Wife and I looked for around for the longest and time after time just found ourselves in front of this and a couple of other Sony models. That and a pretty good deal since we got two of them. Also Sony has a pretty good rep for solid manufacturing.

3. What you like best about your LCD.
Very vibrant. Good HD sources are OUTSTANDING. Light sensor is cool although I'll probably be turning that off once i get it somewhat tweaked. Sleek looking. MUCHO wow factor, low on my "must have" scale but still nice to have some wow factor from guests.

4. What you don't like about your LCD.
Not very good at "disguising" crappy sources.

5. What "Feature(s)" you wish your LCD had.
Picture in Picture (How and why that's left out is beyond me). Wish the remote was more robust.

6. What advice or suggestion would you make to the "Manufacturer" about your LCD.

7. What was your biggest "Surprise" after you received your LCD.
How big it actually is when you get it home. Against all those 40+ inchers in the store it looked the right size for our two bedrooms but once we got them in place man these things are a bit bigger than what i thought. Could have went 30 or high 20's just as easy

8. What "Problems or Issues" have you had with your LCD.
As was said before, seems like some programs and sources have no blur at all yet the weaker and crappier the signal/source the more blur you get. Although at it's worse it's very slight but still.

9. Do you really think that todays "Prices" are worth it.
A better question is "Is it worth it to you". 2 years ago, 2 years from now. Prices are gonna be what they're gonna be. It's just a matter of do you want it now. That goes for anything.

I can't wait for the day everything is in HD. I hope I'm still alive by then.

- Picture quality, value, PC resolution

- HD image quality, and 1920x1080 image quality on the computer looks just as pristine as my Dell 2405FPW

- Black levels when viewing at night in a dark room, but not worth whining about after making backlight/brightness adjustments.

- A USB port would've been nice. HDMI 1.3...one can dream

- In the manual, include the info about how you get that screen to pop up with the Firmware & resolution info. I found out about that on this forum!

7. What was your biggest "Surprise" after you received your LCD.
- all the inputs reside on either side of the TV. Very convenient. And I knew 1920x1080 on the PC would look good but not as pretty as this.

8. What "Problems or Issues" have you had with your LCD.
- PIP mode has a bug where it won't remember the settings you leave it at. It's odd because every other adjustment made in the menu gets remembered.

9. Do you really think that todays "Prices" are worth it.
- From where I purchased it from, absolutely. I see smaller-sized 1366x768 TV's at Best Buy/CompUSA that go for more than what I payed for my Westy out the door at JR.com and I just laugh to myself.

10. Any additional information that you want to add is encouraged.
- The lack of an ATSC tuner is a good move, making the price attractive. Nearly everyone who buys these TVs has some form of digital cable and won't use an HD antenna.

Maybe an additional HDMI connection, I have two DVIs but only one HDMI, would rather have had 2 hdmi and one dvi.

Crap remote, make it look like it came with a nice TV

Ease of use and quality, there are a lot of posts about problems, and I had none, beautiful set.

This tv with my TiVo S3 is an amazing combo, I highly recommend everyone save some money on their set by getting the westy, and using the cash you saved to get the TiVo S3

All of the Above with the added bonus I found that it does 1920 x 1200 Resolution off my PC's Video card.

4. What you don't like about your LCD.

Not much, but here's some nitpicking.

a. Can't do PIP with more than one HDMI or the VGA input source.
b. Can't Upgrade the firmware ourselves through a RS-232 port or USB port
c. Can't do side by side PIP. BUT the one it has, I do like (3 sizes, in any of the 4 corners)
d. Bright blue LED's I have to cover up.
e. Speakers aren't great, but I tolerate them (fixed with A/V Reciever).
f. Remote codes not standard ones.
g. Remote itself stinks (program a learning one and save original one).
h. Can't remove Channels from the Database once they are scanned.

h is a problem, cause sometimes cable seems to send some peoples On-Demand stuff on various channels. You can see them fast forwarding lol. Sometimes there's even Adult material visible. It would be nice to be able to remove these channels that got picked up accidently while scanning for stable, consistant channel transmissions.


