Official MK - Miller & Kreisel Thread?!?

I have searched and searched and can't find an official discussion thread on MK?!?

If I am wrong please delete this and point me in the right direction...or if I am not suppose to do this as one of the 'rules' of the forum.

If there isn't one...then lets make this it!

I have been a fan of MK for 11 years when I first started selling them back in college (among many other brands including B&W and Monitor).

Well I am removed enough from college now and can afford to my dream home theater speakers...MK S-150 THX Ultra up front and SW 50's inwall's for the rear.

They will be delivered tomorrow and I wanted to see if there are others out there that have these and/or other MK products and want to chime in with set up recommendations.

Please limit this thread to discussion of MK products and leave the price discussion between you and your retailer of choice.

Cheers!

I have been using the M&K S150THX fronts with SS150THX surrounds for about 3 years, and think they are an excellent home theater speaker. I have a separate system for listening to music though, and would not recommend these to someone who is looking for a dual purpose speaker for critical music listening as well.

I think they make some of the best subwoofers on the market for the b&m brands.

^agreed on both counts...mine will be used for 90% HT. The main reason we sold their line was their subs...bar none my favorite sub company.

I will be swapping out my B&W ASW 1000 (the last one I had when I worked in hi-fi) for an MK next spring.

What sub are you running? Do you have your 150's mounted on the wall or on stands?

Where are the M&K's lacking for music? Too analytical and cold? Not enough warmth and involving? I hear it said often, but never with any comment that would qualify such a statement.

Kind of dry sounding would be my comment.

S-150s, SS-150s, S-85s.

Never been a fan of their subwoofers though. They're all boom and no bass IMO.

I have always been a fan...What sub are you running?

What electronics is everyone running?

I will be buying both in the spring.

By conventional widom/terminology, I would think most would say you've got your descriptives reversed. Most would say M&K's have nice, tight bass, but lack boom, or sub-20hz extension.

I power my 3 S150's with a Bryston 6BSST, and I power my 4 SS150's with a pair of Bryston 4BSST's. The 2 MX350's are controlled by a Velodyne SMS-1. My prepro is an Anthem Statement D2, and I use a Pioneer Elite 79AVi DVD/SACD/DVD-A, a Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD, and Comcast HD as sources.

My wife just called me my MK's and TV were just delivered!!! I think I may take the afternoon off from work to go set everything up!!

Thanks for the reply Monty that is a killer set up. I see you live in Park Ridge. I am just south of you in Westchester.

I am thinking of Rotel or Parasound Pre and Amp but I have not began much of search yet. I have several friend in the hi-fi business so what kind of deals that are out there might help me in my decision too. I am waiting for more HDMI switching options to come out before I buy my preamp so I will likely do the sub first...I have a about a 10 year old Marantz receiver that will work for now but will definately be underserving the main's.

Paradigm Servo-15, Velodyne HGS and DD line, and even SVS are much better subwoofers to use with M&K satellites, IME. I've had MX-70B, MX-350 MkII and couldn't get on with them at all. I've also heard the 1250THX on many occassions.
I have LCR 150 in the front and ss-150 in the rear. Running then with Anthem 30 and MCA 5. I could not be happier with the sound side of my HT.

I have a MX-350 sub. I just add a SVS- pb12+/2 and to be honest it is awesome. I am running both subs together. I did a basic calibration but need to research more on calibrating two subs. THe SVS is a nice fit with the 150s.

M&K is probably the only piece of my home theater were I do not get the urge to upgrade. I like to look around alot of the high end HT stores in the Bay Area. It is funny when I hear a very expensives system that sounds flat compaired to my M&Ks.

I am a pretty loyal owner and hope that M&K stays afloat.

Ok so I finally got to the stage to mount my speakers last night...

I am going to hang the SW150's above my TV. I have room to put the L/R on either side of the TV but it would block my A/V rack then. Which stinks because I had room to move the A/V rack over further at the time of framing.

So I have two of the fixed mount brackets but I can not find a third!!! So I called MK and asked what they recommend since they quit making brackets.

They recommended a certain Omni mount. I ordered it and its a goliath in comparision to the MK! What's worse is it only lines up with one of the holes on the back of the speaker! I do would like to use at least 2 holes.

The Omni mount is cast so drilling through that would take a bigger drill press than I have.

Does anyone have an extra wall bracket for an SW-150 or know where to find one or something else that will work?

Thanks guys!

On another note I just ran the L/R and rear's last night to watch TV until I hook up the sub and center and it sounded great! I love my MK's!!!

