I'm considering switching from our Charter expanded/basic service to satellite because they now encrypt most of the expanded channels, but wasn't sure if it would work because of the receivers.

HDHomeRun is not for DirecTv, it is for receiving OTA ATSC and cable QAM (unencrypted) streams.
There are people experimenting with capturing component video and HDMI streams (your DirecTv STB must not require HDCP with HDMI) - I'm not sure of the status of those projects.

Now, I have 4 computers in my house that can potentially consume the HD feeds. All are running MCE 2005.
