If he shared the identity of the killer the police could have caught him easily. Maybe I'm nitpicking but the writing just seems more "tv" than it used to. My biggest problem is the change in Deb. All the hand wringing and hesitation in reaching a decision on what to do about her brother seems out of character. Yes, I realize what a life changing moment the reveal in the church was, but still,,,she just seems weaker and more submissive than she ever has before. Her reaction seems more out of tv writing 101 than the cutting edge writing I'm used to on this series. I'm still in but I'm feeling an odd detachment from the show now. It just isn't as clever or surprising as it once was, and I miss that.
Most shows aren't clever or surprising as they once were when you get to season 7, or even season 4 for that matter. It's a difficult thing to maintain.
As for Dexter keeping the finger print to himself, he "needed" this kill, as it was the only thing that he knew wouldn't let him down at this point. He said something along the lines of needing it because it was the only constant thing in his life. That is why he didn't give the info to the cops, and it's not the first time he has kept evidence to himself in order to kill the bad guy himself. The real nitpick is why Debra didn't notice the AFIS scan running on his computer while she was chatting with him.
And as for Debra, remember she did let the vigilante killers go, so letting her brother go is not out of character at all. The writers have been grooming Debra for this since season 5. Jennifer Carpenter is incredible, and her acting continues to get better and better, but this role will test her. Me thinks she'll nail it, though.

No he didn't. Dexter let him off with a warning, so Jonah is still alive.

But I also agree with scowl that the earlier post-sloppy seasons were just cooler and more compelling. It's really time, ratings aside and IMO, for Dex & Deb to call it a day. Is this the last season?
No, it is the second-to-last season; there will be an eighth. You're right, though, Dexter's sloppiness is the whole point, as he has to get caught by someone eventually (besides Deb). It's doubtful he'll get off scott free in the end.
