Its a looooooooong shot but I am using Monster THX wire and does a certain side of wire need to be a certain polarity. I aslo sent Yamaha a help request , I will wait to see what they think. And yes i think the receiver is an excellent piece of equipment. I really like the sound out if it. I can't wait to get a sub on it. I just need to decide what I need . I would like to spend no more than $500 though. Ahhhhhhhhh Yamaha just replied to me I 'll go check now.

Go with an SVS sub. http://www.svsound.com/

Here it is, So you guys are right in saying that the YPAO isn't 100% effective. Oh well at least I know I am not a dolt wiring up my speakers. They also said that a sub on the sytem would not change the setup warnings either.

I hear SVS is a damn good sub too. I think I'll take a look at them. I would like a 12 " if possible. I also don't know about getting them in Canada. I was also thinking of Velodyne. Any thoughts?

This is problem that happens when standing acoustic waves are present in the room. The YPAO microphone is then confused by these standing waves and therefore emits the error. If you're positive about the polarity then simply ignore the warning.

I bought the 5.1 package from Sonicboomaudio about a month ago and man the sub rocks the house. Get a performance sub you won't regret it!

There are alternatives, however I don't think you'll find better performance for this price. You could go with something cheaper but you'd really start hampering performance especially in a room like that. I guess it depends how well you want your HT setup to perform. The 10" would suit you fine, I have a 12x20x8 room and it crushes everything inside of it. It's awesome dude, I'm watching almost all my DVD's over again and Xbox 360 is out of this world. Go for it, you won't regret it. If you go with something cheaper your always gonna wonder just how much better a sub from SVS would be.

You could also check out the HSU subs from electronicsforless.ca as stated above. They are very good subs as well.

Haha, awesome stuff hey?
Sometimes I playback music just to feel the power and accuracy of the sub. Watching action movies is like !! !! I just watched Saving Private Ryan last night and you can feel every rifle, machine gun and mortar round. Damn... all this talk has got me excited again. Might have to pop in Black Hawk Down, Days of Thunder or Top Gun tonight!

I knew he was from Canada, thats why I pointed him "that way" in my earlier posts.

Great deals on HSU from EFL(aka Sonicboom), they are gitting rid of all their HSU stock.

Choose what suits your budget.

Check out my sig for some good movies to test your new subs with.

Help!

Could someone here please check and see if speakers set to small see the full signal or only the high pass signal from the HTR-5960 crossover scheme? Specifically if you have a sub and are setting your fronts to small. My fronts always get the full singal and the sub gets the low pass from the crossover. I'm not sure if my unit has a problem or if this is how the crossover is implemented. Thank you!!

Here is the response from Yamaha's support in regards to my question about the crossover. Whoever answered clearly misunderstood my question, or didn't read it carefully. Is my wording confusing?

Cheers, Mike

================
Michael,
If you have it in 2 Channel Stereo (Not in Pure Direct Mode.) and the sub output is set to both (Front speakers set to large.) you will have signals going to the sub woofer.

Receivers [AV and Stereo]
Model: HTR-5960
I have a question regarding the implementation of the crossover in the HTR-5960 in the 2CH Stereo mode. It seems that the front speakers always get the full signal (instead of just the high pass), independent of the crossover setting. Is this correct? Does the crossover only split off the low pass and send it to the sub and leave the front signal unchanged?

Here are my settings:

Mode: 2 Channel Stereo
Front: Small
Crossover: 60 or 80
LFE out: Sub

As expected, there is no sub output if I set front to large or listen in Pure Direct mode. I've made measurements on all crossover settings (40-200 Hz) and have seen the same behavior. The crossover setting only affects the sub output and has no effect on the mains signal.

My mains reach down to 35 Hz, but their bass output can get muddy at higher volumes. I would like my sub to completely take over at 60 or 80 Hz and not have any "doubling up" of bass with the mains.

Any advice? Thank you very much.

You got me worried a bit here. I'll be home next Friday to check the high pass.
Yamaha answered correctly as per the manual. You might try tech support again and be more specific about using the sound meter and not having LFE set to both or mains.

Anyone else?

I've pretty nearly decided that I'm going to get one of these receivers. I understand that the 659 and 5960 are pretty much the same, but I want to make sure I fully understand the implications of one vs. the other, so let me ask the question this way... If the price of the 659 and 5960 were absolutely identical, which one would you get and why?
Hi
I have my own purchasing quandry, but on a different model...My original need was for simply an xm component tuner (such as the polk rxt12). But for $200 more you can get the V659+xm ant & tuner. There is also an excellent deal on the 5990 (only $100 more than V659) at Vanns.
My thought is that this would simply be a receiver to hold me over until HDMI 1.3 is properly implemented. I would then use the 659 or 5990 receiver for sending audio to other zones.
My main concern is heat..I have read several 'fry an egg' comments about the 5990. How is the v659 by comparison?(I am not a big breakfast guy).

[BTW, I do have an excellent 5 yr old Integra 7.1 HT receiver on another system elsewhere in the house, runs cool. I could press this into service and just get the Polk xrt12]

Thanks in advance for any replies on the v659 vs 5990.

Mike

The 659, only because of the assignable amps. IMHO Yamaha is making a mistake stocking many variations of almost the same receiver, negatives also time spent answering e-mails on whether both have burr -brown chips and such. The manual on both need re-writes to clarify some of the standard features and that BTW only amp-outs are muted with headphone use, not the pre-outs like my old Carver C-17.

The 5960 was $339 delivered so I'll live with it

I heard the RX659/HTR5960 are actually very good with heat. You could check out at Cnet, thats where I might have read it.
This is taken from Cnet. Doesn't really go into any scientific explanation but it does say its amps compared to others are cool.

Design of Yamaha RX-V659

The Yamaha RX-V659 is a handsome receiver in a high-tech sort of way. Its nicely organized front panel presents the user with a complete array of controls, and the large, distinctive orange LED display is easier on the eyes at night than more typical blue readouts. The full-size unit measures 17.1 by 6.75 by 16.6 inches, and it weighs 27.1 pounds. Unlike some receivers that seem to double as space heaters, the RX-V659's cool-running amplifiers won't singe your entertainment center.

I hope i am not hijacking someones thread here if i am ,i am sorry but could not find where to start a new thread.I have a yamaha htr 5960 and cannot get the automatic tuning section to work after i put inthe am and fm station in thr reciever manually. I put the button on source as per manual hit tuner but it does do nothing.I pretty near have the book wore out and racking my brains to figure this out. Also do you have to put in codes for the a/v reciever in order for remote to work when taken out of the box as this one would not work till i put in the codes from from page 101 and 102.Would some please run me through this setup.I allready called FS telling i was bring this remote in for them to figure out as i can get everything else so far. Thanks very much Tom

If you want to buy local, Fry's has the 5960 for $299 or pick one up at Best Buy and they will price match. Now I'm not sure if I should return my Pioneer 1016 and get one.
Let me just get this right: The RX-V659 & HTR-5960 both are rated 115W at 1-kHz, and 100W at 20Hz-20kHz, correct? Im just asking because I only see the 5960 @ 115W, and the V659 at 100W.

Thanks.

WOW I thought when I got mine for $320, that was the best price
post #390 of 784
I just bought one and I'm going to be running a 5.1 speaker configuration. Should I hook the rear speakers up to the Surround L & R ports or should I hook them up to the Surround Rear L & R ports?
