Dexter on SHO - Page 3

1. Did I see a rerun of the first episode? It was the one where the sister is introduced and the bloodless killer is introduced.
2. Why is there a 30 min Dexter scheduled for tonite if it's a 1 hour series?
3. Will the second episode premier tomorrow night?

Great show, worth 3$/week if you throw in Weeds.

Not so much rooting for him (although I've seen plenty of ads, reviews, and Showtime PR blurbs that call him the 'hero' of the story), as wanting to see him last long enough to see his story unfold.

Whether we explicity 'root' for him or not, him getting away with murder is necessary for the show to continue. And as long as his 'victims' are guilty of heinous crimes, it makes it easier for us to continue watching. He can't get caught or killed, otherwise the show's over.

Dexter on Death Row would make a boring series I think. :-)

Thankfully, there's no pop-ups here in Canada on TMN (The Movie Network), and fantastic picture quality!!

Hmm...It seems we agree (I think) and are saying the same basic thing. Possibly you misunderstood my point.

Second ep was very good as well. I would like to see Julie Benz's character more though. Benz is a good actress. The sneaks for the rest of the season are funny and interesting. Looks like he gets put in the same situation he puts his victims. I'm guessing that's the season-ending cliffhanger, and I'm starting to suspect that the sister is the mystery killer.

I'm sure that could work in some conviluted way, but I don't think it flows.

Another fantastic episode. I'm loving the way that it continues to strike that balance between sympathy and empathy for the character without making the viewer lose sight of the thin line he walks and the consequences of his guiding force. The scenes with his girlfriend and the children are some of the best for revealing his character; and the voiceover track works more times than not and adds to the show rather than detracts from it, whcih is quite rare.

I gave this show a shot with everything I read about it... now is one of my favorites shows this season... Awesome I really like it .

Yes it's gory, but really no more so than the CSI shows that are on broadcast TV. I think it does glorify killings, but then to some extent so do all TV shows and movies. The show doesn't wallow in the violence (you don't see him cutting into the guy), but is more interested in the psychology of the character.

Dexter isn't a sociopath, btw. He has an understanding of himself and knows there's something wrong with him, that he's just faking his way through human interaction. The flashbacks show him wrestling with his urges, showing he does have a conscience. A sociopath wouldn't see there's anything wrong with him; he just thinks other people are stupid chumps and deserve whatever punishment he deals out.

And of course it's a TV show. In real life, I would want Dexter in jail, I don't care if he kills only the guilty (who is he to decide?) But that's the thing with TV and movies -- they let you study and enjoy characters you wouldn't go near in real life. Think Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Sopranos.

anybody else think his father is the killer? They never mention what happend to his father, he may still be out there killing prostitutes.

I don't think Dexter has a very good understanding of himself at all. He is constantly confused at some of his own actions, such as his coming on to his gf while talking about cutting people up. He still has no memory of his traumatic childhood, so no idea of where his dark urges come from.

* Disregard for society's laws
* Violation of the physical or emotional rights of others
* Lack of stability in job and home life (Dexter picked the one job that would allow him to pursue his hobby 24/7. I think his dad's influence on him also helped him avoid this particular symptom)
* Lack of guilt
* Superficial wit and charm
* Recklessness, impulsivity (dad taught him patience and invesitgative method)


Sounds like our boy to me :-) Dexter knows the difference between right and wrong, he just doesn't care. He enjoys killing, and following daddy's rules allows him to keep killing while staying under society's radar as much as possible.

Great show. Anyone know the song in spanish fairly near the end or where to find a list of songs on the series?

As for the thought that the mystery killer might be his father, I'm pretty sure that he has said that their parents are dead.

Don't know ... but it would have been nice to have English subtitles during the Spanish dialog ... perhaps it was lurking in the CC, I didn't think to check.

I was thinking the same thing, I guess we're to assume whatever they said was totally innocuous and unrelated to the main plot, of course, then why even put it in there?

My Spanish is extremely limited, but I thought she asked him how is daughter was. Didn't get the rest. Regardless, since there were no sub-titles, my take is that it wasn't anything significant. Perhaps it was meant to suggest a certain comraderie, since they were speaking in their native language.

Or maybe not.

I'd like to believe that ... but what's the point of excluding the (albeit dwindling) monolingual English majority of the audience. If it was not important to the plot, don't waste my time. Otherwise, the writers/producers must be trying to make some kind of point by including that scene.

Or...since this scene transpired immediately after the sister was promoted to Homicide (which the Lieutenant didn't approve of), it was meant to paint the sister as an "outsider," which might become significant later on.

Or, again, maybe not.

The exchange was just about family matters and, I think, a reminder that the detective shouldn't forget his obligations.

The exchange was not crucial to the plot, but perhaps was meant as a comment on the ability of bilinguals to communicate without always including monolinguals, both within the context of the story and vis-a-vis (another language, for you trilinguals -- and no, that is not some porno position) the audience.

The funnier untranslated Spanish occurs on "Earl," where the motel maid has thanked viewers and invited them to return in the new season while it appears she is insulting or dissing another character within the story.

Enjoyed last night's episode....but boy do I wonder about his Foster Father...this cop can't call one of his cop buddies and have them look into the psycho nurse? He has to unleash Dexter?

Granted she had it coming, but still.

Of course, they also subjected us to Denise Crosby's naked body to add to the horror. :-) Man, gravity and time have not been kind.

Unleashing Dexter was the primary purpose. The urges were going to be acted upon, this just presented an opportunity to channel them towards an "appropriate" victim. It allowed the foster father to get Dexter on the right, wrong path (as opposed to the wrong, wrong path) while he was still alive.

Agree about Denise Crosby - time was very, very hard on her. Much different than her last naked scene on Showtime (assuming Red Shoe Diaries was SHO, not HBO)
