I have a Sony ES9000 dvd player. It only has component outputs. What resolution will the xrb2 display? What resolution will an upconverted dvd player with hdmi outputs display?

I have been wondering if I have a defective set or if my settings need to be adjusted. I notice that almost all channels on my 60" XBR2 have a snowy or smoky like quality. It appears as if there is some inherent static in the signal. I notice this on standard definition as well as HD channels. I also notice something similar on DVDs. All my video sources are connected via component inputs (Comcast's lousy HD cable box has no HDMI). I do notice slightly less on snow on HD channels, but even then there still is some fuzziness. Anyone have any ideas?

livngston,

What do you see with your DVD player??

If it has the same smoky like quality, then its like a setting in the display (brightness and contrast would be a good place to start)or maybe something's broken.

If DVD isn't smoky, then you might want to look at the cablebox/incoming signal.

Even the DVD player is smokey. That I wasn't sure if it was the result of just using a 480p old Panasonic DVD player with component output as opposed to an HDMI upconverting player. I am also only able to sit a max of 8 feet away given the room size. Is the fuzziness just resulting from the distance from the TV or is something out of wack?

I have my cable and antenna directly plugged into my r60xbr2. When the tuner displays a channel as being broadcast in 720p or 1080i is that what is being projected onto the screen? OR is it just an SD signal since it is not being input via component or hdmi?

the screen is always 1080p the set is telling what signal it is receiving

if the haze is consistent across all sources i would presume that the issue is with the set, either a setting or a defect. All of the different sources would display different artifacts as they are different problems that need to be solved by the set. Do you know what SSE is? could that be what you are seeing? Does your set look different to you from a set in a store ?

Is anyone using the ATI 2006 AGP video card? (same as the 9600)

I had the ATI hooked up to my Toshiba 50" CRT rear projection set and could never figure out the proper settings. I've got a 25' vga cable coming today and would appreciate any advice on how to set it up.

Thanks.

Is anyone using the Oppo 971? Any problems?

Also, the 981 is coming out soon. It will have an hdmi output. The 971 comes with a dvi to hdmi cable. It will also upconvert to 1080p, while the 971 is limited to 1080i. Otherwise, the video quailty is (according to oppo) pretty much the same.

Are those good enough reasons to exchange the 971 for the 981 when it comes out?

This is the combination I have, and it looks fantastic. I will be having my set calibrated in Feb. it looks like, and I bet it will be even better then. I currently have the OPPO 971 output at 1080i.
I am using a dvi - > HDMI cable from monprice instead of the one it comes with.

I finally arranged for my 60XBR2 to be delivered next Tuesday!
I could have had it delivered earlier but was involved in home renovations that generated a lot of fine dust, which I believe is not a friendly environment for a rear projection TV.

Can hardly wait

Larry,

Why a different cable? Was the oppo-supplied one bad or did you already have the monprice cable and figured it was higher quality?

I have all the Firefly episodes in HD stored on the hard disk and I'd prefer to save them if possible. Thanks.

I don't have this problem with my SA 8300 (SARA) PVR via hdmi to video 8. It does take a long pause when switching resolutions but I get a black screen and the video always comes up eventually. The pause is long enough to be annoying. One thing I read about, but haven't tried, is set the PVR to pass only one resolution (eg, 1080i) but I am not sure how that affects pq of non 1080i sources.

I strongly recommend perusing the 8300 threads.

I had a XBR1 and many of us are arranging to get replacements due to the defect of Green blobs and un uniform coloring on the screen.

Did they fix that on the XBR2? Of course many were fine for about 8 to 10 months so this question is only going to be for any of you who have found a problem right away.

I would like to add to this by asking the assistance of these gracious XBR2 owners to try this simple test.

Play a b/w dvd and look at the screen to see if it is truly b/w through each quadrant of the screen. A good one for this test is the movie Sin City. This will really help us XBR1 oweners who are the fence due to some uniformity issues but love our XBR1's otherwise.

Thanks in Advance!

I watched "Good Night and Good Luck", which is all B&W, and it looked great!

I have also displayed various full screen test patterns of uniform gray, white, black, primary and secondary colors, etc., color uniformity was great.

Cinemotion is always grayed out. Why can't I turn it on?

Thanks

Not P3 pictures, but I finally took a shot of my family room set up with the 70" and a couple of screen shots (post calibration by umr - more on that later!)

You must have the picture mode set to Custom to enable the Cinemotion control

1. Go to the menu, select Picture>Picture Mode>Custom (Page 49 of your manual)

2. Go to the menu, select Setup> (scroll down to) Cinemotion>Auto (Page 62 of your manual)

The manual has lots of detailed information, but some of it is scattered about - much like the menu system, it's good but not entirely well or intuitively organized.

That's a heckuva nice installation, EB. Now I see what concerned you earlier about ventilation and speaker removal.

How is that single CC speaker working out above the set? Does dialog sound 'centered' vertically?

Sweet cabinetry - did you craft that?

Wow! Great set up.

I really can't wait to get my set calibrated now. Those screen shots look excellent.

If you had UMR do your audio system too, be sure to tell us about that.

Thanks!

When the center speaker was flat, it did lift the dialog a bit. It's now tilted down with some rubber feet in the back.

Cabinetry was done by an outside shop, matches the kitchen cabinets. I'm all thumbs...

We had time, so Jeff did check audio. The story is all over in the tweaks/settings thread.

But I will add he has a really cool audio meter that not only does sound level, but full, live, frequency response histograms! Sort of puts my Radio Shack sound pressure meter to great shame... Jeff really does have cool toys!

That's some nice furniture. What's the height of the top of the screen? It looks about 72" or so. Any viewing angle issues with the TV that high?

Thanks!

It's a little less then that, about 66" to the top I'd guess. Was originally designed for a 65" Philips 9" CRT RTPV. I was measuring very carefully to see if the 70" would fit. I've probably got about 1/2" clearance on each side, although I was ready to remove the clear plastic pieces if necessary.

The 65" had a reasonable border between the edges of the screen and the frame of the front piece. With the Sony 70", the width of the frame is pretty much exactly the width of the screen, so I'm getting some reflection off the sides of the frame. I'll have to do something to cut down the reflectivity, either electricians tape (my wife is not amused) or sand it down a bit to break the glossy finish.

We're sitting about 11-12' back, so the height really hasn't really been a problem, even when I start slouching down later at night!
