I intended to buy the 60, but when I saw the 70 in my Sony Style I fell in love. After fearing a loss of PQ by going to such a massive screen, my fears were unfounded.

Incidentally, running Madden '07 @ 1080i through component feed on my XBOX 360 did not produce any visible game lag at all.

I also followed the hints found in this thread, bought an SUG512 stand, and modified it with a Dremmel...worked like a charm. I needed the angled footprint of this stand rather than the linear design of the new one.

Anyway, thanks to everybody here whose posts I have fed upon for months to help guide in making a great decision!

If I understand correctly, you are using the SUGW12 60" stand for the 70" XBR2? If so, are you keeping the speaker ears attached? Better yet, can you post a couple pix of the finished result?

The stand is rated 132 lbs. 5 oz. maximum for the tv. The 70" weighs 161 lbs. Do you see any problems developing?

Are you able to use the safety strap?

Thanks.

Dresden, I disagree with you on one point about the setup Monkeydust has. A fridge or a minibar should be within arms reach. Of course if you had the blonde the distance would not be as important then you are getting into issues of servitude. I guess i'm greedy, I want the blonde and the fridge close by. Like the old McDonalds BLT containers, you keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool. Oh, I am also working on a 70" xbr2. Got a local shop down to 20% off msrp CDN a couple of weeks ago but when I went in today and brought up the recent price drop they acted like I just uncovered a secret CIA conspiracy. I told them I would call next week after they had a chance to call "head office" to find out what is going on. Has anyone in Canada seen one of these in a store yet? Every store I talk to says they are on order and in the system but no eta.

I have Dish HD. Comcast cable is in my area. Are you saying Comcast has a better HD signal? If so, I may have to switch.

Dish degrades some of its high-definition channels, but not all of them like DirecTV. But yes, you would probably get better HD quality on Comcast. If the Comcast in your area uses Scientific Atlanta equipment, their DVRs are pretty pathetic (in terms of usability) compared to the latest DVRs from Dish Network, however. In that case, your only option for a quality DVR would be something like the Tivo Series3.

If your Comcast uses Motorola boxes, then they will have a Tivo software upgrade available in February/March.

That said, you can still get full quality on your DTV/HDTV locals from an off-air antenna with your existing Dish or DirecTV HDTV box. Virtually all Dish and DirecTV receivers will integrate DTV/HDTV locals from an off-air antenna directly into the program guide with the satellite channels. There are a few markets where the quality of the cable HD locals is better than those available OTA, but that is the rare exception, not the rule.

Until I got it home!! Wow what a monster!
I'm sitting about 12' away & I'm getting used to it!

Yup, Rideau Centre Sony Store in Ottawa has one up. Gorgeous.

And 20% off? Nicely done. The sales guy at Rideau Centre tried to tell me that the CDN price wouldn't go down before XMas because the just-announced US drop matched the earlier CDN price drop (5499->4999, around CDN launch time). Riiight...

9' is about as far away as I can sit from my TV. But, yeah, you get used to it after a while. I notice that I have to make major eye movements to follow the action on the TV instead of slight movements for a smaller size. Still got some aclimation to go.

Anyone know if I can use the older SU-GW12 stand with the 60XBR2? The XBR1 and 2 look physically the same, but I don't have the measurements of the TV base.

Thanks,

Well I've only had it a day but I'm VERY happy with it. I think most people would be.

It just goes to show that any new product can be defective so buy from someone who will take care of it in a timely manner.

They didn't care of the LED set very much and said most people would be better off getting a plain Samsung 87 or 88 series set or an LCOS set if you see RBE.

I HATE C-NET and I think the reviews they give are not worth a pinch of sh!t. I have read / watched more than a dozen of their reviews that are out and out wrong on facts and specs. In my eyes they hold NO WATER !!!

Engadget is a site I like

As for the price ... I was already given quote and the Sammy will be about $850 less.

I am sure it is a RULE to not give prices on this forum so I will not ... but FOR SURE the Sammy LED DLP is pretty much the $850 less.

As for the PQ on the Sony being "WAY" better .... can you maybe expand a bit on that??

Did you see them side by side or at least see them both ????

If you did ... what made the Sony "Way" better in PQ ??

Yes -The SU-GW12 stand can be used with the XBR2 .

There are 2 ways to adapt it for the XBR2. Go to this link to find instructions on one way to do this. If you look at the posts in the vicinity of the one below you will find the other..Dremel approach. Both work well.

It is officially announced the 360 will output a TRUE NATIVE 1080p via the VGA "and" Component connections.

I have the pod cast about it and have read about it only a day or so ago.

The VGA port will allow not only games but also MOVIES to be either upscalled or if they are a 1080p source to be displayed respectivly.

So I could use my 360 to the fullest with Games and HD-DVD by using the VGA "OR" Component connection . That leave my HDMI's free for my PS3 since I am not sure if MS will be putting out a HDMI cable yet.

-------

On a side note

If the TV accepts less than 1080x1920 I would only assume it would pillar box it, BUT if it outputs the full 1080x1920 (as with the new 360 update VGA will output) it should be full screen.

That is why I am second quessing the XBR2 ... it does not accept 1080x1920 in the VGA port ...........I know the manual says it does, but folks on this forum have stated that indeed it DOES NOT ....... BUT ......... the Sammy I am taking about (HLS-5679W LED DLP) DOES accept 1080x1920 over VGA and would show it FULL screen in TRUE 1080p.

