But now I hear there is no OSD using HDMI and no ability to rename HDMI inputs. The on screen menus are flakey when using HDMI. Sometimes the HDMI output doesn't work on a given HDMI input on the TV, or doesn't work at all. Sometimes it reboots your DTV receiver. And people don't like the scaler (say it's worse than letting the TV do the scaling).
So my conclusion is that for me, wanting a good user interface and flawless HDMI switching, this product is not ready. Maybe they'll make some updates down the line to address this stuff. I called Crutchfield and cancelled my order.
Good decision. I own one because I got a great great price on it, but I think I will stay away from Sony receivers from now on. This unit is so quirky and has so many bugs in it that its rediculous for a 1500.00 product. The sound quality is awesome, but the internal scaler looks like someone took a dump on the picture before is output.
For example, I tried watching the Incredibles hooked up directly to the projector and it looks great. If I run it through the 5200ES, then the picture is way off. I would compare it to cable quality. Yes! cable quality. It is that ridiculous. Colors are off, and scenes just seem alot darker.
At this point, I don't even care for the scaler in it, I just want the damn machine to upconvert everything through HDMI and not blank out on me. I want to be able to switch inputs and not have the 5200ES to not malfunction.
Oh one other thing, when I switch from HDMI to an analog source like component and the picture doesn't appear, I can hear the 5200ES clicking inside like its trying to switch something internally. Every 3 seconds or so it clicks and I have to turn off the machine just to get it to stop.
If we have a Sony rep in here, please help me out. I think this is the alpha version of this line of receiver.
