I would not bet on at this point. But you never know if you don't try!

anyone moved to the sharp quattron from this set? i was thinking of going from my 60 to a 70" quat.

So, after about 5 1/2 years, my 60xbr2 has finally started going green. Normally I'm a fan of going green, but not in this case. I noticed my TV was getting a bit dark/greenish, but I originally thought it was a fading bulb.
I've gone thru 3 bulbs and the last one was aftermarket so I figured a new bulb would do the trick. Well, it didn't and now it's getting greener by the day.

I've read thru hundreds of posts, but I have a few questions if any of you experienced folks have a minute.

It appears my entire screen is turning green a the same rate - as if someone had messed with my color balance. Is this normal or does it usually start as a small blob and then spread?

My extended warranty expired in March so I'm at Sony's mercy. Is Sarah still the person to contact and is the best way to reach her thru Facebook (and which Facebook page is the right one)?
Any advice on how to best negotiate? I definitely don't want to go smaller than 60".

Also,I know some people have been repairing their OBs. Can I be certain if I'm going green it's my OB? And, has anybody had a bad experience doing this (such as, it didn't fix the problem)? Is Tristate the best place to go for OB repair?

Thanks in advance for any information you can share.

Looks like a pretty good box from the reviews.

Surfer,

I've got a 60xbr2 myself that's dying. Can you tell me if you contacted Sarah directly and whether you had any additional offers on other models?

Also, were you still under warranty when this happened (my 5 year warranty ended 3 months back)?

Thanks in advance.

Not a reply to any previous posts...just a question.

I am the original owner of a 60" XBR2 and am still on the original lamp. The "please replace lamp soon" message has been coming on for awhile now--and I have a Sony lamp that came with the set as a bonus when I bought it. The set does seem to bet getting dimmer, or is that just my imagination? So, replace the lamp now--or wait until it goes dark?

Thanks all.
I'd replace it. The tv isnt getting any younger and it wont last forever despite Sony's original marketing claims.

The lamp has been slowly getting dimmer though-out it's life. Sometimes as the lamp approaches failure it will get dimmer much faster -- my lamp did this. I'd say that if it's too dim for your viewing, go ahead and change the tamp. You'll be surprised by how bright the new lamp is.

I was in the same way with my 70. And yes, it made a hig difference to change the bulb. One should have been included in the original box, anyway. And we all know we're living on borrowed time. I'm now on my 2nd OB after the original, and this went in this past January, just before the expiration of my Extended Warranty.

Enjoy it at its best while you still can.

WOW. Replaced bulb, what a difference. I now remember why I bought this TV.

No green that I can see.

Anybody interested in buying a KDS-R60XBR2?

After accepting one of Sony's offers on a discounted new TV - I bought the 55HX850 because with the discount it was the best value and money is a little tight right now - I'm not sure what to do with my 60xbr2 which has started turning that yellowish green color. I could purchase a new optical block and repair it myself, but I'm in an apartment and don't have room for two TVs of this size. And my girlfriend likes the fact that the 55" doesn't take up so much room.

So, if anybody is interested in buying my 60xbr2, let me know. It's in perfect condition other than the fact that the OB needs to be repaired/replaced. It's lived in an air conditioned home it's entire life without any pets or children (not that I've got anything against pets or children). It also has a brand spankin' new philips lamp (have receipt) in the original Sony housing.

Obviously, it's not worth shipping the TV anywhere, but if you're within a couple hours of zip code 91601 I think we can work something out. I'm just looking to get a few bucks and I'm not sure what do with it. So, feel free to make an offer.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I was finally able to save some money to see if there's any recourse on by 70XBR2. I just contacted SonyListens and Ms Kepler.

I'm just hoping that the program is not over. I might be able to swing a 65HX929 if they do offer it, but it seems next years models might be hitting stores soon, and I can only guess the response to inquiry on those. I really don't want to go below 60" if possible, and I think a 50/50 on a compatible class unit would be fair; seeing how the 70" XBR2's were top of the line when I purchased it. I didn't expect the set to last forever, but not even hitting 6 years is hard to swallow when they were flaunting 30 years of use.

This is unfortunately not the first issue in the past few years I've had with Sony brand electronics. I bought a launch unit PlayStation 3 as soon as they were available for $700 in November of 2006, which failed with a YLOD within two years. It was out of warranty, but I then paid $150 for an exchange to a refurbished 60GB unit as my only recourse, only to have that fail almost two years to the date with another YLOD. Deciding that the reliability of the refurbished launch units might not be up to spec, I spent $300 on a new model slim Playstation 3 (and couldn't be happier). But, that's over a $1000 investment in console hardware in one generation that doesn't include my love of Sonys first party game software, PSN downloads, or peripherals.

On the TV, It's really a shame, as the picture is still top notch and one of the best out there. Unfortunately every show is a nice TMNT shade of green.

