Blue Haze on Black Letterbox Bars -- Philips RPTV

In the past 2 weeks, I've noticed a blue haze that appears on the black borders bars around 4:3, and letterbox feeds. The TV is a Philips model 55pw9363. I've enclosed 2 pictures in which the problem should be obvious. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here's what I've tried so far:

1. User Convergence
2. Service menu convergence
3. Cleaning the crt lenses
4. Hold power unplug set (reset)

Nothing is working. Even if I crank the contrast down to zero, the haze is still there. If however I crank the brightness up to 100 the haze is gone but, black is then gray.

Any suggestions?

A few tests to do:

In the user menu turn the Color level to zero. You should see a nice B&W picture, shades of gray only, no red grn or blu tinting.

Take the screen assembly off and look down into the blu tube (Tv On). Do you see any cloudy fluid or stuff growing on the inside surfaces of the blu tube?

Thanks. I'll give it a try this weekend and report back. If there was something floating around in the tubes, what kind of repair would I be looking at?

Well, at lunch I tried your tests. With the color at 0, I did get a black and white image. Looking at the blue crt while on, I couldn't really see anything down inside of it, I looked close. If I cover the blue crt up with say a book, then the blue haze is gone, but of course everything looks green.

What's next?

BlitzNick, I have the same television as you. I will check out tonight to see if I get the same blue haze.

Can you tell me what your original settings were thru the service menu for geometry? I think I may have tweaked a lil too much and when I put my original settings, the geometry seems worse, so i think I wrote them down wrong.

From the pics it seem that brightness color or contrast is not set correctly. Have you tried using the DVE calibrating dvd? ALso what color setting are you using? WARM? NORMAL? I use normal for my philips 55pw9363.

Blitz have you noticed your screen shifting ever so slightly?

I don't notice the screen shifting, and I keep my color temp at Warm. I haven't messed with the geometry settings, but if you can tell me how to get to them, I'd be glad to let you know what they are. If you have an HD source/DVD player hooked to your tv could you let me know what your "personal" settings are for those inputs?

Thanks.

The 2 service codes that I know are:

062596 ->status

062597 -> status

I didn't see any geometry settings in either of those menus.

The geometry setting is in the menu option that doesnt give u the manual convergence choices. it is the last option and then it takes u to geometry. I will go into it tonight and post exactly how to find the original settings.

It would be greatly appreciated.

the reason why I initially changed geometry was that I connected cable box thru dvi and picture was shifted to the right so i went in and centered it, but then that thru off my component picture. I got it almost right but have some BOW messed up that I cant get straight.

Do you still have warranty on the tv or not? I would first try to calibrate using DVE to see if that minimizes the blue haze. from the pics it looks like it only happen when there is something very light in color on the screen.
Try using NORMAL for color to see if that makes it better.

I will also post my settings. I changed them since I used the DVE disk so this may not be optimal, but again its up to user preference anyway.

I don't have DVE, but you're right, it only happens when a bright object (white) is very near to a dark object (black). Let me know exactly how to find those geometry settings and I'll post mine. They're still factory, since I haven't messed with them.

press 062596 status

then scroll down to GDE SAM (last option), press right on tv remote control

then go to geometry, press right again on remote

settings should be there, use up and down to scroll through all the settings.

These are my personal picture settings:

BRIGHTNESS: 51
COLOR: 50
PICTURE: 60
SHARP: 20
TINT: 0
COLOR: NORMAL

Since you havent tried to the DVE, if my settings dont work, you can pick up DVE at amazon for about $15 bucks or on ebay. WEll worth the $15 imho and it may save you a call to tv repairman.

How do you clean the CRT lenses? I have warranty, should I have best buy do that?

Here's my factory Geo settings:

Wide Blank 7
Hor Shift 21
Hor Parallel 8
EW Width 38
EW Para 36
EW Trap 31
Hor Bow 7
Ver Slope 35
Ver Ampl 38
S Cor 31
Ver Shift 31
Fast Blank 1

You clean the lenses by taking the rear cover off and gently, with a non amonia based cleaner, wipe the lenses. I didn't spray the cleaner directly on the lenses, but on the cloth itself. If you've got a warranty though, I probably wouldn't bother opening the case. Let the service dept. worry about it.

Thanks for the settings. My TV actually looks a little better with those, but I've still got a blue haze, though not as bad.

thanks for your settings. try using the dve disk, it should help out. i have a really bright room that i watch tv in so my settings may not be optimal for you.

im going to see if putting ur settings in fixies my problem.

thanks

I have the exact same set, and the exact same problem. Please advise if you were ever able to resolve or improve the problem. I just purchased this, and it looks terrible as it is.

CompUSA is sending out techs this Monday to see if the TV can be repaired. Hopefully it can't. LOL. I want a new TV.

Sorry guys, I've been away for a while. Changing the coolant in the blue crt fixed my problem. It cost me around $250 for in home service.

Can you take a picture of how it looks now? I'm curious.

Sorry about the size. I hate my iMac. Also, I had to take a standard def picture, so that you could see the black bars at the top, bottom, and sides. Looks ok to me.

Thanks.

I got my TV back yesterday. It looks AMAZING! I couldn't be more happy. The contrast levels kill my LCD and all in all its a great set.