750-T THX Towers - L/R
750 C MKII THX - Center Channel
CS 22 Column Surrounds
VX-1250SFX THX Subwoofer

driven by a Marantz 8001

I'm hoping the PRO drivers in the 750 Towers will make them musical enough to use for audio only.

Anyone using their Bass Management Controllers?

I am the proud owner of a V-76 Sub - down to 16hz we go!

Hi everyone.

I'm new here and I hope I can get some input in my questions about M&K speakers. Read as much as I can about the M&K K-series but I have some questions.

I'm interested in buying 3 K-7's and a pair of K-4's. And I was thinking to add a M&K sub as the VX-1250 SFX or VX-860 with the "new" 250 W amp to the system. However I have read some not bad, but lets say not very positive stuff about these products, specially the cheaper M&K subs as the ones mentioned above.

Am I totaly off with these speakers, which a have listened to and liked, have not listened to the sub though? Is there better options in that price range? And should I look for other subwoofers (I can spend around 1000 USD on a sub).

My HT is located in a small room (6*5 meters) and I absolutely prefer listening to quality and accurate stuff, rather then high levels of SPL and mega-bass. Of course I want quality deep bass, but not to sound quality expence if you know that I mean.

Size is important as far as the main speakers are concerned, but the sub does not have to be super small.

Please give me your input, Am I one the right track? I have to excuse my poor english (from a country in europe...)

Thanks in advance.

M&K is a great company that revolutionized the speaker industry by inventing the sat/sub configuration. I used to sell M&k products and currently have a V76 sealed 12" sub which goes down to 16hz with a very punchy and tight (non-boomy) sound. Model 1250 THX is also quite amazing. I'm not so sure about the new model designations. The downside is you have to buy right as the entire product line is a bit pricey. However, the resale value is very good when it is time to trade up.

Thanks for the post ace.

No one else who has experience of the K-series, or have something to say about them, or the lower budget M&K speakers I'm looking in to? Or have some other sugestions of speaker packeges in the sub 2500 USD range?

Here in Sweden it's hard to find dealers who can demenstrate M&K's speakers so if you have anything to say I would be glad to here it.

Thanks.

Chuck -

I have a pair of the K-5's along with an MX-70B sub and have been very happy with the performance both on movies & music. My room is fairly large (16 x 28 feet) but I can still get very reasonable output levels. In a smaller room the K-7's should be great. I chose the 5's because I needed something as small as possible to be unobtrusive and keep the wife happy - the 5's fit the bill and still give me the sound I wanted.

I have 750 thx up front and surround 55 tripoles in the rear. Anyone know if there are any good mounts for the 55's?
The K series are well made, dynamic speakers. I had them for a short time, but found them too bright for my ears. See if you can hear them somewhere for yourself. Good luck.
I have 5 LCR750MKII's running off of a Denon 3806 and a Definitive Supercube I or a Martin Logan Grotto sub. (Not sure which one I like better, but I own both :-) )

Well I was first inroduced to them when I lived in Northern Cal from a customer who work at "the Ranch"...George Lucas Skywalker Ranch that is. They have them all over the place and this gentleman suggestion I try there subs, as I was looking for one.I got the 150 model and have really enjoyed it. I hace a 7.1 setup in my ded HT with B&W 700 series.Whoever said these subs are boomy doesnt translate to my experience. That bass is tighter then a nuns-----!Well, you get the picture.Fishman
post #27 of 3475
I have had s-85 fronts for a few years and SS150 THX rears.

They are awesome and I feel that I have never needed an upgrade. I had an M&K sub and I liked them lots. I now have a Velodyne DD 15 THX Ultra sub though

The UK distributor is well known for high prices and discounting is extremely forbidden (which is supposed to be illegal). The equivalent dollar price per speaker is simply change to a pound sign which is a doubling of the price in the blink of an eye.

There are alot of unhappy M&K dealers in the UK

I just asked this question on the receiver forum. "What receiver for 4 ohm M&K speakers." I didn't realize there was an M&K thread here. I want something that can drive them and make them sound great without the receiver straining/dying. My old receiver a Yamaha rx-530 did alright but my HK AVR75 made them sound amazing. However the receiver keeps shutting down, sometimes randomly and now when I turn up the speakers for a movie. I don't know if it's a 4 ohm issue or just the usual HK suckiness. I'm looking for something new or used, hopefully under $1000.

Is anyone running the MK THX S-150P Active System?

You might just consider adding a used power amp - probably better than any receiver option. Even a 2 or 3 channel one for the fronts would help out.
