Vivo, have you tried Blu-Ray or HDDVD on the Mits?
Unfortunately I don't have either right now. I'll try to grab some 1080p WMV or HD264 clips and play them through DVI from my computer. See how that looks. That is when I can get my son off of the TV(Halo 2 on 360)
I purchased the mitsu 46" to replace an ancient set. I had inspected the set and all seemed well. I am a a tv novice however. I plugged the set in to a very high quality powerstrip with a few other low drain devices. 45 seconds after the set powered up and began to program channels, there was a pop and mu new set became a paperweight with the aroma of burned electronics. the powerstrip was not tripped nor were other devices affected. Did I screw up or need somthing else? I was assured my setup was adequate. Did I need a conditioner or something else? Thanks for the help.
You didn't do anything wrong you just got a bad set and need to return it. It shouldn't of done that even if it was plugged into the wall. The only time that could remotely happen is if there was a power surge. What was the build date?
and where did you get it at?
Hadron, do you have a link for the 10%off ? and what is AAA?
I looked at slickdeals and didn't see it.
thanks
I assume that he was referring to the Automobile Association of America. I found their 10% Circuit City deal here, but it looks as though you do have to be a member.
Does anyone have a Series 2 TiVo hooked up to your Mitsu using Component cable? For some reasons, I cannot view any close caption on the video played through the component input.
Well.. I bought the TV yesterday.. Have mixed feelings now that it's home. Love the versatility, the colors are good.. but the Black level(especially when room is dark) isn't impressing me. DVI from computer looks fantastic, hdmi from cable box is pretty good as well but the 1080i from the 360 isn't crisp. Not bad, but text is a little fuzzy.. I tried 1080i from computer and could see serious issues with text.. looked like the TV was just doubling lines here and there(while randomly removing others!) to get the overscan.. text was also a bit fuzzy.. like not fully converged. Will keep it for a bit longer and see if I can live with it. Otherwise I may try a 4661F.. For the love of BLACK....
As with most (all?) LCDs, black levels are one of the weak points of this TV. But do try turning Contrast all the way up and Backlight down to maybe 5 - 10. Also be sure to turn Sharpness down to zero. And where did you try 1080i from computer? I think only DVI is recommended for computer, and you really should use 1080p instead of 1080i.

If you read the fine print it says "Not valid on previous purchases." I guess you would have to return and re-purchase.
October 2006 was the build date. I got it at Circuit City due to price. I am going to see today waht can do about it as I cannot find that set at that price anywhere else with the coupon and their sale price. Thanks for the feedback and reassurance.

I don't think the 4661 is worth $1000 more, at current prices. I thought about the 4661F , but after all the HDMI drop-out issues, and the screaming deal on the Mits, it was a no-brainer.

