What sort of HTPC are you running and how do you utilize it? (I know very little about HTPCs)
The power supply to both externalized HDD/burner units is external correct?
Do some burning and editing on the Polaroid and let me know if you get and lock ups or stutter/freezing on playback with the external burner.
The hdd and the burner for both my Polo's are set up exactly the same. I'm using the Mapower case (blue lights) for the Genica hdd racks (thx to nextoo for the Geeks source) if you look closely at the pic of the connections the rear of the hdd enclosure is slightly open. The length of the rack is too long to fit the rear of the case into the slots at the rear but there is enough room for the top to grab the tension flanges of the rear and keep it held in place so I just use the switch on the enclosure to power it. The burner case just has the ide squeaking out the back and I flip the switch to power that as well. I don't use the usb adapter psu's.
@burnerbum I just route the ide over the back edge of the Polo and plop the top back on gently. Route the cables away from the screw locations on the top back edge and put the screws back in. Works fine if you are gentle the ide's take the shape/bend fine and as long as you aren't pulling and moving them around should hold up hunky dory. Top needs no modification to use it like that.
Back to the HTPC q: I build my own systems that one is getting long in the tooth. It's a water cooled Atlon XP running about a 35% overclock but being three years old long past it's day. It has a Hauppage 350 pvr card in it and a Nvidia fanless 6200 doing the video imaging duties. Two drives and a NEC dvd burner. The pvr is mpeg2, a good card but their software is weak especially their driver maintenace. It doesn't depend on the cpu for processing because the card will encode and decode (in hardware) unlike some others which typically hit the processor hard on playback. That's what kept me from needing to upgrade it. I've got ethernet running all over the house and usually have 4-6 pc's up running I can stream movies/replay recordings off various hdd's and my two replays are able to talk with each other and any pc I have DvArchive on. I can schedule shows to record, delete them, transfer to any pc running Dvarchive, stream them from one to another etc. I love hardware hehe. That's why I like the Polo all the tweaking.
I recorded one movie last night directly onto -R (Polo) and went in hid some chapters and no issues except
playing it back in the KX50. It didn't pick the start properly. It did show the title pic fine just didn't start where the Polo set it up. Haven't tried it yet in any of my dvd players but will. I'll try again tonight on something with some more editing. So far no issues with the either the Sony or the NEC externals.
