Official Sony XBR2 (60" & 70") Owner's Thread - Page 48

I figured out the HDMI issues I was having, the Toshiba HD-A1 is picky with its HDMI handshake - You need to have the Video input on the TV selected first, then turn on the HD DVd Player and give it about 1 1/2 minutes before anything will show up- Batman Begins looks awesome on this set in HD-DVD - As for the VIP 622 per Dish, there is a known issue with the 622's where HDMI stops working - They're sending me a new replacement box/new generation receiver..

I've been watching the 6-" for 2 days now with DISH HD - Some programs look great, but I' really dissappointed in some- Watching ESPN HD I have lots of artifacting and Mosquito noise - Even Discovery HD has alot of background noise - Is this normal/is it my source? Or is it the TV??? Is there any way to check????

The HDDVD's look pretty awesome though.... Would an OTA antenna make a difference??? I'm cursed with relaly good eyes and its driving mke nuts, my wife thinks I'm crazy!

Now that we know that the Sony XBR2 does 1080/24p, it would be interesting to know if it plays back at 48 or 72fps.

I would really want to hear an official MS announcement of the damn HDMI cables and what they will offer before I buy the KDS-R60XBR2, and it's FULL (well not really) 1080P HDTV bs.

Like will the 360 HDMI output allow for DVD's to be upscaled as high as 1080p resolution or will upscaling be 480p maximum, limited by CSS. (I bet someone here may know that answer!)

Anyways here is a couple of the links I've found for the unconfirmedcables so for far:

Xbox 360 HDMI Cable (Microsoft)

GameStop Universal Premium HDMI Cable

I'm seriously thinking about the Algolith Flea. Some good reviews of the Mosquito, the higher end version of this in the Video Processor forum.

Hey, the 70 is a $1000 cheaper, the exact price of the Flea!

If the XBR2 can really do this, to me this is huge news along with everything else about this display.

Oh, I just noticed he's talking about a Sony XBR3. Is that a newer model than the XBR2?

That's Sony's upcoming line of 1080p LCD displays.

Hey all, nice to meet you all... I'm new to this forum, having just bought my XBR2 and had it delivered last week. Using Comcast HD service and coming from a 36" Panasonic. Man, I can count the gray hairs on Kenny Rogers head pitching last night (am in Detroit). Incredible...

Couple of things I'd like to ask....

First, setting the stage, I have the Comcast DVR connected via HDMI to the XBR2. I also have SVideo connected to a Panasonic DVD Recorder. The recorder is also connected to the XBR2 via HDMI. I am finding that sound all of a sudden cuts out. I noticed it when I was recording and using the DVD Recorder input. I thought it might be the recorder, but noticed that it happened when I was using my DVR input.

I can correct it by changing the channel on the DVR, or stopping a taped program on the DVR. I'm using high quality cables and haven't changed any setting on the XBR2. I did notice the HDMI port on the DVR isn't very solid. I'm thinking it may be the DVR and not the XBR? Any thoughts?

Lou,

Without using the the DVD recorder, do you have any problems with audio dropout of pixelization through your DVR?

>>do you have any problems with audio dropout of pixelization through your DVR?<<

Hey Jim... I'm a novice at this, so let me translate .... if you're asking if the sound drops off without using the DVD recorder, yes. Happened yesterday. Sound just stopped. I changed channels and sound came back.
Lou,

Sounds very much like a problem with the signal level through your cable company cable system. Even a too strong cable signal can causes these problems.
I've got Comcast coming out this week. We'll see. Thanks

I know it isn't specified in the manual, but it is possible that it will still work.
Have you tested this?
I don't know any 1080p YUV component source at the moment.
Which one did you use?

Does the XBR2's actually accpet 1080p over component? The Samsung models will do 1080p over Component and VGA ( HLS-5679W LED DLP). If the XBR2's do (but I am pretty sure they do not) would do it .. that would be fantastic. Anyone confirm either way ??

Louppls

I had the same issue with Comcast DVR using S-Video to old Toshiba RPTV (changing channel or a quick rewind-play would fix it).
But, since last week I've been using HDMI to new 70XBR2 and don't recall it happening yet.
My guess is it's the Motorola STB.

Pls keep me posted on what Comcast Tech says.

Also, just curious since you're also in the Detroit area... Did you have a lot of digital noise on Saturday night during the Tigers game? I had family/friends people over to show off the new tv and the digital noise was killing me. didn't have any last night though - and game was better too!

2) There's been mention of making sure when you connect the XBOX360, that you set it to 'Direct Mode' on the XBR2. Yet, in the XBR2 user manual, there is absolutely NO mention of 'Direct Mode' or how to access it. But the specs of the XBR2 say 'Direct Mode' is available.

