Uhhhhh, 30fps is not a problem... every 60fps display accepts 30fps--- they show each frame 2 times to get 1/30th of a second 2/60=1/30.
And 1080i is not a problem either. While the XBR2 doesn't convert 480 to 1080 very well, it does do a decent job of converting 1080i to 1080p. And yes, even thought the XBR2 is 1080p60, that doesn't mean you can't send it other formats... you CAN and it works fine.
The real reason to return the first LG dual format player is because it is SO LAME playing HD-DVD. They play the MOVIE OK, but none of the interactive features or menus are supported - you can make selections but it is very tedious and annoying.
The neq Samsung dual format player appears to play HD-DVD properly (and Blu-ray) and has the HD-DVD logo (LG was not allowed to put the HD-DVD logo on their first player). The Gen 2 LG dual format player also seems to be OK. But both players cost more than a dedicated Blu-ray and HD-DVD player if you don't go nuts on prices.