5. What "Feature(s)" you wish your LCD had.

a. Uploadable Firmware Upgrades
b . Side By Side PIP.
c. PIP for more than one HD input sources.
d Better Audio/Speakers internally.

6. What advice or suggestion would you make to the "Manufacturer" about your LCD.

a. Make Firmware interface built in so Upgrading can be done via a PC.
b. Put some extra effort in Audio Design /Speakers (not a concern with a AV Reciever)
c. Can the Remote and package a Good learning remote with the Set.
d. Make it possible to LABEL the Tuners channels, esp OTA HD Channels.

7. What was your biggest "Surprise" after you received your LCD.

Biggest - it's ability to do 1920 x 1200 resolution. I love it. I was also surprised by the size and how light it was and easy to work with, I put it on my old 27" tv's stand and it fit fine.


8. What "Problems or Issues" have you had with your LCD.

All Minor.

a. Remote Died (fixed with Learning remote purchase).
b. Took a while to find the 1920 x 1200 res, I tried 1920 x 1080 but wasn't fitting right.
c. Have to store HUGE box somewhere.
d. Sound from internals doesn't stay at a consistant level. Varies widely from inputs (fixed with A/V Reciever)..

9. Do you really think that todays "Prices" are worth it.

THis unit is more than 2x cheaper than the next model with equivilant functionality from a BIGGER name Manufacturer. There was one other somewhat compatible, but in silver with many noted lock up issues. Plus, the price of this unit has dropped significantly a number of times since it's release. I think it was an awesome price and I was able to watch HD sports THIS season and not have to wait. I think it was an AWESOME price for the time.

I also saved $200.00 - $300.00 because I didn't used the money I would have spent on a seperate monitor for my HTPC.

All in All I am happy seeing as I couldn't Afford to wait for and afford a 46 Sony, and with what I saved, I am really considering getting 2 more for the Kids for Christmas.

I dropped my Cable bill from $70.00 to $12.00 as I just watch major network channels and they come over cable free and the built in tuner picks them up in their HD form. When I DID have the HD Cable box though, all channels looked amazingly better.

My opinion is that 1080p content will be coming via the internet far sooner than we can imagine. ALready some TV Networks are letting shows be downloaded and some Companies are delivering content through pay sites. This set does all I really want it to and looks great from 4 ft to 10 ft. Perfect the typical living rooms my family has.

It's also an awesome monitor, and with a lower resolution, it would be very helpful as a monitor for a family member with some visual impairments.

Good price (versus Sony Bravia XBR2), good performance, perfect size, stylish cabinet design (again, versus XBR2), swivel base, great feedback from other owners.

The cabinet design, it's just stunning. One of the finest looking pieces of electronic equipment I've ever seen.

4. What you don't like about your LCD.
Slightly limited display configuration options and connections.

Backlit remote, extra component input (but I don't need it at the moment), more robust speakers.

6. What advice or suggestion would you make to the "Manufacturer" about your LCD.
Just to try to increase the options. And try to improve the speakers without sacrificing design. But in terms of performance and design, I'm extremely happy.

7. What was your biggest "Surprise" after you received your LCD.
The size when placed in my bedroom. You think, "Oh, a 32" that's not that big". But when actually sitting in front of it, it's a great size. The 40" would have been overkill for my small bedroom.

8. What "Problems or Issues" have you had with your LCD.
None so far!

9. Do you really think that todays "Prices" are worth it.
Yes and no. It's the perfect TV for what I needed and I'm a sucker for the the design style, but that doesn't necessarily justify the price. I wish it was closer to $1,000 and not $1,500 but I did get an open box TV that was perfect, and I got $200 off.

10. Any additional information that you want to add is encouraged.
Do your best to test out your own media and try out different settings at the store if you can. Luckily, I was able to do so before buying, which definitely helped my decision. The one on display at the store I bought mine from didn't look that great in comparison to the XBR2 right next to it, but when trying it out at home, it looks amazing, better than in-store where it looked too dark and had flesh tones that were too red.

