.

The 9700Pro seems to detect the max 1920x1080/60 resolution fine but I'll play around with manually setting it to the fw900. Hopefully, sfhub's info about playing around with the "reduce blanking interval" will fix the problem. I had been using edited/modded catalyst drivers with the CCC replaced with the standard "old" config panel, thus I had never even seen that option before.
