I realize receivers and TVs typically come out every year or two and subs come out far less frequently. I'd hate to be at the tail end of production for this model if they are coming out with something new with updated room calibration equipment on board or new subs in general. If you have any info for this JL newbie, I would appreciate it as to be honest I never even heard of JL until a couple of weeks ago but they get good reviews from what I've read.
As far as I know, there are no revisions to the Fathom line but I'm not sure why the concern. Subwoofer technology hasn't changed much over the last few years and nothing in the JL has been superseded by newer tech. In the other threads you mention the limited eq and yes, ARO does address only a single issue. Most users of the JL and other subs are utilizing the EQ built into their receiver to handle the sub and it works out very well. In my case, I run ARO first to address the largest peak and let Audyssey XT32 run to flatten the rest of the curve. It works extremely well, far better than any other solution I've tried to date.
I'm sure there are other EQ systems that would work as well. My recommendation would be to get the sub for it's capabilities and invest in either AVR or outboard eq for tuning as it will give you far more options.
JL has announced the "E" series which will be released some time in the future. It's slotted below the Fathom series in their line so I wouldn't expect it to be a platform for new tech.