I don't even know where to start if I have to get rid of this behemoth.

Good luck. Be persistent in your efforts to get an offer on a suitable model and if you don't think you're getting a big enough discount, keep digging. You always have the option to walk away and never buy Sony again.

That said, please let me know if you figure out what to do with your old TV. I've got a 60XBR2 sitting in my hallway with a blanket covering it. I haven't figured out what I'm gonna do with it and my girlfriend want it out of here...

Thanks in advance.

I respectively ask again, has anyone in Canada gone through the replacement offer process, and if so, please advise details.

It's going to be the same process. The only difference will be the amounts and models of the offers. Review post #11856 and start the process. If and when you call, the first level you talk to will give you some crappy offers. Ask for the next level up and negotiate a better offer/model. For example, my initial offers didnt include a 60" and after negotiations I got the KDL-60NX810. But that was 18 months ago. Just dont expect to get a new 4kHDTV. Reveiw the last couple pages of this thread to see what others are getting.

Thanks in advance.

Worked out a settlement deal with Sony, but unfortunately the deals from earlier in this thread has been altered. They're not offering much, and what they are is not comparable to my investment in a 70" SXRD XBR class set.

They have a very specific list now, and the XBR-65HX929 is no longer on it (no longer sold it seems too). No luck pushing for the newer 950, which I do understand. They also would not throw in a pair of 3D glasses for free, which is stupid, as I know they make a killing off of accessories. I wish I made contact back in May when I first noticed the issue cropping up, but I didn't have the money or time for a deal then. C'est La Vie.

I ended up going with the deal for a KDL-55HX850 though because I found a friend who was in the market for a nice LCD, and agreed to buy it off me for slightly more than I'm getting it from Sony. Going to turn around and fix my XBR2 via Tristate or a fellow I contacted on Facebook, and hopefully get a few more years out of it before upgrading at that time (4K? better3D? no more edge lighting? OLED?). 70" to 55" wasn't realistic, nor was dropping from their XBR class to a KDS. Not at the price I paid for the XBR2 that is. Win/Win in a bad situation I figure as far as finding a buyer for the offer.

So while I'm glad I did find an option that works, it's not exactly up to par with the trouble I've personally had with Sony technology the past 6 years, of which I've made significant investments. I appreciate them doing anything this far out, but they did sell us on 30 years of life when I bought the damn thing. Next time I'll be looking a 6 year warranties wink.gif

Just pulled my 70 inch xbr2 light engine- The_bull where do I send the starbucks card? Your pictures are awsome.

Now that I have the green machine apart I have a question, can you adjust the over scan on this lens, and has anyone else done it?

Planning to do mine soon. I sold the KDL-55HX850 to a freind that was in the market for a 55" TV for $1500, giving him a good discount (Especially on MSRP) and giving me the cash to repair my 70" for free.

Just tossing it in the mail to go to Tristate. I looked at some LCD's, I want the XBR2 back.

Does anyone know whether the HDMI on these sets has ARC (Audio Return)? I'm changing my Processor/Receiver to an Onkyo 709, and I'm thinking that I might decide to dump Dish and do my OTA through the Sony + online stuff. Thanks.

No, XBR2 predates HDMI 1.4a (required for ARC)

A friend of a friend wants to sell me his 60" XBR2 for $500 OBO including the custom stand and brand new bulb. I'm in the market for a new TV and don't have a ton of money to throw around, so I wanted to know if this is a good deal or not, or if these defective Sony issues are too much of a red flag. It looks like I can get a 50" LED TV for around 800-1000 at my local electronics store. I hope someone can throw me a bone with their much greater knowledge of the current market. Thanks so much.

How old is the TV, and has he had the OB replaced already once or twice or thrice?

Based on feedback on this forum and my own experiences as well, I'd say an Optical Block problem WILL happen, if not already. If the OB has already been replaced, expect the dreaded green or yellow stain to reoccur at some point. I would recommend getting an LED LCD set.

I don't know if I would call it knowledge or not, but much depends on the set and the environmental conditions it was used in. That is also true for pretty much any used TV. Purple Plasma snakes, humming LCDs, humming plasmas, dead LED's in the display engine, you name it they have got something or other that makes them less then perfect. I can send you a picture of 50 inch LCD dying while on display in store (I was shopping for something to replace my XBR2, I didn't find anything I really liked).

However, it is a fact that the Sony will go green, so how long does it take becomes the question. My XBR2 was the last unit from the show room floor and it had 4000 hours on it, I put 4000 more on before any issues came up. 8000 hours is allot of TV. If it was me, I would get the used TV for 300-350, or get a new one. If you can't walk away from 350 bucks I would not buy anything.

When working the XBR2 is still one of the best digital images money can buy, and LCD's are not getting more expensive every day.

Good news. Did you have order the repair through their website, or just call and tell them what you're looking for? I noticed on the website it appears they don't have the option available?
