I think I saw that it's a 12-inch Peerless XXLS modified to SVS's specs.

I am about to join the SVS club.

Ordered a PB13 Ultra from the local Aussie distributer today and expect delivery this week. smile.gif

I will be running the Ultra in conjunction with a Velodyne so it will be interesting to see if they mesh well.

Will follow up with my impressions when I've given the Ultra a test run.

Congrats! I look forward to your impression!!

Congrats cooksta! Please report back when all setup. Which Velo do you currently operate?

I ordered the SB13 Ultra yesterday after a positive experience with SVS' customer service. $100 off for this month, also!

Looking forward to waking the neighbors.... Will post pics etc once it arrives.

Wow everyone jumping in! Great! Hope everyone is happy with their purchase

On a side note. The little mod I did to my grill worked like a charm. I was able to watch battle:LA yesterday. Ok movie ok bass. Only reason I say ok bass was it wasn't dynamic enough for me. It was very muddy bass. Unlike 9 or httyd which had very distinct bass and rumbling depicting what was seen on the screen

I'm glad your mod worked for you! You're right in about bass in movies -- quantity is not everything. While I can't say the same for the overall movie, I loved the subtle usage of bass in "Snow White and the Huntsman". Not in-your-face at all but a very balanced used of surrounds and LFE. In "Dark Night", the "pressurization" effect is used to add tension at multiple points without it becoming a bombastic bassfest. In "Hanna" I absolutely loved the fleeing reindeer at the beginning, and the low-altitude plane flyover later in the movie. None of this is 5-star list material (well Dark Knight is what, 4.5 stars?) but still usage of LFE stands out more because of its sparsity in my opinion.

Oh cool. Snow White and the huntsman is next on the viewing list.

Congrats on your Ultras and welcome to the SVS family.........biggrin.gif

Yes, please post pics and share with us your initial impressions about these subs.

You will be amazed by the tight and deep bass from these babies (first hand experience on the PB13-Ultra, but I'm positive the SB13 is a solid performer as well). Craftsmanship of these units is something else too.....enjoy!

Well I must warn you the movie is not filled with stellar actors (ahem). But I found both the video and audio top notch. The video is a great test for black nuances when the Queen transforms back after returning to the castle as a flock of crows. And I liked how the horses sounded on the surrounds. Yet it's far from being very memorable movie all things considered... One I really enjoyed recently -- but this is not to everyone's taste -- is "Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy", with a very complex / intricate plot that holds to scrutiny, with a very intense atmosphere underlined by the peculiar musical score. But it's very cerebral, not action-packed, and really, it's not much work for an SVS sub, although it rendered the jazzy score superbly.

Optimum 12; (spl1200 Ultra in Australia).

Will let you all know what I think when I get the Ultra up and running cool.gif

Hey all,

Noob here, first proper post on the forum bar my intro post!

I have managed to pick up (not literally - it weighs almost as much as me!) a secondhand PB12-Plus/2, and so far I am very happy with it smile.gif

It is perhaps overkill for my 20x14x8 kitchen/living room/dining room, especially since I am in a flat wink.gif but I am blessed with proper concrete block construction for the walls and a floor (I presume with wood supports) with a proper concrete skim on it!

I have managed to work through quite a lot of the movies on the Bass Movies Masterlist and have been very impressed with a couple, especially '9' and The Last Airbender! I was less keen on Battle: Los Angeles, though, so I'm pleased so see that I am not the only one who thought the bass was muddled and far from clear:

It seems that my room is a bit 'boomy' at around the bass frequencies in Battle: Los Angeles so I have set the Low Pass Filter at around 67Hz - this is enough to take bass out of male speaking voices in movies and reduce the 'boom' I seem to get if I set the filter higher than that. I was worried it was the Plus/2 itself but I think it must just be in-room response, which is not very helpful...

