TViX M5000 Help

Thread Starter
Just got a M5000. AV connectivity all working, I can playback media from internal hard disk via DVI->HDMI to my LCD TV and via optical digital to my Pioneer home cinema amp.

But I can't access media on the network at all.

I have a linksys router with wired and wireless connection. The TViX is connected via CAT5 to port 2, the main PC with all my media on it is connected via CAT5 to port 1.

The main PC has 3 hard disks in it, C (boot) D (which I use for documents and work) and a third 250GB drive reserved for media which is assigned the letter V.

The V Drive is shared, and I followed instructions in TVIX manual to create a directory called tvixhd1, inside that I have four folders, Music, Pictures, Videos and DVDs. I have checked the IP address of the PC, and disabled all firewalls. I have also followed the TVIX manual about setting up a GUEST account and giving it access.

At the TViX I have entered the IP address, but it refuses to find the tvixhd1 "drive".

.. but nothing has worked.

I have been looking on forums for help and found stuff about Netshare, NAS and SAMBA, all terms I am afraid I don't undertstand, and I am bit a lost.

My previous media player was a Linksys WMA11, although it only plays audio and pics, no video, it was plug and play and used wireless connection. It came with a set-up wizard for the host PC, and took all of 10 minutes to get going.

Hours of messing around with the TViX have got me nowherer, at the moment I am putting it down to a complete waste of money.

Do you need to be a complete computer networking expert to get this running.

Has anyone got step by step instructions for getting this going.

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. Can't get it to see my NAS either or network. Followed instructions I found, still no luck.

Would love to a way to get this to work.

Thanks.

it can be confusing because there are different places in tvix that show ip addresses and they should be different numbers. one is the ip address of the tvix and another is the ip addresses of the "servers"(the devices that have the drives with your files) and the third is the ip address of the DNS server(the linksys router).

network setup also is a little different with each recent version of the firmware because dvico has been working on expanding the options regarding naming the shares etc.

basically, if you set the router to DHCP and the tvix IP setting to DHCP the router will assign ip addresses to the tvix and computer(servers).

the line in the tvix network setup that reads "Network Disk 1:" is where you want to enter the ip address of the computer, where it says Server IP.

first highlight "Network Disk 1:" cursor over to the right and down to "Normal(NFS)" and hit the ok button, that will bring up the window to enter your "Server Name"(tvixhd1 or anything you want in the latest firmware) and the ip address of the "Server IP" (computer ip address). once you have that info entered, press "ok".

you can check the ip address of the tvix in the "TVIX Network Info" line. this ip address is not the same as the one you just entered for the "server". tvix will get this info from the router if you use DHCP, that' s why DHCP is easier to set-up.

if you want to use static settings for the ip addresses then you have to enter all that info in a pop-up window that appears after you select "Static" instead of "DHCP" in the top line of the tvix set up screen. that info will also have to be entered into your router manually.

the easiest way to share the media on your computer is to use the NetShare program. just leave you router and computer and tvix connected as they are. install NetShare on the computer and pick the directory that you want to access on the computer. you can use any directory except the root directory and you can set up subdirectories that will be visable on the tvix.

you get to the NetShare directories by using the "repeat"(jump)button and then the arrow button to get to the network icon in the tvix main splash screen.

hope this helps enough to get you hooked up.

Ok-heres a really dumb question. Did you enter the ip address of the pc you want to share from in the tvix setup screen and select either SMB or NFS as the protocol? Remember, if your networ uses dynamic ip addressing, then your ip address can/will change (from boot up to next boot up).

Make sure you are using 1.8.x or above firmware and make sure the ethernet connection is plugged in (and you didnt use a crossover cable). If you accidentally used a crossover cable it will never work as the wires are connected differently inside. Try another ethernet cable. (A crossover cable is for connecting 2 computers directly)

Finally-make sure the linksys is not blocking the tvix.