Priced $1400 less than a Sony 46XBR2, this TV is better for that difference.

The occasional power luck up when turning it on.

The Lockup issue. But I did my home work and knew that was a possibilty when I bought it.

IMPO, this is the best looking LCD TV on the market today, with a PQ that if not betters, then at least matches, any of the top tier LCD sets on the market.

Awkward / goofy menues.

How nice SD programming was on this set. I mean, I really was expecting it to be lousy from what I have heard about SD on HD Flatpanels, but this JVC does a really nice job with it.

Considering I paid about $800 to $1200 less for this set, than any of the other top tier 46" LCD sets are going for, "my set" was totally worth it ! When other sets come down to the price I paid, they will be totally worth it too.

The Picture Quality. This set produces really good colors and a very sharp image. Also, this is one sexy looking unit!

Well, the base doesn't swivel and the remote is a little lacking.

Swivel base, more than 1 custom setting per input, button on remote to go directly to an input.

How heavy it was, its a good bit heavier than the kdl-40v2500.

Well hey, how long are you going to wait..there's always something new around the corner, either pay today's prices or get yesterday's technology.

If your debating between the xbr2 and the v2500....go with the xbr2!...The color this unit produces is truly amazing, the PQ is very sharp and clear and there is no blur/haze that i noticed w/ the v2500 (i had the v2500 for about 2 weeks before i returned it). 3 HDMI inputs, a 1080vga input, and a boatload of settings. Thanks to Petmic for sharing his calibration settings with the xbr2/3 community (this should be another reason to buy the unit, professional calibration settings are available to you on these forums). I am truly amazed w/ the picture quality.

b) Extensive research on these boards, and in stores comparing plasmas, RPTVs, LCDs, etc. I've seen pretty much all of them and played with most of 'em.
c) A lot of in-store experience with 46XBR2s
d) Many years of prior ownerrship of Sony video products
e) WAF (and she helped subsidize the premium on the XBR3, too)

3. What you like best about your LCD.
- Absolutely outstanding PQ on HD sources. Really good.
- Amazing set of picture controls, almost infinitely-tuneable.
- Exceptional esthetic appeal (I've already received a lot of compliments on the set's apprearance, and the holidays aren't even here yet).
- Form-factor fits the space (could go bigger IMO, though)
- Handles both bright and dim room conditions, no screen glare or reflection issues
- Very familiar control layout and operation
- Superior interconnectivity with all my gear, super-configurable
- Individual memory for picture settings for each input, in each mode!

4. What you don't like about your LCD.
- Well, obviously the price premium...
- Non-swiveling stand
- Black bezel could be a bit narrower

5. What "Feature(s)" you wish your LCD had.
Not in the following order:
- The ability to pass-through digital audio via the TOSLink/optical out, from external sources such as HDMI.
- Sync-on-green capability (don't own an XBox, but the set should support this)
- Ability to accept 1080p-input via Component
- A built-in DVI connector input
- A swiveling stand

6. What advice or suggestion would you make to the "Manufacturer" about your LCD.
- Include all items in #5 above.
- Lower the price so more can enjoy this superb panel in their homes

7. What was your biggest "Surprise" after you received your LCD.
Almost none. This set has totally met my expectations. In fact I would say it has surpassed most of them!
Maybe this is more a pleasant relief than a surprise, but reflections off the gloss-black bezel are a non-issue. They're there, but just disappear once you turn the set on and there is a picture. It's actually a neat effect when I think about it.
I was surprised to have no motion blur or issues with fast-action sports programming, after hearing all the complaints from 46XBR owners...not that I ever saw it on those either, once they were adjusted properly (and fed with a decent signal). I have noticed some of this on other panels, including tweaked Sharp and Sammy 52" sets with comparable signals, BTW.
I was also a bit surprised to find that no HDMI cable was included with the set, but pleasantly surprised to find that a VGA cable WAS provided.

