After the initial problem I decided to purchase the extended warranty from Sony-style for around $300. Then the lawsuit happened and I received an e-mail from Sony saying unless I opted out I would get $700 + a refund for my warranty purchase. The lawsuit was settled and I waited, but I never received anything. It didn't bother me that much because my set still looked great. I changed the bulb about a year ago with no issues. About 3 mos. ago I started noticing small grey spots in the upper right area of the screen. First there were 6 spots more or less and within a month there were approx. 15. I decided to call a local Sony repair shop as I thought there might be dust on the optics. A guy came out and thought he saw some spots on the mirror inside. He said he could fix the problem without some help and rescheduled. Before he left I mentioned that I had an extended warranty from Sony and should I call to see if it was something that might be covered. He said no, that it was a simple cleaning and it wouldn't be covered. The next day he called backed and said go ahead anf file a claim as it might cover the service call. I did and they gave me a claim number. A week later the service guy came back out with his helper. They couldn't get the front panel off so they were able to get a cloth on a stick to clean the mirror off. As they were putting the panel back on the tech noticed the spots were not on the mirror, they were on the back-side of the screen. He cleaned them as best he could but said he couldn't remove them completely. They said they would call Sony and request a replacement screen. About 2 weeks went by before I got a call from the warranty office saying that Sony no longer made the screen. She said someone from logistics would be in touch to offer a replacement set or a cash option. I thought I was going to get on of these pathetic offers I had read about here or they would offer me $700 or so. Sure enough they called and e-mailed me a spec-sheet for a KDL_HX65929 3d tv. I was shocked because they didn't want + cash. The set they offered was retailing for around $3800 but was being discontinued so I opted for the cash option. I should receive the check for $3663 this week. I never in a million years thought I would come away with this sweet a deal after all of the nightmares I have read here over the last few years. I guess sometimes it pays to buy an extended warranty (which btw would have ended in 2 days)
I would like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience. Mine was quite different.
My 70xbr2 from Tweeter purchased in Nov. 06 with 5 year ext. wtty. through Tweeter (ServiceNet) underwent OB replacement (by Sony, not ServiceNet) in late 09. I started to tinge yellow by Oct 11, right before my warranty ended. I called ServiceNet and local repair service came out and took my tv to the shop and installed OB ($1700 repair, $1500 of which was OB). It was 5x worse than the one that had just started to fail. They ordered another OB and installed it in home last week. It had a 3 inch vertical stripe running the length of the right edge and a 2 inch pink stripe running across bottom of screen. ServiceNet wanted to try another replacement, but I complained loudly and they quickly assented to move into the buyout phase. They based buyout on offering me a comparable replacement tv (Mits DLP 82740) at Amazon's retail $1689.00, or the cash. I took the cash and just purchased tonight the 82840 wit 5 yr warranty from HHGregg for $2220 taxed and delivered. It will come Saturday. Two days ago, upon learning of buyout from ServiceNet, I called Sony back after first contacting them in Nov 11 about trade in deal (best offer was 65hx929 for $2800 - msrp = $6000k, now $5400). This time, Sony only offered me the standard crap 60 Ex for $1370 or 55bx for $579. They did not even offer the 65hx model again. I spoke to the VP of the SonyListens team in Nov 11 and they would not offer me any type of cash buyout as an alternative. I presume the difference between GWNELSON's situation and mine is that he bought the warranty through Sonystyle, but I am shocked that Sony would pay $3800. I am happy for you, but I would love to get a fraction of that back from Sony. (I paid $5k plus tax, plus stand, plus $600 warranty at Tweeter).
Any thoughts from GWNELSON or others would be appreciated.
Oh, and I never got notice from Sony about the class action settlement despite the fact that Sony had replaced my OB already in late 09. $700 plus refund my warranty of $600 would be music to my ears at this point, though I understand how GW felt back in the day.
Thanks.
