Saw Toshiba HD-DVD commercial today on TV

During SportsCenter on ESPN HD. It was a guy on the rung of a helicopter holding on to a woman dangling by one arm. They fly over a city and finally the woman manages to pull herself back up onto the helicopter. They both kinda give each other a look and then let go, and next thing you know they're in their living room on the couch. Then there's a narrator that says "Toshiba HD-DVD, so real you'll believe your there" (or something like that). The weird thing is at the end they showed the XA1, not one of the G2 units.

Overall, I was kinda dissapointed. It wasn't a very entertaining, captivating, or creative commercial. It probably cost them an arm and a leg to make it too. Hopefully they'll make a campaign/series of commericials like TI is doing with DLP.

Sorry I didn't realized it was an old commercial. This is the first time I've seen anything about HD-DVD on TV besides the "also available on HD-DVD" after some commercials for DVD releases.

I checked about 10 audio and video magazines for the month of november at Barnes and Noble just yesterday, and all of them had Blu-ray advertisement from Stereophile to Sound and vision. I don't remember seeing one from the HD-dvd camp.

Check out this week's Entertainment Weekly, inside front cover and page 1, and I think the word is out as far as the Video/Audio magazines goes ( about how good HD DVD is over Blu Ray), HD DVD is going after the mass market now.

It is a good one though.

Yeah isn´t it a bit strange that there´s a LOT of Blu-Ray commercials everywhere, but STILL HD-DVD is selling a lot better

HD-DVD don´t need hype. It sneaks in like a Ninja in the night and gets you

If the audio & video skipps it's definitely an add for Gen 1 players

Nah, that was fixed with firmware 2.0 (BTW seems to never happen with 5.1 analog out, only SPDIF)

However, it would be accurate though if there was a extra twenty seconds of blank screen as the commerical booted up.

I found at least one HD-DVD ad in my recent issue of Sound & Vision.

I think the HD-dvd camp should get a little bit more agressive in promoting their format, I think HD-dvd deserves a chance to exist.

They show this commercial on HD-NET alot. Makes me itchy to buy an HD-XA1!

Last night on HDnet I seen a HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc commercial for Mission: Imposible III.

I also see the Toshiba commercial quite often on HDNET. I wish they'd bring out a new one though. Kinda getting tired of the Helicopter one.

As Boo pointed out, there is a very nice 2-page ad right within the front cover of this week's Entertainment Weekly. This is prime real estate and I'm sure it wasn't cheap.

I saw this commercial last night (College Gamenight on ESPN2) but they have replaced the XA1 with the A2.

Yep. I saw it last night about 7 pm Central time on Discovery HD Theater. I knew it was a G2 player....I just wasn't sure which one it was.

It just further proves what I have been saying about Toshiba's pathetic marketing department. They are using a commercial showing a player that was released what... almost a year ago!!
Toshiba is hideous at marketing. Its part of the reason why they have no studio support and the reason I have not bought into the HD-DVD format.

Why should we back a format owned by Toshiba, when Toshiba it self does not seem to care of its demise in this war.

You are quoting a post from last fall
All of the commercials from this past weekend and during this week have displayed the second generation player.

Many, like yourself, continue to criticize HD DVD and Toshiba's marketing, but for the most part it is without any basis in experience or expertise and particularly, without any knowledge of the corporate planning/context their efforts are developed and executed within. I would suggest a bit of patience and let things 'play out' over the remainder of the year. It is apparent that there is a longer-term plan/strategy being played out from the HD DVD side rather than a "knee jerk", "say anything" set of reactions.
