Thanks Dr, I was looking at the pre out section. I didn't buy the receiver yet but will and pair it with the OPPO 970. It's hard to figure some things out by looking at pictures and not having the piece in front of you.

I don't own the receiver either, reading manuals is very helpful.

The OPPO 970 is an upscaling DVD player. Why would you use the analog inputs? Your digital optical or coax audio inputs should be fine. Did I miss something?

True HD players are going to be a PITA due to having to use the Analogs (on non HDMI receivers) and "on board" bass management on the HD DVD players. Hopefully this will change with newer generation HD DVD players.
Only for SACD - DVD Audio, it dosen't pass through optical or coax, only witn 5.1 analog or HDMI. That's my understanding.
Ah, OK. I would down load the OPPO manual to verify. Anyway you have the analog Sub connector. Note that you must use the OPPO bass management on the Analogs as per Yamaha. I would download both manuals before leaping
post #606 of 784
Also if you hooked up an HD player like the Toshiba HD-XA1 or 2 you wouldn't get the high resolution audio without the multi channel outputs. I think they have them on the players because most people have receivers without HDMI. For 659 owners be careful what player you buy, like the HD-A2 doesn't have it. I don't know about any Blue-Ray players.
I still like the OPPO because of the SACD. Already bought a couple discs on Ebay, am anxious to hear how they sound.

Let us know your opinion on the 5.1 remixes. AFAIK most recordings were created with a stereo sound stage in mind. I'm curious what the back channels will add other than "hall" effects. The higher bit rate should be awesome in plain old 2 channel mode.

LOL, this is just what happened to me a few long threads ago. My DVD bit steam had gotten set on a compatibility mode that wrecked the Dolby decoding on the Yamaha but DTS fine. Took me days to find that one. I was using a Sony player.

Cheers

I had mine and thought that my old Onkyo HTIB receiver played louder with less stress on the receiver. 1 person mentioned that it may be because its a cleaner sound and not as harsh- could be very true!!! I still was worried about clipping as at a mere 80bd in average sound i was at like 80% of the Yamaha's range. I bought an Emotiva LPA-1 125wx5, 50wx2 amp and use the preouts on the yamaha. I could not be happier. IMO the Yamaha is worth the $$$ i just wanted to have a little wow factor /headroom and I surley have that now!

There is alot more info/posts about this back a few pages if your willing to read! GL

how come every one says ypao is not accurate. in my system it god everything spot on. r u guys sure ur not just nitpicking.

I need some help from those "in the know" on this receiver. I'm setting up a system for my dad's Theater/Game Room. He needs a receiver that would work with the following components:

DVR - Satellite Digital Video Recorder Box
DVD - a plain old DVD player - won't be HD-DVD
VCR - yes he still wants to use a vcr for a few things
CD Changer - he has a Pioneer CD changer
Game1 - Xbox - old school, but hacked by me
Game2 - Wii - this is important as it is used a LOT by him and their friends
Ipod - occassional Ipod usage
Front Projector - we're purchasing a projector and screen for the output. It will not be HDMI of course.

So can this receiver (rx-v659) handle this many inputs well? Is this the best receiver for him or should I be looking at something else?

Any input and suggestions are very welcome. Thanks!
It will work fine. You may have to use the video aux. on the front, but should be fine. You need an Ipod dock which costs $60 I believe.

Thanks richeddy,
I'm going to keep this receiver at the top of my list and see what else is out there with more inputs available. I'd prefer to not have to use the front inputs if possible.

Thanks for the response!

Glad I could help.

Well It's a little late but I just got my RX-V659 and am trying to set it up.
I ran the Auto-Setup and all the speakers work right except the sub-woofer.
I have the crossover frequency set at 90 hz and it's plugged into the correct jack on back of receiver but all I get is a hummmm when I turn the volume up on the speaker. It worked perfectly on my old receiver. Anybody know what's wrong?
Thanks.
Can you goto in the manual setup menu and see if the Sub is indeed on.........
Thanks Jay, actually I found the problem, the connection on the splitter going into the sub was loose.

I've had the 659 for a couple months and really like it. However, has anyone set up the additional "presence" speakers or whatever they are called? I have a small pair of BA satellites I thought I might throw on there if it was gonna be worth my time.

