I was referred to the HD section from the dvd recorders forum so here goes..

Ok today i agreed with directv to get an HD receiver.
what hardware do i want from them if my intentions are to eventually burn hd content to dvd or blu ray? dvr, tivo , etc or what?
does it matter? does the model/brand of dvr or tivo or whatever matter or will the quality of the hd be the same irregardless of the brand or model? any other hardware i would need from directtv?

I don't know a lot abou this so here goes..

is a dvdr with hard drive the only way to record something from satellite in HD?

my dilemna would be archiving the recordings for future technology to fit more hd content on a disk, i.e. blu ray. So is there a way to get the recorded HD movie from the dvdr to some sort of storage device, hdd or whatever to store for later on,? if so what are recommended storage devices...hdd's?
Once i get the hd content transferred to a storage device, can i later author an hd disk using that archived file or will it have to transfer again?

and this is my first step i guess in my journey to learn HD now..

IF it is possible what storage devices are recommended...regular hdds?

Then how do I get it off the dvdr without losing any quality and store it as it was recorded as HD? What if any solutions are available that would help in this endeavour?

I had thought it was like when you record to minidv tape it was basically a digital file then and transferring to computer you transferred a dv file the same as it is on the tape, with no loss but i understand HD is not like that....

So i need suggestions on how to remove a recorded HD movie or football game recorded on HD dvdr hdd to a storage solution(what storage solutions are available), and remove/transfer it from the dvdr without loss and still in the HD format?

Does this make sense?

Basically just like minidv tapes..you can transfer via firewire or dv input to a computer hdd and store it there and it will remain a dv file and no loss. I am trying to find out if the same is possible with an HD movie recorded to a dvdr, to transfer it intact as HD file(if it is recorded to a file type, is it?) or whatever to a storage device for later when I can burn it to a disk for watching when possible, and how to go about it and what would be needed. If i record in HD i would want it to remain HD wherever I archive it to.

I had thought of just recording till the dvdr hdd was full and then putting another drive in but I don't know..that is how amateur I am...haha... please advise and help? and if any of it is possible, recommendations for software and/or equipment would be appreciated....i have some canopus stuff in my computer now for what that is worth..thanks..t