How in the world do you access this 'Direct Mode' and when is it supposed to be used??? Does Sony just expect you to find out about these various settings on your own and what and when they're supposed to be used?

Just a guess, but check your Setup Menu for "Game Mode." That's what they may be referring to. There are also several other references to Game Mode in the manual.

I'm not a gamer, but I believe Game Mode shuts down all the TV's signal processing and other functions that could introduce game lag or other game-related issues.

Not absolutely certain, but I seem to remember reading here or elsewhere that at least one XBR2 owner/gamer found it unnecessary to use it and he preferred the image in normal mode.

No noise on from the game.... only thing I saw was when I was watching Independence Day last evening on HBO-HD. Once in a while, it got a little fuzzy during scene's with lots of action. Man... I don't have even have surround sound hooked up yet, but was blown away by the picture.

Robinson,

In your close up shot of letters I didn't see noise so much as a little misconvergence. If the dark blue/grey outline on the left side of the letters is a legitimate part of the image to confer on it the 3D look, then I still see about a pixel or a half pixel worth of green misconvergence. I have the 70 myself and have a similar slight green misconvergence maybe a millimetre, although it is unnoticeable at any normal viewing distance.

Any you other guys see the same thing looking right up close at white lettering?
Hi guys/gals....did a quick connect of the 70" as I had to head right out of town. At the out of the box setting it looked gorgeous. I want to start playing with the settings (such a guy thing!), and will, but I wanted to let everyone know this tv is stunning. I bought mine online and the experience was excellent...only took a few days and the delivery guys even brought it in (was worth the tip). Thanks everyone for the convincing to go 70 over 60...can't wait for basketball season--GO UCONN!
Ok, my 70XBR2 arrives later this week....but the owner's manual online says it requires THREE people to pick up this tv in very specific places. The delivery company says they are sending only TWO people to take the tv out of its original box and place it on the stand.

Is this ok? I paid a lot of money for this tv and I am not sure if Sony's recommendation of three people is just to be "safe" or if I really need to be concerned that two people are not enough??

Just make sure you don't sign anything until it is setup if you paid for white glove.

Even then subject it to a minimum of: scrapes on box, possible hidden damage, subject to inspection etc.

Call the people you bought it from and ask for the exact wording they want on the POD. You do not want to limit anyonce liability or possibly clear anyone from a potential claim. The store will have a blurb they want you to write. The driver may say stuff oh just sign here I have to go, I have other deliveries etc, and someone will call you about the damage from the office etc. Note the tiny print below the line usualy say's "Received in good condition". BS. It is his job to get a clear POD from you. Make as many notes on it as you can.

Tweeters in Greensboro and W-S had the 70" on display for a few days. After that they took it off display and boxed it up again. They claimed it took up too much space and they didn't have a large enough TV stand to show it correctly. Doesn't make much sense!!

Yes. I contacted Tweeter in San Diego and they price matched and refunded me the difference.

No way....I am not touching the set. Because the delivery dudes can always say "he was the one who dropped it." Liability issue. If they feel they can sit it on my stand with only 2 people...fine. But I will be watching them closely, for sure.

I am just curious from 70XBR2 owners...how many people it took to pick up the darn thing.

first off, it's not my photo... it was in a post i was responding to.... i see what you are talking about but i'm not really bothered by that at my viewing distance... what i'm referring to is the "mosquito noise" around the letters.... in his close up of the word "TRAUMA" you can see ripples / waviness in the green background surrounding the white letters... here's a quote from sony style.com :
" The WEGA Engine HD adds the following:
DRC-MFv2.5 Sony's exclusive video signal processing that improves video signals to a realistic and clean picture quality according to signal types.
CCP-XA Generates high purity, high Signal-To-Noise ratio and enables the generation of wide bandwidth and stable digital component signals.
IFP2 Has functions that optimize contrast remove noise in the signal to reproduce video with little noise and blur. "....interesting....looking forward to some tweaks from some more experienced videophiles to utilize these improvements to reduce or eliminate this "noise" .....
don't see the"flea" as an acceptable option, being that this is supposed to be address according to the aforementioned description from Sony....any thoughts?

Glad to see you decided to go big and got the 70" for gaming (I read your 60"-70" thread on the gaming forum section. May ask where you got the set from. If so please PM me.

I had 3 people according to the manual and it went very smoothly. I suppose that 2 very strong people can also do it and it will be fine, but 3 would obviously be better. I assume that the reason sony specifies 3 people is to help balance a great deal of the weight that is located in the rear center of the TV, instead of leaving it up to the 2 people at opposite ends. If you're not planning on using sony's speakers, you may want to remove them ahead of time to save some weight before the move to the stand. Good luck!