Looking for some help here, I now would like to send music files from my CPU to the 5960 for listening enjoyment... Does anyone have any expierience with this? I now I will need a sound card capable of doing it. I Just don't know what I need though. I would like to run it digital through an SPDIF connection as well. I figure this way would be the simplest as it would be one cable with a run of 30 - 40 feet. Anyone ............ ?

It depends on what you want to do. You can either have two extra speakers in the front "presence" or two in the back "surround back". You can only take your pick since it's 7.1 and not 9.1
Am still getting mine set up...Clutch.

Thanks for the reply. Post back when you set it all up!

I'm thinking of getting these "Dual outdoor speakers LU43PB" from Circuit City.
Very cheap (Bout $20.00 pair) but look and feel great and get decent reviews
Two for presence, two for surround back, and two for B speakers to put out in the backyard.
Will need about 75' speaker wire each for backyard placement.
All my other speakers are JBL's.
I don't think the back surrounds , presence and outdoor speakers have to be top notch.
Will be nice to have some sounds in the back yard to relax and BBQ.
Maybe get it set up for 4th July
Will post back; Clutch

My current speakers are 6 Ohms.
I don't believe there's a way to set up only the front speakers at 8 and the back at 6...so can this even be done?
I currently have the setting at 6 because they're all 6 ohms but once i start upgrading to bigger speakers but 8 Ohm, I want to make sure i dont mess anything up by either changing the general setting to 8 Ohms while still using the surrounds that are 6, or on the other hand by leaving it at 6 ohm when the mains/center are 8 Ohms.
Thanx!

set it at 8 ohms and leave it. u lose power in 6 ohm mode no matter what speakers u have.

Quick question here, I've got an HTR-5950 and am using component cables for the DTV and DVD as well as to the TV, so I have all of the video switching going through the yamaha. I used to have it all wired with composite and had the volume displayed on the TV. Now with the component cables it doesn't display when you adjust it on the TV. Is there any way to change this?

Hey Guys, I found this thread after fallin for the RX-V661. I read on that the V659 is the same receiver, same quality, same features, etc- cept for the HDMI. For me, this is not that big of an issue, especially at almost $100 less.
I will be using the unit right now mostly (70%) for my iPod, 1080p 32" HDTV via component (20%), and PS2 via components (10%). I will eventually (2-3 mo's) be getting a PS3 to replace the PS2. I will most likely still be using the components. From what I have read, I do not really need HDMI however, especially, if like I mentioned above, I can save almost $100.
What do you guys think? The RX-V659 sufficient, or should I go for the HDMI enabled 661 do to my components?
Thanks guys
Brian

You know, a lot of people keep saying the the V661 is the same as the V659 but in my opinion it is NOT. I think a more accurate assumption is to say that V881 is the same as the V659, plus HDMI. If you compare the dimension, weight and wattage of all three receivers you will see that the V881 is very close to the V659. Having said that, the two main difference between the V659 and the V661 (not counting VIDEO switching/pass through, which you say is not important to you), is:

(1) SCENES FEATURE: The V661 allow you to set predefined settings that you can access with one quick touch of a button. My brother uses that feature to quickly switch between 2.0, 2.1 (xover 120) and 5.1 (xover 80) speaker setups for music listening (turntable, CD and SACD). NO need to use the OSD to change settings. If you have a decent UNIVERSAL remote (like harmony 880), then this feature is NOT that big of a deal.

(2) ABILITY TO GET "BEST" SOUND FROM HD PLAYERS: The V661 as the ability to get higher quality sound via HDMI. With a HD-DVD player like the HD-A2, for example, you do not have any 5.1 analog outs. So you would need to use the optical out with the V659 which limits you to down converted DTS, instead of TrueHD or DD+ audio, when watching HD-DVD. With the V661, you could let the HD-A2 do the audio decoding, then send that signal to the V661 via HDMI.

Does anyone know at what level the 5960 clip?

That depends a lot upon what speakers you have, and also on what you are playing at the time.

IF I remember correctly in 2 channel mode, both channels driven: 120W @ 8ohms, 170w @ 4 ohms. If you mean at what level on the volume level it clips then it depends on your source material, speakers, etc. so hard to say. I feel that above say -13 on the volume dial would be pushin the amp to begin to distort. But i have always wondered this myself, so anyone with input here would be nice. Is there a point on the vol dial that should be considered max volume?

I think your 2nd feature is only helpful if your hd/blueray does not have 5.1 channel outputs. Otherwise, sound quality is the same.
