"No, he can stay." Click with the handcuffs.

that was absolute gold!

Best episode of the season. The scenes with Jon Hamm and Tracy were hilarious.

Did anyone else notice the shimmer of Tracy's green jacket? (closeups around the 22min mark) Wondering if it was a compression artifact - I know there's a shade of red that doesn't film properly, and I've seen an effect like that with tight stripes, but never seen that with other colors. Thought maybe those color problems were gone with the HD age.

Anyway, this ep was great!
I assumed it was the material, not the color
post #1117 of 1183
If you look at it closely it looks like a distortion, like "snow" when a channel was off-air (but green), not the shimmer of a shiny material.

-eta could be a pattern on that material as well

-I found a Television Production Handbook that talks about distortion with saturated reds, must have been just the wrong lighting on that shirt for that type of camera, called it a moire' effect.

The first live episode a couple years ago was a neat gimmick, but I didn't enjoy it all that much. They clearly learned a lot from that episode, because tonight's was amazing. One of the best half hours of TV I've seen in quite some time. Alec was awesome, and I loved Donald Glover as young Tracy. Hazel was great as well.

Seeing Cerie reminded me that she was in New Girl as a psycho girlfriend of Nick's who wanted her scarf back. Good to see her getting work outside of this show.

It actually looked like they may have had a chroma key sort of going, or something!

Yup, very entertaining. It seemed like they eased up on the cinéma vérité camera bounce (thankfully) and did more with blocking rather than camera switches. It also looked like the cast was looser and having more fun with it.
Nice work.

[EDIT: BTW - Does anyone know what (if any) differences were between the East Coast & West Coast versions?]

"Cerie" was also in "Sexdrive" - a movie I wasn't expecting much of but it really cracked me up.

Kim Kardashian instead of Paul McCartney (does 30 Rock hate the west coast?)
Brian Williams instead of Hamm on the news skit
Dr. Spaceman is Gay Dr. instead of Nazi Dr.
Jimmy Fallon didn't break, and Fred didn't hover into Jimmy's shot
Jack and Pete didn't kiss

There's a few more that I'm forgetting, but I think those were the biggies.

There are a few web pages highlighting the East v West differences, such as:

and (with video):

RE: Kardashian - Obviously better to be UTC/GMT -5
RE: Fallon - Put that tape in the National Archives because that's a rare event.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil
shouldn't be passed up either

Well, there is always the Internet at your disposal where you can see both versions.

But the "I think I broke your toilet" joke from Kim K was funny - and certainly a dig @ Ms Kardashian's most notable physical asset. And of course her Twitter joke.

+1 for sure.

All I can say, is that the live audience completely *RUINED* the show!!!!

How dare they try to shamelessly manipulate the home viewers into laughing at such unfunny material. What's next? Laugh tracks???

Hrrrrrrrumph!!! I say ...

And last night is the only acceptable form of laugh track. Real, unedited, honest-to-goodness laughter. Not like the crapfest used on shows like Whitney, Big Bang Theory and the 400 other CBS comedies that use it.

wow great show. did they do 2 different live shows? one for east and another for west?

that's a lot of superlative work for a half hour sitcom.

wow, that is remarkable.

2 live shows with different cast members

very well done!

I tell ya, I feel great. I slept like a baby last night...I woke up crying with a boob in my mouth.

Having now watched both, I'd say the West Coast had the better version. Technically it was more sound, with cleaner camera cuts, and the two big speaking gaffes (Tina and Tracy) were clean on the West version. Kim Kardashian being there actually made the end funnier than what Paul did. I also enjoyed Brian Williams more in the news role than Jon. Most of what Dr Spaceman said was different between the two eps, which was pretty cool. I'd love for them to do another live ep next season. As others said, it was one of the funniest episodes they've ever done.

When Alec Baldwin was saying his lines I thought I was watching Saturday Night Live. He just couldn't stop looking at the cue cards for his lines. Terrible!!

He had the most lines of anyone on the episode. And he wasn't the only one reading. And quite frankly, it didnt bother me one bit because the episode was hilarious.

Yes clearly *nothing* can be funny unless:

A) Nobody is around to laugh at it. Live or not.
B) People are around but *not* allowed to laugh.
or
C) There's a honest to god live audience present that's been primed by some 'sweaty warm up comedian(s)' and will laugh at just about anything by the time the show starts.

Frankly, I don't seen the distinction here ... much less the distinction between using "taped live audience reaction" or posting after(or during) the fact on AVS about how funny the show was ...

Berating "the masses" for not accepting "Arrested Development" or "Community" is every bit as "shameful and manipulative" as the "horrid crime" of using "live audience reaction."

Relax ... have a beverage ... enjoy every sandwich ... enjoy life, it goes by too quickly to waste time taking on "laugh tracks" as a religious crusade.

The only person with a bug up his arse about laugh tracks is you. And a live studio audience isn't a laugh track. The rest of us only talk about them when you bring them up. I think they're idiotic and unnecessary, and they affect the flow of a show. I loved 30 Rock's Live ep, but I hated how they had built in pauses to wait for audience laughter to stop. It's lame. Why does my OPINION bother you so much?

I was at the West Coast version, awesome to see how it all went down. Set changes, camera crew, the cast and warmup, all superb. Tina waved to us shortly before going live, amazing experience.

Was it a different audience for both versions?
