Has anyone tried the Onkyo Onkyo DV-CP704B HDMI changer?

My Denon 1815 just bit the dust again. Any info on this $200 Onkyo HDMI changer would be appreciated. Thanks

I bought one this week and it is supposed to be here on Friday. Hopefully it works out. From what I could find, it appears to be one of the only HDMI DVD changers that will shuffle songs across CDs instead of just shuffling songs one the current CD. We'll see.

I have been considering this unit as well. Does this Onkyo player provide upconvert capability? Otherwise I am also looking at the Sony DVPNC85H player. Shuffling songs across CDs is not a huge requirement, but would be nice to have if the same player does upconverting.

Any comparative notes would be appreciated.

The manual says it is upconverting. There's not much out there as far as reviews go, but I was happy with my older Onkyo equipment. So, I thought I would give it a try.

For me, the shuffle was important b/c we'll load up the changer during parties and just hit shuffle. What's the point in a changer that doesn't shuffle? It is my understanding that the nc85 won't do this.

I've read that Onkyo has issues with Lip Sync.... or at least there have been issues in the past. Do you (or anyone else) know if this unit has similar issues?
I have not heard that about this unit. The lip synch issue is the reason I decided against the yamaha c950 changer though. Would you mind sharing with the rest of us where you heard that the Onkyo had lip synch issues?

I read it here somewhere on AVS (I knew I should have marked that thread)

After some searching and reading (again) I think this problem was model specific to the DV-SP1000 DVD player, and not the CP704. But I will continue to look and If I come across it again, I'll post a link.

I did quite a bit of searching, as you probably did as well, on this model and found very little. I don't know if it's because it may be new or what. Hopefully, it will be a good one.

I am curious as well.
I have a Sony dvp80 that works wel, but am always looking....
The reviews on the Onkyo 802 were that it had great audio, but lacking in video. Hopefully they have fixed that this year. And since they have updated the 700 series, will they update the 800 series?

Well, I received the CP704 on Friday. Got it hooked up to my old Toshiba 32" SD CRT via component cables. At first, I couldn't get it programmed because it was sending an HD signal to my non-HD TV. I then hooked up the composite video signal from the player to the front panel of my TV so that I could tell the DVD player that my TV was non-HD.

So far, I like the player. It definitely will shuffle from disc to disc when listening to CDs (something that was very high on my list since I wanted to combine my CD player and DVD player into one component). The PQ is good, but I haven't received my new TV to comment on the upconversion capabilities. I will report back on that later.

Yes, it does upconvert. And to my eyes, it does so very well. I'll admit I am not an expert on this. I hooked it up, via HDMI, to my new Samsung 5053 last night and it looked great.

Didn't see any synch issues with audio and video.

I hooked up this component today with a brand new pannny plasma (42600u) and onkyo reciever (674S). it's connected via hdmi to the receiver and then via hdmi to the tv. when i turned it on for the first time it seemed to be working fine, but then after about 3 minutes it said something like "action not allowed at this time" and then it went to the onkyo still screen (on tv) and basically froze (said "onkyo dvd" while on, and after turning off said "good bye", but the goodbye did not disappear. i did hard resets, i unplugged it, i tried everything, but had no luck. the maching was completely frozen. i unplugged the entire system and after doing that the machine finally worked again and i could get my dvd out, but then after another 3 minutes of playing a dvd it started saying "bad disc" or "no disc" and then the same lockup thing happened? i have heard of lockup issues from electric interference, but i don't really know much about that. i would appreciate any insight. thanks in advance.

That doesn't sound right. You should return it and get a new one.

Have you tried plugging it into the TV directly?

Any more info on how the CP704 works? I haven't seen any recent updates.

I would probably pair it with the onkyo 604 using hdmi.

Does it send 480i?

TR

EDIT:
I found this thread for a little updating - http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...6+disc+changer

Still have question about what it can output like 480i?
It gives you a choice of outputs, like 480p, 720p, 1080i. I think 480i is in there if you want it. I'd have to check mine when I get home.

BTW, you can get them for $150 (or less) refurbed from Shoponkyo.com. Mine came looking pristine. Didn't look refurbed at all. Even came with batteries for the remote and cables, which they say aren't always included.
It sure looks like a good option to tide me over till the HD wars are over.

I'll be looking to see if yours does 480i because I heard that was the best to output over and let my Pio 5070 do the converting.

Thanks,

TR

Okay, it does not send 480i over HDMI. The only choices are 480p, 720p, or 1080i. I think it sends 480i over component with progressive scan turned off, but I'm not sure (I don't have spare component cables to test this.)

I've been very pleased (so far) with ours. We use the Party Mode all the time with CDs.

Thanks guys. For the price and the function I think this will be the one. I'm not going to be a stickler for 480i.
