Denon Blu-Ray Player - is this for real?

At the http://www.blu-ray.org/ website there is a picture of a $7000 Denon BRD-1
Blu-Ray Disc Player.

Is this for real or is it a paintshop fake?

that picture is fake. I know a doctored picture when I see one.

That could be a fake, but it also has some very interesting logos on the front side-- DTHD, DTS-HD, THX-- and it has the BD logo in two places. It could be real. But $7000???
Considering the prices of some of their DVD players $7000 doesn't entirely surprise me. Asuming this turns out to be valid, of course...
Yeah the $7000 price tag kinda stopped me. You could buy one of each of the announced BD players and probably get a PS3 60GB off the 'bay for less than that. Heck, you could get one of each of the BD players AND the HDDVD Recorder Standalone imported from Japan for close to that price (or one of the announced BD Recorder standalones)

Denon is a BD company, right ???
I think Denon is part of both formats in partnership with Marantz. I forget the name of the joint company, something like DM Holdings.

D&M Holdings (who owns the Denon and Marantz brands) is a member of the HD DVD promotion group and the Blu-ray Disc Association.

Looks like a HTPC case.

This is totally fake

Okie dokie... My folks own a DVD-5910CI, which is available (or was available...) in silver.

This purported player is a mock of the silver version of Denon's DVD-5910. Second problem is the price. While Denon has sold some high end, expensive stuff, they have never priced a player anywhere near $7000.

Further, Denon is one of the many companies who has pledged neutrality. They have not formally or informally announced any player for either format, which is giveaway number three...

I find it quite convenient and very odd that "blu-ray.org" is the only place on the planet that has any knowledge of this device.

I'll believe it when I see it from CES next January, and / or when Denon makes their own press release.

Philips Electronics is one of the main shareholders of D&M (Denon & Marantz).

Denon is Hitachi. So following the trail will lead to the realformat.
The only way this could be a real picture is if it is a prototype. For starters, the DTS-HD logo is wrong.

Not anymore.

Incorrect.

Denon is D&M which was formed when Denon sold off to a (I believe Chinese) company and then bought Marantz from Philips. They aslo bought what was left of Sonic Blue (replay TV).

At $7000, does it really matter whether it's fake or real??
Maybe it's a Sunshine BD player with Sony guts!
Yep - that's a fake picture.

It's not even well done - there are tons of square edges where they "cut and pasted" the front panel to make the unit bigger...

So the consensus is that its definitely a fake!

I thought so...but i just had to ask the question.

Although every player Blu-Ray Player announced so far except for the Samsung seems fake....after so many delays and false starts i wonder when i am going to see the mythical Pioneer, Sony and Panasonic Blu-Ray players....I hate this waiting game!!

I agree with you this is too expensive to be true. I would put the pricing of a first Denon BD player at around 2000$

What are the clues you see?
Samsung : $1000
Denon : $7000
Krell : $49,999

Sony BD movies : priceless

Not so much clues....but....

The face looks 'very' similar to the Denon 5910ci SD DVD player.
Buttons in identical locations, for the most part. The blu-ray, dts-hd,
etc. logos can easily be photoshopped.

I doubt Denon would manufacture a BD or HD-DVD player
with the same 'look' as their SD player line, IMO.

I don't believe Denon has confirmed any support for either
hi def format at this time.

There is NO way any initial offering will be 7 grand, IMO.

Your last point tops my list, but I'm not so sure that they wouldn't base it on already designed metal. The image is not of sufficient resolution for me to spot "flaws," but perhaps that's by design.

And. . why would they lie?

I have very good (indirect) sources within Denon. The word is that this is totally bogus, they supposedly have no idea how such a picture got on the web, and they're going to demand it gets pulled. Denon hasn't committed to BR or HD yet, and an announcement like this (even if has some basis in fact) could mess up their relationships with the opposing camp and delay them from getting the tech specs for it should they be interested in supporting the other camp.

Does Denon still use Panny internals for its SD-DVD players? I thought at one point Denon DVD Players were just rebadged Panny's with some extras thrown in. (and about triple the price)