I suggest using the NFS(NetShare) client software from Tvix as it performs better for high bitrate HD material. Follow the instructions from tvix (pdf file)

Does your tvix get assigned an ip address from your modem/switch/router? If so, what is the ip address? Make sure you do not have any other devices using the same ip address.

Yes, networking prob's can be a real PITA.

MAKE SURE YOUVE SELECTED THE NETWORK SHARE AT THE TOP OF THE TVIX MENU.(See the attached image)

OK,

Thanks for your help.

I am working now (the day job), but this evening will try the following (in order).

1. Check the firmware of the unit, and update if necessary.
2. Check the Ethernet cable and try an alternative cable.
3. Check settings as per suggestions here.
4. Install Netshare and try that.

For your info, to all the members who responded - BIG THANKS!. some comment.

Yes, I have placed the cursor of the TViX on the Yellow "networked drive" Icon.
Yes, I have checked the IP address of the Network Drive set in the TviX matches the IP address of my PC.

In the setup screen of the unit, it says in top corner Rev 1.3.6... I think this is very old software, yet the unit is brand new, just delivered.

On that screen there is a field for Network Disk that just shows network disk is set to \\\ vixhd1, and IP address (of my PC). there is a field for Network Info, but when I put the curson and this and press ENTER, nothing comes up.

But my problem is this... I would never have purchased this unit had I known I was going to have to spend all this time on it, the Linksys media player I have had for 3 years, came with a set-up wizard that took 2 minutes to get going, and that included settings for WiFi WEP encryption. I don't believe it is acceptable to sell this unit to the general public without such a plug and play set-up.

I am reasonably computer literate, in fact I frequently help friends with their computer problems in terms of fitting upgrades, installing drivers, getting things working etc... and at home I have a network of 5 PCs some using wireless some wired to my linksys router, and considering that level of knowledge would generally be considered beyond average, I am really struggling with understanding all this, and rather resent how highly recommended this unit comes (especially from another rival forum which is foreever raving about it) .. yet what a PITA it is to get going, IT NEEDN'T BE, as my linksys shows.

Again thanks, keep the help coming, and please forgive my rant!

update the firmware first.

Thank You Thank You Thank You AVS Forum, especially KAXKID.

Pay attention ptwyzard -it works.

First I updated the firmware, this was easy, for the benefit of those who may not have the manual handy, here's how I did it.

I downloaded the file from the TViX web-site to my laptop, connected the laptop to the M5000 via USB, and copied the file over to the M5000 internal drive root directory, then disconnected the USB, re-powered the M5000 and selected the software app file from "play" menu and pressed "PLAY".

about 5 mins later it re-booted in to new software, straightaway I could see the menus I had been missing before!

Then I installed NetShare on the host PC, it created a directory for media on my C drive, but since all my media is stored on my "V" drive I open the "Settings" from status bar icon after install, and browsed to same name directory on my V Drive, I have organised my media into sub-folders in that directory.

Then I went to the TiVX, set network Drive 1 to NFS, set IP address of drive to match the IP address of the PC, checked the router was set to DHCP (which it was), connected up the network cable, powered up and BINGO.

Thank You Thank You Thank You AVS Forum, and especially KAXKID

What can I say!

Next thing I have to get working is FTP transfer from host PC to TViX internal drive, anyone help me with that?

Thanks

Thanks... the page says

"When My Network place is used as a ftp client, it has file size limitation of 4G byte."

but an ISO image file of a typical DVD film is more than 4GB so, I can't use this method to cone DVDs to my PC and transfer them to the TViX can I?

You'll have no problem transferring dvd's.

I use cuteFTP to transfer files from pc to Tvix, the last one i did being an HD film and 12gig in size....took about an hour.

correct, there is a limit of what you can do using the built-in windows software. the solution is to use a third party solution. i use an old copy of WS_FTP95LE which works fine for my uses, the point is to get away from the 4GB limit, you have to use a third party ftp app.

btw, if you are going to transfer a lot, the direct usb connection is fastest by a wide margin.

