Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV... few questions about it (and my setup) - Page 3

mine never goes louder than -25. I can't even imagine 0 let alone -10. I'm glad I didn't spend $$$ for the model that offers 30 more wpc.

I love this receiver..the MCACC worked awesome. I demo'd the opening battle scene in "Master and Commander" for some folks and their jaw dropped. This is great scene to test out your rig by the way.
My only concern now is the LFE issue. I anticipate getting an HD-DVD player soon and it seems the firmware is hard to come by. Albeit I have'nt tried yet. I also bought my VSX-81 from an unauthorized seller.

What do you mean by, "the firmware is hard to come by?"

Is there any sort of workaround for the LFE issue?

Is it only an issue when listening to PCM over HDMI?

The firmware update is out at a very few select service centers across the country...according to this thread...http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=787551

And yes..this is only an issue if your listening to PCM via HDMI....which you must do with some of the Toshiba HD-DVD players to take advantage of the new sound formats.

Thanks for the quick reply.

For anyone not interested in reading the long threads about the LFE issue, please understand that from what I understand, the LFE "problem" is only an issue if you are listening to uncompressed, PCM audio over HDMI.

Otherwise, this receiver has been rockin' my house for a while, with no problems at all. The HDMI upconversion is terrific, and it is getting the most out of my Klipsch RF-82's, I promise you.
Actually there's no HDMI upconversion on the 81TXV's - it only transcodes. Speaking of, has anyone tried to transcode component input to HDMI out using the 81TXV? It makes the picture much darker - you can compare by feeding the component directly to the display. Supposedly this is a known bug fixed by a recent firmware upgrade as well but some people have also said they haven't seen the problem.

You're right. It simply passes the source's resolution through the HDMI cable. I love the scaler in my tv, and I love having only one cable connected to it!

As to the component to HDMI issue, I just realized that I am seeing it too, but only with my Xbox 360. My DVD's don't seem to be any darker. How can one component source be darker, and another not be?
Can anyone point me to a *good* explanation of the different surround "listening modes" in the 81TXV? The manual just does not cut it as far as I'm concerned in this area. The basics I understand, such as the source formats of DD vs DTS, and the extended versions like DD-EX and DTS-ES, etc.

But when getting into the "listening modes" like PLIIx with and without THX and other combinations... I don't really know what this is doing. And when would I want to use one of the "THX" settings vs non-"THX" (i.e. PLIIx vs PLIIx+THX). Please help! Thanks.

Interesting so it may depend on the source as well. That might explain why only some of us are seeing the problem. My Panasonic RP-82 dvd player looks noticeably darker when fed through the receiver (and HDMI to display).

I totally hear ya. I just leave everything at PLIIx+MV+THX and forget about it.

I heard that the best surround is with "pure direct" selected.

just kidding. I prefer the THX modes as well.

Actually I think PL is pro-logic..a much older sound format. If you have 5 speakers and a sub you want to be in Dolby Digital or DTS for the best sound. Then if you want you can "add" THX Cinema on "top" of it.
There's a big difference between the old Pro Logic and Pro Logic IIx.

Some good links...
http://www.dolby.com/ (pick "Dolby Pro Logic IIx" in the first dropdown, bottem left of the page)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Pro_Logic

I guess the main thing I don't get is what the THX modes do to the sound and when is it "proper" to have them turned on or off. If it's just personal preference, then I'd like to know what differences I should be hearing so that I can listen for them and decide which settings I like better.

I'd love it if the 81TXV manual would go into more detail on some of these things, but I haven't found what I'm looking for there.

True..but the bottom line is if you have a 5.1 source (most movies) you want Dolbly Digital or DTS and not DPLIIx........

DPLIIX is for enhancing formats that aren't 5.1 encoded...

I thought page 78 of the manual did a decent job describing what THX will do for you...

Actually no, DPLIIX will enhance 5.1 to 7.1 as well as 2.0 to 7.1.

I stand corrected. The point I was trying to make is that if you have a 5.1 speaker setup and your playing a 5.1 source you want the 81 to be decoding in DD or DTS. I think the 81 also includes a mode where you can simulate 6.1 or 7.1 setup with your 5.1 speakers...

Does anyone here know how to assign component input to "Video/Game" select?
Dynamic Range Control (DRC)...The default for this is off. Does anybody set it to seomthing different..i.e. 'MAX"

High Bit/High Sampling...Does anybody turn this on???

Thanks for this thread guys.I had pretty much figured out that I wanted this receiver to replace an old 509 Pioneer and this thread pretty much seals the deal. One question about using an iPod though this receiver though. The Pioneer site says "ipod cable included", but you still need to buy a Pioneer Ipod dock don't you?

Thanks

I don't believe so. The cable simply connects to the bottom of the ipod. Then, the manual says you can navigate the Ipod menus on the tv screen, with your remote.

I've messed with Ipods, and the cable looks like a perfect fit for the port on the bottom of the ipod.

Some folks are now posting that there is no firmware update for the 81. Has anyone here heard that the 81 DOES have a firmware update either available or in the works?

My local technician told me his support website only lists an update for the 82 and 84.

I have a Westinghouse 42 inch LCD and I am using a DirecTv HR10-250 HD tuner/Tivo. I have had problem with loss of Video signal(snowy screen) when I use HDMI to HDMI but I don't have any problems using HDMI to DVI cable and use a DVI port on my TV. It seems to me that it might be some "handshake" problem on the HDMI port on the TV. Is anyone using the Pioneer 81 with this TV and if so are you having any problems running all your video feeds though the Pioneer into the Westinghouse via the HDMI port?

Thanks

Has anyone in this thread actually confirmed that the 81 has the LFE problem for PCM?

Pioneer (every time I call them) keeps telling me that while the 82 and 84 have the problem, the 81 does not.

That's what I'm wondering too.

I sent e-mail last week and I've got no answer. I'm guessing we should start to call them all together.

I've changed my mind. I'm getting the Denon 2307CI. It turns out that that receiver has the same HDMI features (the ones I need, anyway) as the 81txv.

No more worries about LFE!

I have a 12% coupon for BB this weekend and would like to get this receiver. I wish we could get an answer for the LFE problem(if there is one).

Where do you get a 12% coupon for BB?
