On the back of my DVR (HD) cable box I see, aside from the HDMI, 2 1394 plugs and an SATA plug.
What are these for?

1394 = "IEEE 1394" = "Firewire" = "I-link"
This connection is often used for camcorders, though some hard-drives can connect via a firewire port (this is not to say that your DVR would support a hard-drive through these connections though).

SATA = Serial ATA Hard Disk Drive
You can add an external Serial ATA HDD to your DVR.