8. What "Problems or Issues" have you had with your LCD.
Hmm. None so far...should I be worried?
OK, I had a problem getting all 120 lbs. of this TV off the floor and up on my salamander unit by myself. I managed to do it without incident or damage, though - I'm a engineer, I make my living doing a lot with too little.

My philosophy is that a thing is worth whatever someone is willling to pay for it. Since I did buy it after all, and it has been perfect so far, I guess I have to say yes. Check back with me in a year or two...

I'm posting in the Owners thread so go there for more info. I will say that in general, I consider this the finest LCD panel on the market today. Tomorrow, who knows? But right now, this thing kicks righteous a**!

except a red ear detector, seems like sources are infinitely variable

improve the banding I can live with the remote

probably the brightness, this is our only tv and I wanted it to be visible in daylight and it certainly is.

banding. looking to see if it is cured by another manufacturer, still in the 30day grace period

tough to justify so much for a tv, except when you look at the $720 per annum for programming, so it's comparable to 3 years of programming (ext warr. plus tax), probably worth it.

IMHO it's staggering how bad, stores make their tv's look I am surprised anyone buys one.
This tv was rated good SD by some, I would hate to see bad.

Built in tuner, replaced 13 analog set mounted in kitchen wall (Sharp fit in existing hole perfectly)

For my particular application this set is ideal. Picture quality is excellent.

4. What you don't like about your LCD.
Remote could be better. Plus side: multiple favorite channel preset buttons / negative: no dedicated guide button

Built in DVD player.

Indicate clearly on the box that the unit has built in ATSC tuner. That fact is only listed on the spec' sheet, on the last page of the owner's manual.

Great picture in a very brightly lit kitchen. Unpacked unit at my office, hooked up a set of $3.00 rabbit ears from Big Lots and unit scanned and found every digital and analog station in my area. Unit scans quickly.

None.

Prices are still on the high side but good deals can be found if you are patient and do your homework.

Hard to find 20 or smaller with built-in tuner. I only have an OTA feed throughout my house and tuner makes installation a snap. Nice looking, light (12 pounds) unit for bedroom/kitchen/bathroom application.

Great price.

A 32" LCD with a CableCard slot.

4. What you don't like about your LCD.

Need to reprogram software with a service call. Toshiba needs to make TV's software updates possible by the consumer via a USB port or a SD FlashCard reader.

Picture on Picture HDTV feature.

Don't go with cheap LCD panel providers in your newer units trying to reach production levels. Keep toshiba 100% toshiba with the quality of the build. Don't lower your standards.

7. What was your biggest "Surprise" after you received your LCD.
How amazing HDTV looks over a Terk antenna for OTA broadcasts... Stunning! How 3D looking some of Discovery's broadcast looks over CableCard.


8. What "Problems or Issues" have you had with your LCD.

Drops channel lineup from time to time. Getting newer upgrades on software/firmware version while having to wait for a TV techinician.

When a basic Toshiba 32" ASTC and NSTC tuner lcd TV goes for $500 US, yes. $600 with cable card descrambler feature.

Due to space constraints, I narrowed down my choice to the Panny 37" plasma or the Mitsu 37" LCD. Because of the distance from my sofa (5-6 ft), I thought the 1080p Mitsu had the better picture, and it was not that much more that the Panny, which is 720p, so I'm ready for Blu-ray (or HD-DVD, whatever).

It seemed to get very good reviews, and I didn't find mention of any problems worth noting.

Extremely good quality on bright HD material

Black level could be better, and there is some crushing.

Dual tuners and PiP would be nice, but really I probably wouldn't use it much.

Put extra HDMI ports on, that's what most people complain about, though I don't really need them personally.

It was larger than I'd thought and lighter.

No issues, aside from the aforementioned blacklevel/crush. This isn't a problem, but inherent in the technology though.

Hard to say. There aren't any clearly superior alternatives, so by the logic that if there isn't anything better that's cheaper, then yes.

