Official Sony XBR2 (60" & 70") Owner's Thread - Page 342

I'm going to contact Sarah but I don't think I will accept a refurbished unit (replace one bad tv for potentially another one). I still have over 1.5 years on extended warranty from Sony and if they want to keep replacing OB I'm fine with it. I had one OB replaced and the second one is already bad. I'll make a service call immediately if exchange is not successful.

Do you people, that were offered refurbished tv, have extended warranty from Sony?

No extended warranty beyond 1 year. Another reason for the refurb 65w5100, is that is currently the largest set they have available (other than the $19K 70" LCD) and I don't want to take a 10" hit from my 70xbr2 for the 60ex700. Sony really doesn't have a large variety of sets to choose from here.... actually, really two, the 60EX or the refurb 65w5100. Depending on the size of your XBR2, there are the most likely choices.
cnet doesn't think much of either set.

gave both only 3 out of 5 stars.

sony is supposed to be releasing new sets in july.
anyone know what sets are going to be released?

Hello, I understand that it's the largest in size compared to the 70 XBR2. I have a little less then two years left (twenty-two months) on my five-year warranty. I may go with the second OB replacement, which is an option given to me from Sony or take the refurbished 65W5100 or let the extended warranty cover me until March of 2012 and see if Sony offers anything then.

I have XBR2 60" and I was very happy with it when it worked correctly (no yellow discolorations).

What did Sarah ask for as a proof of the first OB change? I have had my R60XBR2's OB changed once too and have been searching my old receipts and till now have not been able to find it. Darn!

And as I understand you have to e-mail her a pic of the defective TV picture?

Anything else? TIA.

I was offered a refurbished KDL-60EX700 with a 90 day warranty for my 60" SXRD. If it was a new unit with a 1 year warranty, I would more than likely take it. hmm

She looked mine up by my telephone number. The funny thing is that she could originally find both repairs to my XBR1 by my cell phone number but not the one to my XBR2 until I gave her my home phone number. Try giving her alternate phone numbers that you might have used.

What if someone has it fixed by a private company, not Sony?

The set was out of warranty anyway. I just found out that Sony had extended the warranty on this set too.

You should send in the repair bill and get reimbursed.

Same thing I was offered. I said that it was not acceptable w/o a 1yr warranty. I told them that I have bought dozens of refurbed Dell computers and they always came with a full warranty. They said they would check and call me back. Still nothing. I am quickly loosing faith in Sony and after 40 years may become a former customer.

I read the settlement if you want to call it that. This is why I am taking a TV and letting them keep those awful terms.
Two things I don't want:
1. Another Sony product, ever.
2. A non-LED, LCD set.

Guess I'll wait until this third OB turns green and buy a 65" Panasonic plasma.
I'll need a non-dumbo ear 65" to replace my 60" and fill the hole where it sits.

""Discolorations" means color anomalies in the picture display of the Televisions described in the Complaint, including, but not limited to, green blobs, yellow stains, green haze, yellow lines, a softer and washed out picture, lack of color uniformity, poorer rendition of dark colors, "blotchy" rendition of the color black, problems with "grayscale," and convergence problems."

Thanks for posting that! After the 1st OB was replaced in my XBR1 for the "blotchy" blacks, I now have the "softer washed out picture" with the current OB. This might help get me a replacement offer - now that it's recognized as a primary OB defect in this settlement.

So you don't want a LED LCD model or you do want a LED LCD model?

Update on the class action lawsuit against Sony on Q006, XBR2, A2000, A2020, and A3000 models

People have started receiving their Class Notices, and I urge you to opt out or object to the settlement prior to the July 23rd deadline. I have extensively updated my Class Action Lawsuits page, including links to important documents, as well as instructions and suggestions for opting out or objecting. This includes suggested topics for your statement of objection. Objections from people who have experienced multiple optical block failures would be particularly valuable, as Sony has claimed that failures of replacement optical blocks are only "stories of a handful of consumers" and that they are rare "anomalies" that are "not representative".