Anyway, I'm glad to have found this forum, even though it will cost me a lot of money in the future as I now feel the need to build something that will give me crazy ULF extension to pick up where the Plus/2 on 16Hz tune drops off! biggrin.gif
post #8774 of 15660
Battle:la was t boomy it was just too much bass. ( is that possible? Haha). It wasn't well done in my opinion. No dynamics just constantly rumbling and bass. Making the explosions lost in the rest of the soundtrack. Everything else was good you could hear all the dialogue just the bass wasn't nothing special. Unlike almost all of the other five stars. Defiantly wasn't a setup issue

Well I never heard (or seen, for that matter) the Optimum 12, but looking at the specs, it's serious subwoofage alright. It may be able to hold its own for a while with the Ultra biggrin.gif

Welcome to the thread and congrats on your purchase. I'm new to SVS so I checked the Plus/2 and wow, it does look good. I'd have been tempted by this form factor, which is much closer to a proper coffee table smile.gif Which finish did you get?

Well I just ordered a pair of current Pluses for a 20x10x8 room. I guess that makes me a bit insane. Good thing that you have concrete floors with that thing.

Did you measure your in-room frequency response? I myself am planning on using the Pluses in 16 Hz tune, and using the unused headroom to EQ them as flat as I can, as low as I can (though I won't have much to say below 20 Hz in terms of EQ). To go down to 10 Hz I'd have to buy or build a very big sub, which is simply not possible right now (I ordered cylinders). One day... when I'm insanely rich, and have a proper HT room, I'll get the dual Submersives (or dual Funk Audio 18.3) and down I'll go. In the mean time I'm half afraid, half excited about the coming Pluses.

As for movies, I watched "9" with a sub-par subwoofer long ago; maybe I'll try the Last Airbender sometimes. But right now I spend my "alone" time playing Bioshock (yeah I'm that late) and wow. The Big Daddies shake the room; I actually have to fight my fight-or-flight reflex when they come. That game's audio is so well done, I'm half afraid of starting the game each night.

Neutro, any update on your twins?
Don't worry Brian, you'll know when I'll get them biggrin.gif Mason from SBA said they will be shipped "in 10 days or so" last Thursday, so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for a delivery before the weekend of November 17-18. Mason said he'll drop me a line just before shipping my Twin Towers.

Of course it's giving me lots of time to reconsider that purchase... Considering you are ecstatic about the upgrade to a single PB12, and also unforeseen expenses (new winter tires!), maybe I should ask Mason to scale down the order. Then again I think I want to stick to the Plus because of the 16 Hz tuning. So if I feel duals doesn't offer much benefit in my room, maybe I'll just return one of them. But in that case, if I was ready to spend the money on dual Pluses, and if I wish to keep only one, I could probably go with an Ultra instead, just for laughs. (The PC12-Plus is $50 more in Canada than in the US but bizarrely the PC13-Ultra is $100 less, so the difference between the two is only $350).

Well, let's see what the Pluses look like first and foremost tongue.gif
post #8778 of 15660
man your desicions suck hahah good problem to have! but not enviable. too bad it wasnt easy (ie. just going to a store and grabbing them then returning what you dont want)

but STICK with your plusses. I am ecstatic about mine, but i know it could be even better...and if I was single and/or had the money/room...I would want more...but I know mine is great now and will suffice by far until we move and I get a dedicated HT then it will be a simple ADD of another pb12

I know I suck at deciding lol biggrin.gif I know I should stick with the Pluses as I pondered every facet of that decision for much too long now. But pondering is all I can do when I'm just waiting for the Two Towers to get delivered.
are you going to call one isengard and one Mordor?

lol

Hey Neutro - you could do what I did - get one of each - oh, I didn't get he plus though, just the PB12-NSD. Already have the PB13 Ultra - was one of the first owners of that sub in Canada (Bash amp). Just blew a fuse on it recently but it's held up really nice. Great subs both of them. I'm sure the Plus's will be outstanding!

Well that's a great idea, except that your post sent me wondering if those were indeed the Two Towers. This lead to an interesting Wikipedia read as Tolkien himself was not totally sure which two towers the title referred to... I cite:
Quote:
In letters to Rayner Unwin Tolkien considered naming the two as Orthanc and Barad-dûr, Minas Tirith and Barad-dûr, or Orthanc and the Tower of Cirith Ungol.[3][4] However, a month later he wrote a note published at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring and later drew a cover illustration which both identified the pair as Minas Morgul and Orthanc.