I'm badly torn whether to return the display and get a plasma (Pioneer 427XA) but I'm very concerned about burn-in, which is why the display isn't on it's way back. The Plasma's should have improved black levels and black detailing over the LCD, but I risk issues with burn-in, since I mostly view content that will show black bars and games with HUDs. Very little broadcast material.
Also, the idea of being able to hook up a PC and use it as a display is nice, though it's not something I use currently. (I use my Xbox360 as an MCE extender).

Built-in HDTV tuner; PQ; Great size for bedroom!, 35 lbs VS 98 lbs for CRT!

Manual on CD, not hard copy; limited sound out /in options.

Sharp AQUOS 42D62U 42" 1080p LCD HDTV

2. What convinced you to purchase this particular model.
1080p combined with good enough picture quality in LCDs and a 'reasonable' price put me in the market for a TV. I ended up choosing between the Samsung 40", the Sony 40" and the Sharp 42". All looked BRILLIANT with a 1080p signal. For the other kinds of signals I prefered the softer, less 'edgy' image on the Sharp. Also the lack of 1:1 pixel mode was a huge minus for the Samsung even regardless of PQ, and I just liked the glossy black cabinet better than the Sony's silver and glass.

3. What you like best about your LCD.
Fantastic picture! Really, I now have a home theater. The MacMini as "couch capable PC" over HDMI is also lovely!

4. What you don't like about your LCD.
Menus are slow to respond to and poorly organized. Some image settings are under picture > advanced and some are in setup.

The world's ugliest and ungainliest remote. I *will* be getting a universal remote! :-)

The manual is very short and does a terrible job of explaining how the features work.

Easier image tweaking per input.

Make nice transparent menus like the Samsung. Seriously, the UI on the Samsung is a work of art! I almost thought about buying one just because of those menus!

How huge it looked at home!

Also how annoying it was that the image setting seems to keep tweaking itself based on the video "mode" - I thought it was just an image processing setting, but actually it's also changing picture settings. Although some of my confusion may also be related to the different setting per input. As you can tell I have not yet gotten my AVIVA disc so I'm waiting to do a full calibration.

I have confirmed I do NOT suffer from the banding, bleeding or poor viewing angle problems that have been reported with this model line.

I was very unhappy while making the choice. It's a lot of money so you want something good. Don't overthink it. Buy what you want and just be sure you have a good exchange and return policy. I would have been much happier buying a week earlier and returning a tv than over researching! :-)

Amazing picture quality/ fidelity, especially with good source material

The remote controller is a letdown, but my universal remote controller solved the problem of dealing with the original unit

Right now the Westy only has "Standard" and "Fill" picture modes. One feature I really wish for is "Zoom" picture mode, and preferably it would have 2 or 3 zooming steps. "Zoom" would allow me to watch those letterbox broadcasts without the horizontal stretch one gets with "Fill" mode.

6. What advice or suggestion would you make to the "Manufacturer" about your LCD.
Replace the remote controller with something better. Include an A/V, Component, or HDMI cable. Not finding ANY type of video cable gave me the impression of Westinghouse digital being unusually stingy.

7. What was your biggest "Surprise" after you received your LCD.
The PC desktop is stunningly beautiful at 1920 x 1080p. I am able to read text from 8 feet away. And I can hardly see the pixel grid from about 2 ft away. Compared with other 1366 x 768 panels I saw, I was able to discern their pixel grids more easily and at a greater distance. Their images would seem less detailed and more pixelized...

8. What "Problems or Issues" have you had with your LCD.
No glaring problems, aside from a faint banding line that runs vertically down the center of the screen. Only visible on blank grey screens.

I think so, I walked into the BB store not really dead-set to buy a flat panel, but the price was too good to pass up, not to mention I got them to toss in the free DVD recorder offer they had on their online store...

I think LCDs have come a long way in the last 2 years, and I expect them to get even better. This set rekindled my love for HT, the same as when I started with this hobby/obsession 16 years ago... When you turn the TV on, there should be another setting other that "Vivid", and "Standard". Maybe it should be called "Calibrated", because it eliminates the black crush phenomenon.
