All this "they postponed it for the PS3" discussion is moot, IMO. I highly doubt that Sony didn't know they were going to be short diodes and need to postpone until today. As I see it, it's just another case of Sony stringing its loyal customers along a little at a time like a donkey chasing a carrot tied to a stick. What has Sony done lately that gives anyone any confidence that the player really will be available Dec 4th? and not another delay announced just days before?

How many BDP-S1's do we expect Sony to sell, 10,000-20,000 max? Thats a drop in the ocean compared to the PS3's 400,000 units.

The BDP-S1 is delayed for another reason IMO.

You're right. The Sony has substantially inferior PQ to the Panny unit and needs more work.

With all due respect how does anyone know this yet?

:)

But you seem to have an insiders take on Sony. Not implying that you are a Sony insider but BD seems to get a pass as far as insider information is concerned, but M$ does not on the AVS forums. For all you folks That Are Insiders, please identify yourselves as insiders. Penton - Man not saying that you are.

But for those that are, please identify the company you work for. Some identify as BD supporters but will not disclose the Co. they work for. Why?

With all this going on from lauch date, can you really blame em?

The operative word here is "Deja Vu" and Dec 4th is Groundhog Day for BluRay fans.

Bingo.
M$ backed HD-DVD as part of the GAME war. Even the MPEG2 vs VC1 is a bigger battle than the "going no where" HD front. For many months, there will be ~no $$$ in HD discs and no format winner. It did not even matter that $ony produced garbage BD titles. It does not matter that Sony is not even making a BD player. So far, it all adds up to a big ZERO.

The GAME war is big. Live or die for Sony. I must say, as a long term, hard core M$ basher, that M$ has acted with much more dignity than Sony. But, I don't game so I don't care.

Keep one thing in mind. The studios, not CEs, are the losers due to the format war. AND, there is only one reason that we even have a format war - THE STUDIOS. Even now, the war is instantly over if the studios decide to produce titles in both formats. The difference - studios could put extra on BD and charge extra - well, I mean every one except Sony doing MPEG2 to selling less for more.

Please, let's not hear about the extra pennies to do dics in both formats. And, I'm not interested in how Netflix's machines would have to recognize more unique lot numbers. Re B&M, sorry - do not care - carry one or the other, both or neither.

To quote the trash collector working in a building during the development of Space Telescope - "It don't matter, eventually, I get it all."

LOL. Wow, imagine waking up to the news of another Sony delay and thinking it must be - yesterday again. Just to realize it is just another day and just another delay.

That makes sense in some ways, but I'm not totally sure of that.

Even Sony must realize that the PS3 will not have as high an attach rate as the standalone players - so movie sales will suffer for every diode which is diverted to the PS3.

Movie sales are what is going to "win" the format war, so this would not be a brilliant move on their part, unless simply to save the PS3 at expense of Bluray format.

Good thing that's nothing to do with either HD DVD or Bluray :)
rdjam,

That is exactly what they are doing. There is another thread here that indicates that Sony isnt going to make their year end PS3 shipments. So, they are probably saving the diodes to increase the PS3 numbers, so they dont look too horrible.

I disagree. HD-DVD was backed by the DVD Forum who also backs DVD.

Sony released DVD+R which went against the DVD Forum accepted DVD-R

Sony released Betamax, Mini-disc, UMD, Mirco-MV, SACD, Memory Stick, etc. All failures in my book for acceptance for anything other than Sony products.

Toshiba and Sony are to blame for the format war. I am all for healthy competition so I can't say that I am upset.

I'm not sure what you disagree with. Eventually, everything does turn into trash. (Actually, I do see your point.)

Re "healthy competition", if BD wins, they will have to earn it. I am a big fan of this war. It's a good thing. (I will not be buying either for a long time ($$$.))

Sadly I think Sony has sold out Blu-Ray for PS3. Blu-Ray Movies were more of a R&D venture, PS3 is essential to the core of the organization. It's a simple numbers game for them. Either they make some Blu-Ray standalones and help push that format while losing signficant PS3 sales and having MS take even more market share. Or put Blu-Ray standalones on hold to battle the 360 to keep the company alive...

It's all about numbers, and they aren't looking good for Sony these days.

Silly Soony! :p

Let's be honest. Sony is having a horrible year http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/tic...&Symbol=US:SNE
At this point Sony realizes they will not win the format war AND the game war. Better to put all your resources in gaming, which is pretty obvious what they are doing.
There will be no "Trojan horse" to save blu-ray. The PS3's are already spoken for and blu-ray sales haven't made any real impact. Like many of Sony's other failed propriatary formats, it appears they'll be adding another. Sorry to have to tell it like it is.

I should of clarified. You said the studios are to blame. Yes, they are choosing sides, but I guarantee the reason for choosing sides has zero to do with the actual product.

Just like Sony doesn't like VC-1 since the best tools are made by Microsoft who supports HD-DVD. A lot of poltics.

I think a standard format would of been nice. But with two competing formats I look forward to competing technology and price wars. Well, that is, until someone reveals the silver bullet called a dual format player.

The story with this player reminds of the Simpsons episode where Bart takes over Kamp Krusty. (the flashback as told by Lisa. <Bart clutching and stroking the Krusty doll while repeating Krusty's coming , Krustys coming>....)

As funny as it is to watch a player get delayed repeatedly, it's still preferable to not having any other players scheduled to come out.
Seems that Sony's incompetence knows no bounds. Tons of delays, bad PQ movies, etc. Blu-ray is a good format in theory, but Sony should really have the rights to it revoked and be forced to sell it to a company that can handle the task. Of course I am mostly kidding as I do support free market.

But wow, it is starting to get funny now.

At least Blu-ray's supporters are keeping this ship from completely sinking.

Geeeze. I'm in SHOCK. Just checked the Sony Style website - and they ARE giving away free Fifth Element discs w/ the their new player! I thought everyone was joking about that! Why on earth would they do that??? Upon playing the disc - people will return the machine!
Unless I'm missing something here and the title's been recently re-mastered - or will be by the time the machine is released.

They figured they might as well give them away since they can't sell them! :D
