Magnavox 37MF231D/37

I have the opportunity to get a Magnavox 37MF231D/37 LCD for a really great price where I work through the employee discount. Unfortunately we don't sell any large LCD's other than Mag so I'm wondering if this is a good set for the price or should I hold off and get a Sharp, Sony or Samsung. I need a 37" or 40" due to a relatively small living area. Any recommendations or has anyone purchased this particular set? I also saw in consumer reports that it was rated high among 37" models but I am taking that with a grain of salt. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Either you work there and you are getting the old 10% discount or you know something I don't know because I could have sworn it was going to be $1199.

I saw this TV (37MF231D/37) at Target last night, and am strongly considering it. My issue is that I have an entertainment center which has a 37" wide opening. It appears that the side speakers are removable on it. Has anyone tried this? And, would I feel the pain if I were to swap in a pair of bookshelf speakers in the tv's place. I know it's a waste to throw out half the tv, so to speak, but otherwise, it's a beautiful monitor.

Well I had made up my mind until I saw this tv. I was originally going to get an LG 42L2CD. Now I am not sure. The specs look close to the same on paper. Any thoughts between the two? They both look good. I will use it for cable, dvd and XBox and maybe eventually Hi Def.

I personally would avoid comparing two different sized tvs. It's confusing enough with all of the options available.
I decided on the size that was appropriate for the space (in my case 37") and then began shopping for the best quality vs best price.

I believe just two screws hold each speaker on. It shouldn't be much trouble to get them off. My only concern about the monitor at this point is that the remote is the only access to the menu. I would prefer at least a few buttons on the actual TV but I guess I'm just old school like that.

Last time the batteries died in my remote, I didn't watch tv for 2 days. (even though it had buttons in the front. Yes, I'm that lazy).
I did look at one of these tvs, and it appears you are right, there's a metal plate screwed to the monitor and speakers that hold them on, plus the audio cable is detachable. I know this tv got rave review for sound quality from consumer reports. How much of that would be the speakers(since I'll be replacing them) and how much of that would be the actual audio signal processing that is internal to the tv?

I'm going on as many forums as possible to tell people to stay away from this TV. I bought one. It looks awesome, when it works. It often will go blank. Sometimes it will stay that way until you unplug it and plug it back in. It doesn't matter what the input is. I've used S-Video, Component, and HDMI. I've had it going through and not going through my receiver. It also does if from my DVD player (HDMI, component, S-Video), from my cable box (HDMI, component, S-Video), and also my XBox 360 (component, S-Video). I've installed a power regulator and moved everything electronic at least six feet away. It still does it. So, going through all of this, I ended up going five days over the labor warranty. FIVE DAYS!!! Now I have to pay two to three hundred bucks to fix it, fifty miles away, and they won't guarantee that they can even fix it. Magnavox won't bend the rules a tiny bit to keep a loyal customer happy. I will never buy Magnavox again.

The reliability of this set is questionable. When the xxMF231Ds first came out, we had the 32" and 37" die within the first month. Several of the people that bought this set had similar problems. This issue coupled with the terrible off-angle viewing make this set a no-go.

i've actually been very happy with this TV. Great quality, in my apartment the sound is good, the colors (after configuration) look great. And i'm just using Component cables, no HDMI yet.

Hey all..quick question about this TV. My dad is thinking of picking one up.

I read that the speakers don't come attached to the tv.. which is good because my dad's entertainment center isn't big enough to fit the speakers attached. But, how are the speaker cables attached to the tv? Will he be able to attach other speakers? He doesn't have a digital receiver. Thanks

I have had a great experience with this tv! So far I have used it with a reciever, xbox 360, hi def time warner box, HD DVD player, all with very little difficulty.

I disconnected the speakers that came with it but left them attached because they look good.

Currently I am waiting on 20' of hdmi cable to pipe in my desktop by converting the dvi out on my video card to hdmi.

WHat it lacks is:
DVI input, more HDMI!!

Better late than never!

I've owned the 37" Magnavox 231 for 13 months now and I am EXTREMELY happy with it. I get nice QAM tuning without a box (with a peak in on any On-Demand choices my neighbotrs are making.)
I particularly like the remote for it's simplicity.

I use the "headphone out" jack to connect to my old Pro Logic style receiver and get nice, though manufactured, 4 channel sound...well actually 6 becasue I usually play the sets speakers too.

The set is extremely adept at upscaling my DVD's and they look great.

Best was I got a wonderful price by waiting 6 weeeks with a rain check: $799 which was pretty good back in March '07.

It will soon move into the bedroom and be replaced by a 1080p in a 46 or 47 incher for the Living Room.

But Consumer Reports was right, it was indeed a Best Buy.

Joey,
If you are still here after all this time, I guess by now you found the MENU button on top of the set?

Love the tv but it wont pick up all of the digital channels it should, has anyone else had this problem. I am using cable with no box and should get 4 local digital channels only getting 2 and im using the latest firmware. The crazy thing is at one time i did get those two channels my roommate has a sony 32 inch lcd and his tv picks up all 4 with the same cable hookup.....another crazy thing is that i can pick up the digital music channels with no box and my roommate can't. This all happened after an autoprogram scan go figure.

Dreson,

Keep re-autoprogramming every so often.
It also LEARNS to find new channels you force on it. It WILL find the programs your freind gets...just put in the same QAM number.
For example, if you bang in 13.2 and let it work at it, sometimes for MINUTES at a time, it will find the channel and put it in memory.

It also autoprograms LITE every time you shut it off.

I get a kick out of the fact that this set seems to have a unique personality.

(Psst, if it hangs up forever, pull the plug and wait 30 seconds to reconnect. It DOES sometimes get caught in endless loops that only GOD understands!)

I REALLY like my set.