That is why I am now not sure if the XBR2 is for me.

BUT ... if it is THAT MUCH BETTER than the LED DLP ..... well, maybe I will have to bend a bit.

THIS IS MY DILEMA

Hahahaha, I am also in Ottawa and that is the Sony store I deal with.

It was me who called and let them know about the US drop and they seamed less than happy to hear me say it.

Oh well ..... if I got with the XBR2 ... I will wait to save some more cash !!!

BTW .... has it been confirmed that the component on the XBR2 can only accept a 1080i max signal and in "CONTRADICTION" to what the use manual says ..... is it true that you CANNOT get the VGA port to accept a 1920x1080.

If the VGA does not accept 1920x1080 ........ what does it actually accept ??

Based on posts earlier to this thread, the XBR2 scales VGA input to 1280x1024 for display. I don't have first-hand experience with this, so I can't say whether these individuals were doing something wrong.

I followed KTTV's settings and the picture looks great but I have some issues. I'm receiving HDTV from a DirecTv HR10-250. To me the HD picture looks grainy. Nothing like a HDTV feed from say a Tweeter. Maybe my settings are off or maybe its this box?
Also, the Tivo menus don't look that good either. I have regular cable from Comcast also and receive my HD's locals through the Tv's Digital Cable tuner and they look great. So maybe its not my settings but the DirecTv unit. Any info would be much appreciated for someone new to the big screen scene. Thanks in advance.

Is your HR10-250 display setting at 1080i, or something else?

I really would like to hear from XBR2 owners who have played XBOX360 on their new tv's. I am very curious about how the gameplay is on these tv's, especially the 70-inch monster. Any chance anyone could post some screenshots on these tv's. Are there any lag issues? Is the picture quality excellent or does blowing the image up to 70 inches lead to some degrading of the image?

Please....surely someone out there has to have an XBOX360 AND a new XBR2???

Wow!

I got the opportunity to upgrade to the xbr2 from the a2000 on a deal that I couldn't pass up. I had the a2000 since July and loved it. I knew the 60xbr2 had the "wings" that I am not a fan of but I could make space for them. I saw the xbr2 of couple of days ago next to the a2000 and became very tempted to upgrade. I am so glad I did!

Here are the things that I see improved over my a2000.

-Convergence is the best I've seen on any TV. This could be luck of the draw, but white lettering is pure white except the top right corner where it resembles how my a2000 looked everywhere (minor bleeding).

-Color uniformity is excellent. The auto program screen is absent from the very minor green haze I had on the a2000(No blob on the a2000, just slight haze)

-The drc in mode 1 set at 25/100(Mr. Foos recommendation) brings out so much more detail that I saw before. WOW inducing for me.

- Standard def is defintely better with drc mode 2. I don't watch alot as I have the Dish HD and local digital HD channels, bit at least when I do I know the quality will be better.

-The 180 watt bulb(Spare included: Other manufacturers take note) seems to give the picture more "pop". It is not overly bright at night in auto 2 as I was concerned that this could possibly be the case.

-Handling of motion appears to be better.

KTTV Images: Thanks for the urging to upgrade and I sure hope your theory is right about the new light engine finally being exempt from SXRD's known nemesis.

Anyway: This is an outstanding television! I will post my settings in the tweaks thread as they are very similar to my a2000's but adding the drc settings.

This was my PM reply but I thought I'd post it here for others to read...

Hiyas. So far, I played Kameo, Dig Dug, Lumines, Burnout, Dead Rising, Lost Planet and Dead or Alive and haven't notied any lag. Gaming is a completely different experience on a 70" HDTV.

As for settings, I was just trying to set them to something similar that is listed in the xbr2 tweak thread. Oh, that and switching my 360 over the 1080i in the setup and switching the switch from TV->HDTV on the component cable. I didn't do these at first but they made a world of difference. The graphics look amazing (never had or played on an HDTV before).

Ok, now if I was to nitpick, the two things I see wrong would be my stand is a few inches too high at 19.5" high and the screen may have some sort of anti-glare coating that kind of is noticible on occasion (if that's what I am seeing). But, the screen has absolutely no glare either though.

I plan on using it for 360, PS2, Gamecube, PS3, Wii, and my computer. World of Warcraft should be fun.

Can't speak on the 70", but I have the XBOX 360 and a 60" XBR2 and is nothing short of awesome. The picture clarity and vibrance of colors are incredible. I haven't noticed any lag at all. I can't wait to see what the PS3 looks like on this set (or any set for that matter)!

Thanks. Just a follow up... Know if I could use the current A series stand (SU-RS11X) for the 60XBR2? Anyone know the XBR2 base dimensions?

Just asking because I think the SU-RS51U stand might be too wide for my living room.

Thanks,
Lee

For those interested: Amazon's product page for the xbr2 has a detailed write up of the inner workings of the xbr2's. The sentence " The most advanced video processing block in the history of Sony television" caught my eye.

Yes, that is the setup I'm using. I removed the speakers, and the TV looks perfect on the stand (I'll try to post pics tomorrow). As far as the weight, I'd be surprised if it became an issue, as the stand is very solid and the TV sits nicely on it with pretty wide weight distribution. Surprisingly, the safety strap snapped right in. I didn't expect it to be the same but it was.

To reiterate, I used the Dremmel method posted earlier in this thread, and it was very easy (I've never used a Dremmel before). Alot of aluminum dust to sweep up though
