Toshiba Gigabeat S 30gb

Thread Starter
Hello,
Does anyone out ther own the new Toshiba Gigabeat S 30gb or 60gb? I would like to get one but it seems that it has no "audio line out" like the Ipods or Creative Zen... Noone carries it around town so I cannot look at one in person.
Thank you.

I have the s60. As far as audio line out you just use the standard 1/4 jack to output audio. The toshiba comes with the 1/4 jack to RCA yellow/red/white adapter for video playback with sound or just audio playback.

but can you switch it to a fixed line out mode? Or is it just a variable volume line out. reason is if you're going to go to an external amp or reciever, a fixed line out mode is cleaner.

To be honest I am note sure. I will need to check the instructions. It does have a dock connection at the bottom, but I am yet to see any gigabeat accessories that utilize it. I personally have connected using the variable out and it sounds great.

coupla questions:

have you played a lossless wma on it?

Syncing with WMP, does the album art go over automatically? (this didn't on the previous f60 series)

I anticipate that line out is available via the dock slot (similar to thw way Ipods do it) if a custom cable were made.

Are you a fellow Cintiq21 user?

Album art does go over automatically. Although I have had some trouble with some art not transferring. I have not played lossless on it yet.

It seems that Toshiba does not have many accessories for the s series. I believe they have kind of abandoned it because of them manufacturing the Zune, we'll see though. It is a relatively new device and of course doesn't get the marketing and hype of ipod and the zune.

I actually have never heard of Cintiq21 and had to look it up. Just a coincidence I guess.

If you get a chance, I would love to hear if you could test a lossless wma file.

-edit:
also when you load the lossless file on the player, see if it converts it before it copies it over.

I have a Creative Zen PMC and if you enable the TV out it resets when it powers off, so you need to set it each time. Could you try that on the Toshiba and see if it maintains the TV out between power offs?

Thanks,

Sorry not sure if there is a thread for the 30gb so I will ask the question here.

I just got my player but my PC does not recognize it?? I have tried a lot of different things from uninstalling wmp11 to rolling back etc etc.

When I connect my player to the PC I get the "wizard" pop up asking me to "insert the installation CD" or let it find it on its own.

I install the CD and it searches then gives me the following error message:

"An error occurred installing a service installation of the device section in this .inf is invalid" ????

Also, why does Toshiba tell us to install wmp10 even though we have wmp11 which is difficult to uninstall? Bizarre.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated and hope you guys are much more friendly then DIGITAL HOME CANADA forums which are ruled with an iron fist.

Thanks

Reboot and then reconnect the Gigabeat again. I just got a new computer and had the same issue happen. The reconnect worked for me.

Can the Toshiba Gigabeat operate on its a/c power cord, or only from the charged battery? I see the battery life on videos is like 2-3 hours. So could you plug in the a/c and continue to watch when the battery dies?

Hello out there. I just purchased the 30gb but I am a little concerned. The package says works with Windows XP only, does this mean that VISTA won't work. I cannot verify since I do not have a VISTA machine. Has anyone tried this yet? Also, how can I view the firmware version of the unit?

Thanks...

I just sent a post asking about Windows VISTA working with the gigabeat 30gb, is your new machine an XP or VISTA. My concern is that my new gigabeat package says "works with XP only". Please advise.

Thank you.

I have the S60. I am using XP with WMP11, the recommended media player to use for sycing. I know that Vista is setup to easily connect cameras and MP3 players. And WMP11 is the stock player on Vista. I am sure that the S30 & S60 will work quite nicely.

As for the packaging listing only XP compatibility...The S30 and S60 were released about a year ago when Vista had yet to be finalized. The packaging has probably never been updated.

Yes it can operate while on the AC charger. In fact, I am using a cigarette lighter adaptor in the car and it works perfectly...both playing and charging. It will not play, however, while charging via the USB connection.

Also, while there is no line-out, the headphone out sounds damn good. I use it directly in to my Acura's sound system...and I have used it to provide music for house parties thru a kick-ass stereo and it has always sounded great.

Thanks. That's very good news. I figured that VISTA would be backward compatible to legacy type devices but it's nice to have a second opinion. I'm waiting for my new VISTA Dell machine to arrive; stay tuned...

I have the S60 and have sync'd it with XP with WMP 10, XP with WMP 11, and with Vista, they all work fine.

If you have album art that doesn't appear on your PMC, the problem is likely that the art image on your computer is too large. I found that any art larger than I think 200x200 as stored on the computer wouldn't show on the S60. If you go into your file folders, enable options to show hidden files & system files so that you can see your album art files, and resize the pictures slightly smaller (I used the Windows Powertoy Image resizer), they should transfer over a-ok.

There is no dedicated line out. As others have mentioned, was probably originally intended to be via the dock connector, which was never utilized what with the PMC format being abandoned in favor of the Zune. Only option is a mini-plug AV cable to RCA cable adapter from the variable headphone/video out connector. I have a hookup in my car to my head unit and have to crank the volume on the S60 up to it's max "20" level, and still have to turn the volume up on my head unit higher than other sources in order to get adequate amplification, at which point the sound quality is acceptable, however by no means ideal.

Really wish the format would've lived longer, I'm a devoted MCE fan with 3 media center PC's, 2 2005 and 1 Vista and the syncing of recorded TV shows & other media is ideal. Maybe if the Zune ever better supports DVR-MS transcoding I'll make the switch, but all in all, I do like my S60, a wonderful device, just wish it had a longer lifespan with more extensive peripheral support.

Do anyone know of a way I can reformat my S60 back to Fat32?
