Anyone see this before?

That's how mine started off. Then after a few weeks I began to look at that banded area closer on lighter backgrounds. Within that area was a light green/yellow tint. As light as it was, it was enough to get me a sweet deal thru the Sony replacement program on the HX929 this past week. :-)

Hey guys,
Just got my replacement TV from Sony.
This is how it went down for me:

I have a KDS-R70XBR2. Optical block went bad after a few years. Sony replaced the part. TV worked great for another couple of years and now the OB is failing again. Big green blob in the middle of screen. Last week I emailed the SonyListens email address listed on the "I have a defective sony TV" facebook page. They replied after a few days, giving me a phone number and asking me to call them. So I call and they make me the following offer, telling me I have 1 week to decide:

KDL55EX500 $675.00 + local sales tax
KDL60EX720 $1375.00 + local sales tax

I basically took this offer as an insult considering not even 5 years ago I spent $6000 for a top of the line 70" XBR2 TV. I then find Sarah Kepler on the defective Sony TV facebook page. I send her a message on there and tell her how I feel about that offer. She gets back to me with a new offer: XBR65HX929 for $2800 + local sales tax.
Good Luck!

Hello all, I pop in here every couple of months to see what the staus is of the replacement program. I also have a 70" XBR II. I'm on my second bulb and the only indication of the OB failing is in certain dark scenes my blacks have a blue tint. The TV is still very viewable, but my 5 yr. ABC Warehouse warranty is up at the end of this month. So I called them rather than calling Sony and spending a couple of thousand for an LCD XBR and losing 5 inches.
ABC will not repair the TV, they are going to replace my TV with a new Mits. WD73740. Can I get some opinions on this please? I am now going to go research this Mits WD73740. Thank you.

Not being a big DLP fan myself, I'd ask if they will just give you the cash as a buy-out. Then use the money toward a Sharp 70" I've got the 732U and I'm very happy with it.

Hey guys - Just thought I would share my recent experience with my 70" XBR2. Bought the set in 07 and within a month I had tint issues. Got a replacement set with no problems from Tweeter. After the initial problem I decided to purchase the extended warranty from Sony-style for around $300. Then the lawsuit happened and I received an e-mail from Sony saying unless I opted out I would get $700 + a refund for my warranty purchase. The lawsuit was settled and I waited, but I never received anything. It didn't bother me that much because my set still looked great. I changed the bulb about a year ago with no issues. About 3 mos. ago I started noticing small grey spots in the upper right area of the screen. First there were 6 spots more or less and within a month there were approx. 15. I decided to call a local Sony repair shop as I thought there might be dust on the optics. A guy came out and thought he saw some spots on the mirror inside. He said he could fix the problem without some help and rescheduled. Before he left I mentioned that I had an extended warranty from Sony and should I call to see if it was something that might be covered. He said no, that it was a simple cleaning and it wouldn't be covered. The next day he called backed and said go ahead anf file a claim as it might cover the service call. I did and they gave me a claim number. A week later the service guy came back out with his helper. They couldn't get the front panel off so they were able to get a cloth on a stick to clean the mirror off. As they were putting the panel back on the tech noticed the spots were not on the mirror, they were on the back-side of the screen. He cleaned them as best he could but said he couldn't remove them completely. They said they would call Sony and request a replacement screen. About 2 weeks went by before I got a call from the warranty office saying that Sony no longer made the screen. She said someone from logistics would be in touch to offer a replacement set or a cash option. I thought I was going to get on of these pathetic offers I had read about here or they would offer me $700 or so. Sure enough they called and e-mailed me a spec-sheet for a KDL_HX65929 3d tv. I was shocked because they didn't want + cash. The set they offered was retailing for around $3800 but was being discontinued so I opted for the cash option. I should receive the check for $3663 this week. I never in a million years thought I would come away with this sweet a deal after all of the nightmares I have read here over the last few years. I guess sometimes it pays to buy an extended warranty (which btw would have ended in 2 days)

Got so wrapped up with family and other issues these last few months that I forgot about my extended warranty expiring last month. Oh well, set's starting to look like it may finally go psychedelic colors before too long, but still is doing pretty well all things considered -- just have the feeling that it's just around the corner -- b&w films seem a bit more off from time to time, color films not really much difference, if anything just slightly... but usually don't notice anything out of the ordinary. Has it really been five years?

I have a DLP and now I have my replacement I will never have a tv with a bulb again!

You'd be taking a step back with the Mitsubishi.

I have a KDS-60XBR and there is a rectangular area about 26" X 3.5" ... (1/2 the width and 1/8 the height of the entire screen) ... that practically overnight has hundreds of dead pixels ... what's going on, and is it fixable or should I just start shopping for a new set?