The current optical block warranty extension for XBR2s expires at the end of this month. The proposed settlement extends the warranty for only two additional months (through August). Alternatively, if Sony fails to make parts available within 14 days of when you report your problem, they will pay you $350 (60") or $400 (70") for the depreciated value of your TV, and then you can make arrangements to throw it away.

There is no evidence that Sony has done anything to fix the optical block problems in the individual SXRD models in the Class Action since their original production, and many people are now reporting failure of their replacement optical blocks on AVS Forum and elsewhere. In fact, Sony explicitly states in the Class Action Notice that they do not make any guarantees on the efficacy of the repairs beyond the stated extended warranty or 90 days (whichever is longer).

There is a Fairness Hearing scheduled for August 13th. The more objections (and potentially opt outs) the judge sees, the more likely he will send the parties back to the negotiating table.

I prefer plasma; no motion blur, good off center viewing.
The LED LCD's I've seen aren't bad, but to me the plasmas are better.

Sony SXRD 2 Rear Projection Television Class Action Settlement and Information

If you plan to opt out, please carefully read paragraph 8 on page 8 of the
Complete Class Notice which is near the bottom of the link ccvtech has provided. If you want to opt out and exclude yourslves from the settlement,
your letter must include all the information specified in that paragraph.

I would recommend all California residents opt out as there is a pending class action regarding these sets filed in San Diego federal court I believe, in which
California's more friendly consumer protection statutes will probably get owners a far better result than the nominal benefits offered under the terms of this settlement.

I will definitely be opting out of this unfair result.
Steve,

I'm reading it differently. The "Final Class Notice 2" states:

If you are a citizen of California, and you purchased or received as a gift a Sony KDS-R60XBR2, KSD-R70XBR2, KDS-50A2000, KDS-55A2000 or KDS-60A2000 model television you should be aware that there is a pending Class Action Lawsuit in California State Court (Weaver v. Sony Electronics, Inc., San Diego Superior Court Case No. 37-2009-00086048-CU-BT-CTL). You will be excluded from and forego any rights you might have under, the California Class Action unless you opt out of this lawsuit. The California Class Action seeks relief under California Code that may not be available through the Cardenas or Meserole actions. The court in that case has denied Sony's Motion to Dismiss and the case is now in discovery.

As I read that, it certainly appears that the California court system is not going to recognize the validity of the Cardenas case or its Proposed Settlement. I vote to opt out of the New York case!

You don't need to apologize for anything, As I said in my p.m., we wouldn't
be here without you. Ccvtech and myself are dong just a little to supplement
your efforts.

Thanks again for all your work on behalf of us consumers!
I agree with estoniankid. You've been immensely helpful to a number of us Steve and one little misread doesn't affect that.

I found the San Diego lawsuit on the S.D. Superior Court's web page case but there's not much info:

TRACY WEAVER VS. SONY ELECTRONICS, INC.
Never mind...

If you click on the "Register of Actions" link near the top, it takes you to a wealth of info: dates, actions, etc.

For instance, the next item on the agenda is:

Civil Case Management Conference rescheduled to 06/18/2010 at 08:30:00 AM in C-64 before William R. Nevitt at Central.
There are a few other class actions filed against Sony Electronics in San Diego Superior Court. Unknown if any of them are specifically for SXRDs:

Case Number: 37-2010-00091808-CU-BC-CTL Date Filed: 05/10/2010
Case Title: Richard Goldschmidt vs. Sony Corporation of America Case Status: Pending
Case Category: Civil - Unlimited Location: Central
Case Type: Breach of Contract/Warranty Judicial Officer: David B. Oberholtzer

Plus a number of them have been moved to federal court.
I stand corrected. The lawsuits are filed in California State courts, not the federal courts so any relief granted in those class actions will affect California
residents only.

Wonder why all these suits are filed in San Diego? Is that where Sony USA is headquarted?