Now that I have been living with the TiVX for a few days, using a lot, here are some observations:

1. When you want to browse your music collection, you cannot select to browse by Artist Name, or Album Name, or Genre, the only browsing is via the Windows folder structure. 90% of the time this is OK since when I loaded all my CDs to my hard drive, I used Windows Media Player V9 which automatically creates a structure of Artist Name / Album Name etc. However if I am looking for tracks by a given artist that may sit across several albums - e.g. compilation albums - I really miss this feature.

2. Whilst listening to some music, you cannot browse your music collection to look for the next track you might want to listen too whilst still listening to current track. As soon as you take your browser out of the current folder, playback stops, even though you have not selected another track to listen to yet. This is a real PITA.

3. Whilst listening to music you cannot browse to your photo collections and look at some of your photos for same reason as 2. Again a real pain.

4. you cannot rotate photos taken in Portrait mode instead of landscape mode.

Interestingly... of the above, features 1,2, and 3 were all provided by my far more basic, much older, and FAR cheaper Linksys WMA11 (which cost me £40 new!).

Do any forum members know of ways around any of these? Is there a feedback forum direct to manufacturer anywhere?

Go to the main tvix site, register, then post a question to the Q&A section. They normally respond within a day or two and if they like the idea they will probably code quite quickly, especially if multiple people ask for the same thing. Out of interest, if anyone is adding a "feature request" to the M5000 sticky on this forum, without adding to the Tvix Q&A section, then it isn't really a request. Tvix people actually said they read this forum now and again, but it's not exactly a direct request.

Cheers

Hello, I am re opening this thread in the hope that KAXKID or Crivens can help.

I have two problems:

Background -

I got my M5000 working last year after your help. It is wired to a Linksys router, and then on to my PC. PC is running Win XP Pro SP2. I have TVIX netshare running on the PC. I have a large drive reserved for media and sub folders for audio, video, photos, all sub folders live inside a folder called tvixhd1 which is in the root.

PROBLEM 1: It was working fine a few months using v1.9.5. But recently I have found that I need to set the M5000 Network Disk 1 to "Slow(Samba) instead of Normal (NFS).
Setting the disk to Normal results in the M5000 unable to find the disk.

Nothing much has changed at either end. I did upgrade the firmware in the M5000 from 1.9.5 to 2.10.0 but since I mostly use internal storage, I am not sure when the problem started. Any way due to problem 2, I have gone back to 1.9.5 and still can only network with setting on Slow. Although music and pics playback fine, DVD ISO files on the networked PC freeze, I can only playback DVD ISO files from internal storage at moment.

PROBLEM 2:

using v2.1.0 or v 2.1.5...when viewing photos, the M5000 stops after every 6 photos and returns to the 2nd photo in the folder - the folder contains about 90 pictures. Returning to v1.9.5 has fixed the problem, I can progress through and see all the photos in a nice slide slow.

Any thoughts? especially problem 1 is really bothersome

Guygamps... have you solved your problem?

I entered a post here yesterday, but the Avsforum server appeared to be in maintenance when I replied... so the post never entered.

If I only could remember what I wrote

I assume that you are using Netshare to share you folder, and that it is a folder UNDER one of your HD. As you might now Netshare can't share root (you will need a NFS server to do that (ProNFS, Allegro NFS, Microsoft SFU etc)) or do something special with mounting the drive into another folder (which is the shared folder under Netshare).

Under Normal (NFS) the name of the share should be tvixhd1 (if using Netshare). It might be that when you upgraded from 1.9.5 to 2.0.0/2.1.0 the setting where reset. Can't remember as it is a long time since I ran 1.9.5.
Check it out at least. And do upgrade to 2.1.0 (there as some good fixes in there)

Wrt. problem 2. I think other people have seen this as well. Can't say I have seen it, but do a search here. You might find something.

Happy hunting!

M.