Bought 60" XBR2 in Feb 2007 from Amazon. At the same time purchased a 5 year extended warranty from Sony Style for ~$300. Picture started going green & had the optical block replaced Feb 2009 under the original (not extended) Sony warranty. Picture again deteriorated to green so I contacted the Sony Extended Warranty people Dec 2011 (Logistics as they call themselves). Got in under the wire as the Warranty runs out 2/1/2012.

Logistics people very friendly & cooperative. They arranged for a local tech to come & verify problem which they did. After much back & forth (replacement set, $$, repair) Sony picked repair to everyone's surprise as the total repair cost will be ~$1.5-2K.

"Bob" was here yesterday & put in the 3rd optical block for this set in about 2 hours. Picture looks great but for how long? In a way I was disappointed as I really wanted $$ to put against a new plasma flat screen but I can't fault Sony for the way they handled the situation.

$1500 for the 60NX720
$1125 for the 55HX820

This is what I was offered as a 2006 60xbr2 owner, after I asked for a better deal. I was originally offered the 60EX for $1375. I have no idea how good the 55HX deal is they are offering me is. The price on the 60NX seems very high considering most here were offered that TV for much less. Not sure what I should do at this point. I hate to move from a 60 to a 55. Not sure if its worth it there either on the 55HX820.

Any opinions are welcome!

You shouldn't accept anything less than a 55HX929. Contact Sarah Kepler on facebook. Ask for it. Your XBR2 was top of the line, flagship model at the time. Only it was a 60", not 70". So if u ask me, you should get the equivalent today!

Do what I did. Buy a Sharp. They offer several 60" LCD and LED-LCD's in that same range that are very nice and get exceptional reviews. And you get to tell Sony to stuff-it!

The offers are set in stone I am told and that is exactly who I contacted. Seems now that we are in 2012, the good deals are going down the tubes.

I am going to do what HomieG suggests and head to my local Costco for Sammy or Sharp. They have some solid deals in there. I don't think Sony will see my money again for awhile.

I think it's a trait of the tech. I know a few people who have had optical blocks fail in a similar way on front pros. One friend has been through 3 x DILA hd 350's which developed staining in under 750 hours. DILA is jvc's version of SXRD tech. The combination of a bright picture and low fan noise seem to cause this type of tech to fail. Maybe they should be using LEDs for this sort of setup instead of hot bulbs.

Weird. I know someone who got the same exact deal as me less than 2 weeks ago from her. He had a 70" XBR2.

Even if they offered me the 65HX for 2800, it isn't something I can do right now. I was hoping for less on the NX really. Wish I could afford to drop more for a better one but my wife would kill me.

1.Is 1500 still fair for the NX?
2.Would the Samsung UN60D6450 or the Sharp LC-60LE835U be comparable to the 60NX?

I wouldn't mind spending a little extra to get away from Sony if one of these others are comparable. I know both can be had for under 2k. If all prices are equal, what is the move to make?

I am going to check out this Sharp 60" LED at Best Buy. It's on sale for $999.99 plus tax. Even free shipping, if that is necessary.

If interested, you can buy the three-year SquareTrade warranty at Costco for $59.00 which apparently is different than the on-line SquareTrade warranty. Looks to me that the one at Costco apparently will start on the expiration of the manufacturers warranty --- according to the Terms&Conditions link there (while the one purchased direct from SquareTrade starts on the day of purchase).

I would like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience. Mine was quite different.

My 70xbr2 from Tweeter purchased in Nov. 06 with 5 year ext. wtty. through Tweeter (ServiceNet) underwent OB replacement (by Sony, not ServiceNet) in late 09. I started to tinge yellow by Oct 11, right before my warranty ended. I called ServiceNet and local repair service came out and took my tv to the shop and installed OB ($1700 repair, $1500 of which was OB). It was 5x worse than the one that had just started to fail. They ordered another OB and installed it in home last week. It had a 3 inch vertical stripe running the length of the right edge and a 2 inch pink stripe running across bottom of screen. ServiceNet wanted to try another replacement, but I complained loudly and they quickly assented to move into the buyout phase. They based buyout on offering me a comparable replacement tv (Mits DLP 82740) at Amazon's retail $1689.00, or the cash. I took the cash and just purchased tonight the 82840 wit 5 yr warranty from HHGregg for $2220 taxed and delivered. It will come Saturday. Two days ago, upon learning of buyout from ServiceNet, I called Sony back after first contacting them in Nov 11 about trade in deal (best offer was 65hx929 for $2800 - msrp = $6000k, now $5400). This time, Sony only offered me the standard crap 60 Ex for $1370 or 55bx for $579. They did not even offer the 65hx model again. I spoke to the VP of the SonyListens team in Nov 11 and they would not offer me any type of cash buyout as an alternative. I presume the difference between GWNELSON's situation and mine is that he bought the warranty through Sonystyle, but I am shocked that Sony would pay $3800. I am happy for you, but I would love to get a fraction of that back from Sony. (I paid $5k plus tax, plus stand, plus $600 warranty at Tweeter).

