To quote the review..

This stylized picture finally delivers the goods for Blu-ray enthusiasts waiting on a rock solid transfer.

How many discs do these guys even see? I guess they missed all the Warner VC-1 titles that are identical to HD-DVD. Actually most titles since the initial first batch of Sony titles. Still trying to show their bias, even when they don't have a leg to stand on.

If I remember correctly, this was the website that had that bogus "T2" Blu-Ray review before the disc came out this past summer. Apparently, the person "reviewing" the disc just put a bunch of B.S. in his review, people here called him on it (and were right), but he stood by his lie. The site's owner had to come on here and apologize for the whole debacle.

I'm pretty sure that UpcomingDiscs was the site.

EDIT: I was right. It is this site.

THEBLAND AKA JEFF from this forum.

This disc was actually reviewed by AVSForum regular "thebland". He knows what he is talking about - and has now reviewed 3 BD titles for UpcomingDiscs.

Looks like I will add this disc to my collection.

Hey cut me some slack here...I started after whatever this T2 controversy. Sounds interesting though...I like controversy!!. Besides my first Blu Ray review of Click gave it a less than biased 3.5/5 on video.

When Jeremy hired me on at UpcomingDiscs, there was no talk of bolstering up video / audio scores. Or anything of the sort. HD DVD guys may not like my opinions, but when it comes to puttnig my name on a review, you can rest assured it is an honest take of what I see. If you have seen my DVD reviews stickied in the DVD Forum over the last 2 years, I call 'em like I see 'em. I can assure that BD bias will not permiate my reviews. Read the review, watch the movie and see for yourself. I know many buy discs on what they read in reviews, and I am not going to BS the folks here into buying crappy transfers if they look bad!

In all seriousness, th Brothers Grimm picture is gorgeous and right up there with some of the better HD DVDs. It is not perfect but it is pretty damn close. The audio is friggin' phenominal..and many here no I am a bass fanatic!!

I have Blu Ray versions of Kung Fu Hustle, Monster house, Silent Hill, and Haunted Mansion coming up. I am ONLY reviewing Blu Ray titles. But I do own a HD-DVD player as well....so I can compare. As a side, I do have HD DVD of Aeon Flux that I am slated to do as well... so watch for that!!

Jeff, any comments on the PCM soundtrack?

This the Achilles heal of my reviews. My Halcro processor is awaiting an update to enable LPCM over HDMI. So for now, it is strickly DD or DTS. Sorry...(It should be within the next couple of months - It's killing me).
Thanks, nice review BTW.

Looking forward to more, can you swing about 4 or 5 a week?
Great work Jeff. I have found your past reviews of standard dvd's to be right on the money and will eagerly await more BD reviews. I trust you will be reviewing Kingdom of Heaven as soon as it's available?
This is definitely a great transfer. Those armor vests they wear are blinding!
I have asked the question las week in another thread but got no answer. I therefore ask it again here: has anyone compared the US BD of Brothers Grimmm with the Japanese HD DVD?

Yeah, when I read the review and saw, "I chose the DD 5.1" I said, "wtf? Pick the PCM track!".

Then I read it was reviewed by, 'theBland' and a big wtf hit me. You can't just hook it up through the analog in on your pre/pro? It must be digital? Ahhhh....

Nope, never pinned that on you. In fact, posted my reply before I saw that it was you who had written the review. You, sir, are definitely a plus to the site. I just had a flashback to earlier this year when I saw the site's name.

I agree this movie is excellent. Too bad a lot more releases are not as good as this one.
I'll side with the reviewer on this one. It is the best title I have including Kingdom of Heaven and MI-III......
Just watched this movie yesturday and I have to say the PQ was hardly a ten. I was actually dissapointed and just choked it up to another blu-ray mpg file. Like alot or most of my blu-ray I saw grain where I shouldn't have, and I was really disapointed to see many scenes with poor contrast ratio only to go to another seen and it was fixed again. I couldn't help but to think if this was in HD-DVD it would of looked as nice as all my others do, grain free and amazing detail. Maybe my (ruby) SXRD just shows to much detail/flaw in the image at 120 inches? But then why not in HD-DVD if that were the case? Are thier any blu-ray in VC1? I need to see if that solves my problem. I also thoght Brothers was a bit boring and odd/strange, but good for the rental at least. I sure wish you guys that loved the PQ could see it running on my setup and know what I'm reffering to. Any fans of Blu-ray in the S. Cal area?
PS even my roomate said she has seen much better images on the projector after the movie was over, I dont' think she wanted to hurt my feelings on the blu-ray title...lol

I still stand by my previous comments that The Brothers Grimm is one of the worst Blu-ray disc's I have ever watched.

It reaks of pumped up contrast, extreme posterization, muddy colors, etc.

Not to mention the movie just plain sucked.

Ok, so a more condesed version of what I said.
seriously I think these movies may look good on a 40" or 55" plasma/dlp/ect ect, but when you get to the size of 100" inches or so, you REALLY see what's wrong in a transfer, and I'm constantly dissapointed with blu-ray, and that pisses me off since I think the format just makes more sense. But hoping it will get better.

Try Casanova. It's in VC1 with peaks above 44Mbps. Also try Crank or Descent, they're in AVC with peaks close to 40. The problem is not necessarily the codec, it could be the process used to create the digital master. In this sense, digital HDCAM should always have an advantage over film, because film always have to be scanned with older equipment using CCDs that might be a couple of gens behind the latest HDCAM.

Does anyone know if Grimm is film or hdcam?

Scanners and digital cameras are equally affected by CCD progress. Scanners don't lag behind. Grimm is 35mm film.

There is an HD DVD edition of The Brothers Grimm, but it only looks fair as well.
