DON'T DO THAT, you made my heart skip a beat thinking it was happening for real.

'LOTR' has been mentioned as a possibility for release in HD-DVD because (a) it's from New Line (a Time Warner studio, and Warner has been very good with HD), (b) Peter Jackson likes HD (and has close ties to Microsoft, who is tight with HD-DVD and are releasing an add-on pak for the Xbox 360 that will play HD-DVD movies) and (c) they're fan-favorite movies that have both cool visuals and great story (which seem to be mutually exclusive with most demo material on HD/BR movies). Bottom line: expect something firm announced in early '07, not sooner.

No doubt, a simple question mark added to the title would have saved us a lot of shock. ;)

What a load of BS. I just had a stroke and shat myself at the same time. Change the title to save others from the same pain and embarrassment.

While LOTR isn't available for PREORDER at Amazon, they do list it on their site. But they have for a long time and it only means that it will LIKELY be released at some point in time.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...352806-9337562

There really is no news on this and won't likely be any until much further into the future, so I'd agree that the thread should be closed. No good can come of it! LOL.

Thanks Ken, that title change will save a lot of people from a premature switch to clean underwear that some people here experienced reading the original title thread! :D

New Line has said don't expect LOTR on HD-DVD until close 'til 2008. I hope they change their mind(s) and decide to release this sooner, much sooner.

Keep in mind that New Line just released re-packaged DVDs of the trilogy on DVD, and I'd assume they hope to get the most sales they can out of it through this Holiday season.

That being the case, I would think that they don't want people thinking an HD DVD release is "right around the corner". There was a statement on Amazon.com's listing of the new DVDs (and lotr.net) that said not to expect this on HD DVD until 2008 at the earliest, but I think you have to logically take that with a large grain of salt considering what I said above.

My guess is that it is possible to see it in 2007, but I'd suspect it would be a Fall or Holiday release. Spring seems much less likely. If not in 2007, then I expect it for certain in 2008, but that just seems WAY too long for them to wait.

Either way, I don't think there will be any reliable information on when this might come until after this Holiday season (when New Line knows that sales of their new DVD releases are well past their peak).

I totally agree with you on this. Notice how the "not until 2008 at the earliest" statement came right at the time when the new DVDs were released. Obviously they want to wait for some more players to be bought, and they'll want to release it around the holidays.

They also may want to wait for advances in technology (VC-1 improvements, BD-50 in large enough quantities, possible 45GB HD-DVDs, testing and development of new interactive features).

ok, looks like i am responsible for about 10 heart attcks / strokes. everyone take an aspirin and head for the emergency room. Incidentally, i did put a question mark on it. i asked the question because i saw it on amazon pre-order, and i wondered if I had missed something. Again my apologies. :D

LOTR was initially listed on the official HD DVD website, "The Look and Sound of Perfect." New Line has decided to wait until 2007 to release its initial titles on HD DVD. If Q4 shapes up well for the sale of HD DVD hardware, I wouldn't be shocked at all to see at least the theatrical versions on my new favorite format early next year. By the way, Target is officially on board with both hardware and software making their way to stores across the country all this week. According to a sales associate, HD DVD will have TWICE the display area of that other format. It may be purely a function of title availability or maybe they are cautious since their commitment to UMD turned out to be a disaster. I plan to support Target and Fry's Electronics with my purchases because I feel Best Buy continues to treat HD DVD like a bastard step child.

Dare I say it, maybe there should be a sticky thread called "The 'No, we DON'T know when the LotR/Star Wars/etc. films will be out on HD DVD' list."