Thanks,
It's definitely a balancing act.. I have the Backlight turned down, but that is offset a bit by having to keep brightness in upper 20's to keep the blacks from getting crushed. Even with backlight all the way down and brightness all the way down, there's still a significant amount of light leaking through on all black backgrounds. Looks good in Daylight conditions, but very noticable in darkened room.
I've also noticed that using color temp "High" I had to turn the green down(in perfect color) to between 20-25 to keep the vegitation from glowing unaturally. Really came clear on DVI from PC. Put up a picture with a Crayon box, and one brighter green stripe on the box looked absolutely Neon.
I have HD component out from my Graphics care I used with my old set(no HDMI and DVI was being used for cable box). I thought my graphics card had two DVI outputs, but not the case, one VGA. Will have to use VGA for my 19" flat panel and DVI for the Mits. 1080p from computer on DVI is stunning! May be losing a pixel or two on the edge, but that's it. Looks like perfect 1:1 map. That being said, the 1080i on component was not that good. It deinteraces well, but the image isn't sharp. I think the component inputs are the weakest part of this set. Also wish at least one of the component inputs had S/Pdif inputs for sound!!!
I spent 2 years tweaking(Service Menu) my old Zenith CRT and it looked VERY realistic(and great BLACKS!) by the end. Of course even though it was a 1080i set, it never resolved more than 720p at best. Very noticable increase in Resolution with the Mits. Also the Mits does a stellar job of deinterlacing 1080i Sporting events. My old set looked like it was 540p when they panned across the Basketball court on CBS or TNT's coverage.. The Mits is stellar in this regard.. no shimmering lines.. or stairsteps along edge of court during panning shots. Looked fantastic watching Pistons and Wings this weekend.
Right now I'm battling slighty orangish flesh tones on the Mits. Will Go back and try again from scratch tonight. The settings I saw above weren't bad, but I thought a little too warm. May go back to them and see if I can tweak from there to my liking.
Is it just me, or does Perfect Color not seem to cover the whole color spectrum? Like an equalizer that doesn't overlap. On my old set flesh tones were sensitive to blue(cyan?) gain, but on this set, almost not at all.
Is there any way to access the service menu on this set? Sorry if that's posted somewhere and I missed it.
Because my cable box didn't have HDMI(old DVI box) I tried the 1394 input.. as well as DVI to HDMI(but no surround sound) I can say that you can control the box from the TV and that you can get a great picture through that link. Unfortunately if you try using rewind function you can end up with display corruption that doesn't clear till you reselect the input. I also had issue with audio breaking up last night, but seemed fine this mornin. Picked up one of the newer 6416 boxes today so I'll see how HDMI looks. May have them come out and put in a cable card($12 install). Is that worth it?

The sales guy I talked to at CC put the real differential at around $300-350.. which makes it a tougher choice. I like the face tones and blacks better on the Samsung. Although the sound drop-outs on HDMI would probably drive me nuts..
Champagne taste on a beer budget.. LOL That's what the builder told me years ago.

Going out to the CC web site, the price difference is $600 right now.. you can get 10% off either one, but it's still a $600 difference. The 4661 has it's own issues, so I guess it comes down to witch issue you want to live with, and if you're willing to pay $600 more.
Saw some discussion further up this thread about which sources you can use for the side-by-side or picture-in-picture...can HDMI-1 and antenna be used? What about HDMI-1 and DVI? Cablecard and HDMI?

In what sense? Do you want or neeed to be able to tune digital and premium cable channels without a box? If you're going to have a two-tuner leased DVR, the only advantage would be that you could watch a third program on a digital subscription channel in realtime while recording two others.
I just bought the Mits LT46131 on Friday at CC for the unreal low price they were advertising online... takes the place of my relic - Toshiba 46H83 rear-projection.
I'm satisfied with my purchase at this point, but I'm a little frustrated in trying to find the right color settings. For instance, I was watching the Suns game yesterday, and it seems that the orange didn't really stand out on the jerseys, and the purple was a little too close to navy blue.
I don't really want to mess with the settings without the advice of the experts here.
I'm running from a DirecTV HD box to the monitor through an HDMI connection...
Any advice on the best color scheme and picture settings?

At the bottom of PDF page 55 of this owner's guide, there's a table showing the possible combinations. You can show almost anything except Cable-1 and Cable-2 simultaneously, probably because there's only a single set of embedded tuners. Apparently you can't show two HDMI inputs side-by-side either and there are some format limitations of 1080p HDMI and DVI.
Any advice on the best color scheme and picture settings?
Various sets of picture settings have been suggested in this thread since it began--do a thread search for "settings adjustments" (without the quotes) and you'll find some of them. (There's a little control marked "Search this thread" on the bar above the first post on the page).