So it should be Orthanc (... at Isengard) and Minas Morgul (which is indeed on the edge of Mordor but is not Sauron's fortress (Barad-dur).

Believe it or not I'm not even a LOTR geek.

Well I think I'll get my order first. If I find it so overkill, and find I do not benefit a lot from having duals in my room, I'll then either return one, or return the two and replace them with an Ultra, which is just higher but not wider as far as I can tell from the specs. Or I'll use one and, huh, rent one to a friend biggrin.gif
post #8783 of 15660
Ya know I knew that. But actually forgot. Thanks for the lookup and reminder smile.gif

Ok so sorta bad news but still good

The pin fix on my grill does not work. Game over pulls that sucker right out booooo. Then it starts rattling

Good news. Svs is doing a hot swap. They are sending me a sub to replace mine and I will send mine back AFTER I get the new one. Now that's some great CS!!
I was also thinking about Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos... you know, Fear and Panic... appropriate I think. biggrin.gif

It's great from SVS -- I just hope your next pb will be able to keep its grill on. I heard about grill rattling on the PCs but it seems it's an older issue that is now fixed. Not the same problem as the grill is not fixed the same way on top of the ports. Well I just hope everything is fine with our next subs...
Agreed. I am just paranoid now that there will be some amp issue or something to wrong wig that sub. Cause this sub is mint. Just the stupid grill issue. Plus it's gonna be a pia to move this sub out and the new one in. And recalibrate everything. Maybe I will not re adyssey and just set the spl level to the same as it is now. Idk
post #8788 of 15660
Just watch Snow White. You were right about the bass. Movie was good not great. But now watching live free or due hard. Probably my favorite bass movie. The bass is super powerful and just done right. smile.gif

I don't think it ever happened to me with the SB12 so let's hope the issue is sporadic and won't be there in your replacement. As for recalibrating... If you carefully note down your gain setting, and just swap the same sub model and adjust the gain accordingly, you should be all set or at least pretty close to what you had before. It should work out of the box, calibrate later when you have time or you do another change to your room layout.

I think I saw Live Free or Die Hard in a theater back in the days when I was often seeing movies out of my living room biggrin.gif There is a bunch I should re-watch on my HT setup. In theaters (local ones at least) it's loud but the bass is not as fat and detailed as in my living room. And last time I went to a theater (for MI:4) I was astounded as how better my 3-year-old plasma display was than the low-contrast, full-of-hairlines and other blips projection.

My movie pile of shame (mostly movies I grabbed for $10 at BestBuy and that I have yet to see --I also have a huge videogame pile of shame) now contains: Pan's Labyrinth, Master & Commander, Ong Bak 3, 13 Assassins, Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22, Vexille and Kick-Ass. Movies on my to-watch list furthermore include The Raid: Redemption (yeah I like Thai fight movies biggrin.gif), Cabin in the Woods, Iron Sky, (Battle: LA, Battleship, Immortals, Titans, etc. for the wow-bang factor), plus a couple of oldies that I somehow missed.
yeah i figured that would work, actually that's exactly what ed Mullen just emailed me about settings to swap out.\

yeah Live free is so well mixed. very dynamic sound and bass not muddy or bloated, plus I enjoy it immensely for a movie. looking forward to the new one coming out soon.

cabin in the woods was actually pretty good minus towards the end. I always find movies do that...they are good, then take a turn for the worst towards the end...why do that...even in Live free, once the harrier comes in its like come on! a little more unrealistic than the rest.if thats even possible haha

Immortals, titans both very good movies (I have to rewatch Immortals now with the new sub) if you enjoy that greek gods stuff....my next on the list is Percy jackson...since I love greek mythology movies.

battle LA meh. I also just re-picked up on BR U571 for 5$ such a good movie and great bass too.

maybe SVS will send me an ultra by "mistake" haha