Any thoughts from GWNELSON or others would be appreciated.

Oh, and I never got notice from Sony about the class action settlement despite the fact that Sony had replaced my OB already in late 09. $700 plus refund my warranty of $600 would be music to my ears at this point, though I understand how GW felt back in the day.

Thanks.

Mine was somewhat like yours. I had a 70XBR2 that turned green on me the first year I owned it. I had the OB replaced. The television ran for two years with no problems until the green started to come back again. I contacted Sony and they offered me the 65HX929 for $2400. I had a five year contract with Service Net and they bought out my five year contract for $2100. So it was a no brainer on what I should do, I went with a new 2011 November built 65HX929 for $300.00.I still have the 70” in the family room of which I replaced the OB myself and it looks as if it was new again! I love the new Television and once again the 70XBR2 too!
Did you buy the Service Net warranty through Sony Style or a brick and mortar retailer like Tweeter? When did they offer you the 65hx and the buyout on the warranty, please?
Thanks.
Incidentally, Sarah Kepler at Sony Listens called GW NELSON's (I did not identify him/her) a lie. I am not saying that, but just reporting what she said.
I am strongly considering a small claims suit. I have read Steve Linke's excellent website about such tactics and I am studying the issue further. The New York Class Action and notice/opt out issue will likely be my biggest hurdle, but I didn't get notice of the class or proposed settlement in 2010.
Any thoughts from members on small claim actions would be appreciated. DON'T violate any confidentiality agreement you might have signed in a settlement though.
Thanks.

I got the warranty when I bought the television from Tweeter. Sony offered the set way back..... I think in August 2011. I had to wait three months before I got it. Sonly only offered the set at the price I posted, but Service Net bought out the rest of my warranty. I had contacted Sevice Net and told them that Sony was giving me a new TV because of the OB's being bad; and that it would cost Service Net more then $1800 just to replace the OB, and it may only last a few months after doing so of which they would have to do it again. I had nine months left on my five year warranty so you can see why they offered what they did.

So I started experiencing the same optical block issue on my 70" XBR2 that everyone else did. I called Sony and get the same BS runaround where I have 2 options. 1) They will refer me to an authorized Sony repair center where I can take my tv and pay myself to have it fixed. or 2) pick from the discounted TV's. I was offered:

KDL60EX720 for $1,375 + tax
or
KDL55BX520 for $575 + tax

I was hoping for one of the offers for a tv for $200, but apparently that's not an option right now. Any idea how this offer compares? Thx!

Update today - Precision says that the Warranty company is declining to repair. Now it's up to Sony; it's their Extended Warranty and frankly, I don't care that they lost $2.9 Billion last year.

Can a couple of folks here with a KDS R70 XBR2 kindly please check their sets to see which way the cooling fan air on the back of their sets blow and post the results.

I took the back of my set apart for cleaning. I took the whole cooling fan assembly apart. The fan sits inside a shroud.....(you can see the into the fan and see the light from the lamp)

Now putting it back together it looks like you can put the cooling fan into the shroud backwards if you are not careful. The fan will install either way to either suck air or blow air.

Since I forgot to check wich way the air blows can someone please check for me by carefully checking to see if it sucks or blows air out of the back.

The location of the fan port as you FACE THE BACK ( not facing the side of the tv but facing directly the back ) is on the lower left corner area JUST NEXT to the HDMI inputs you would be able to easily see the light shining from the lamp...

Thanks in advance

I've never taken this apart, but the it's definitely a suck-in fan. When I had my set installed through the wall of my garage, I had ductwork put in to suck in A/C air from the house. Here in Arizona, my garage can get to 130+ degrees!

hey thanks barry can you physicaly check the fan though by putting your hand over the duct (you don't have to take anything apart)cause I checked and double checked I am positive I installed it correctly but the air blows out not sucks in.

Again I can see the part number on the fan while it sits in the shroud its written in blue and says "...sff21c..." so I know I installed it correctly and the wires are conected properly they all match up but the fan blows air out of the set???

By the way my fan is rotating clockwise if that helps. Please physically check.

This is puzzling and I am stuck.

Thanks in advance