I think the main differences are that the LT-46231 has TV Guide On Screen (which I assume will be worthless after analog shutdown) and Mitsubishi NetCommand. I bought the LT-46131 because 1) the 46231 wasn't available locally and 2) I didn't think it was worth the price difference just to get NetCommand. I haven't seriously regretted that decision because the 46131 does have the ability to control Firewire devices. (I guess you could say it has NetCommand Lite.) Still, for only $300-350 more I might seriously consider the 46231 to get the full version of NetCommand.
When comparing the Mitsubishi's black levels with the Samsung or any other LCD, be sure that both sets are adjusted properly to give a good gray scale. Sometimes LCD sets with good looking blacks are getting them by crushing black levels severely. If a set has good blacks and good shadow detail, that's impressive.

I don't think that's a good assumption--TVGOS has been present as a digital datacast in all major markets since some time in 2005. I'd be surprised if any recent model television with NTSC and ATSC tuners which incorporates TVGOS couldn't pick up both the ATSC subchannel datacast and analog VBI forms.
Greetings! I just picked up the 46131 yesterday (May 5th) from Circuit City they had it on-sale for $1999. I absolutely love it. My buddy came over with this 360 and PS3 and we played several games on the 360 with 1080i and it looked amazing. The game play and picture was smooth and vibrant. Played a few games on PS3 as well at both 720p and 1080p and that too had absolutely no problems with incredible detail. Not once did i notice any lag issues or response issues. I have watched regular tv on it and the SD is ok will be getting a PS3 soon also so I can watch blu-ray movies at 1080p and gaming.
My apprehension was that Mitsubishi had not published the refresh rates and thus I was leaning more towards Samsung. But after having played games on both 360 and ps3 for almost the entire day that apprehension is behind me.
I have not had a chance to watch any movies yet nor have I had the opportunity to hook it up to my PC. I will post updates as I test other devices with this TV. So far I am very happy. Oh yeah CC will try very hard to sell you the $590 extended warranty and cables and stand and all that crap just ignore them. You can buy extended warranty from Mitsubishi electronics once the 1 year is up.

You can do any combination of different inputs.. there is only one DVI/HDMI reciever circuit for the 3 inputs, there is only one component circuit and one Antenna circuit. Firewire blanked out some inputs but can't remember which. Think antenna because the MPEG2 decoder is being used by firewire and not available for the Antenna. As long as you don't want two of the same input type, you're good to go.

My question here is wether the native decoding and scaling(in the TV) is better or worse than getting the picture HDMI(for example, with ESPN the DVR converts 720p up to 1080i for HDMI then sent to TV where it's converted to 1080p.
If I have a cable card, wouldn't it look better scaling directly from 720p to 1080p in the TV?
How good is the Mits MPEG2 decoder and scalar compared to the one in the 6416 cable box?
I guess I could evaluate this myself comparing OTA image quality vs same channel through the DVR
We bought the LT-46131 from CC last Sat. and it's being delivered today. We also got the Monster Power "Home Theatre PowerCenter" that has 1850 Joule surge protection. We live in southern California so we rarely get lightening storms. Is this adequate protection?
That's not true--according to the manual you can do split screen of any two different component inputs. It says this explicitly in a footnote about component/component split-screen: "** Only when main picture and sub-picture are from different COMPONENT jacks".

I don't know about the its MPEG decoder, but I'd judge the Mits ability to scale as being comparable to my OPPO 981-HD's.

I stand corrected on component..
I will run some tests comparing the Unscrambled HD channels I pick up MIts's QAM tuner against the same channel from the cable box usingHDMI. See if they differ in quality or overscan.
It seemingly took FOREVER for the TV to search for Digital Channels, and then it doesn't really give you any clue what's what when you're done.. about all you know is that if you see dozens of subchannels they are all music only. I'll have to figure out if I can label the Channels that actually have video.. once I figure out which ones they are!
I agree with you on the scalar.. I was using the 1394 feed from 720p source(ESPN) on the DVR and it looked razor sharp scaled by the Mits up to 1080p.. which also says the Mit's MPEG2 decoder was pretty good now that I think about it. I was getting occasional dropouts on the 1394 connection though.. I wouldn' t want to use that connection all the time. For comparison it's interesting, but doesn't seem as reliable.
