Problem with Onkyo TX-SR674 using HDMI

Here is my setup:

1) Samsung HL-S7178 (1080P) TV connected to Onkyo TX-SR674 receiver using HDMI cable.

2) Samsung DVD-HD960 connected to Onkyo using HDMI.

3) Also have Bell 9200 HD-PVR connected to Onkyo with HDMI.

Problem:

When playing DVD getting small video/audio cuts (few miliseconds but enough to notice) about every 5 minutes. DVD player is setup to run at 1080P and problem happens selecting DTS or DD5.1.

Bell HD-pvr running at 1080I not giving any issues. Running the dvd player at 1080I still gives cuts but less frequently.

It seems the Onkyo is having problem processing the audio at the same time as doing passthru of 1080P to TV.

Anyone experienced this?

Tested connecting the dvd directly to the Samsung tv (It has 2 HDMI ports and supports 1080P) and the problem does not happen.

sorry, i don't have a 1080 display, but i've never seen these issues. i use an upconverting DVD player at 720p (until my A2 arrives!) and also a Pro brand ATSC tuner at 1080i. neither seems to have a problem.

it strikes me as odd that your Bell PVR at 1080i doesn't exhibit the problem, but that your DVD player at 1080i does (though less often than at 1080p). when you tested the connection directly to the television, did you use the same cable?

I have the same problem with my Sammy Blu-ray player at 1080p through the 674. I thought I was alone.

If you have not done so please report it to the ONKYO support line (800-229-1687).

I am awaiting a call back from them after spending over 1 hour explaining the problem and after they told me they did a test that did not show the problem. After a while they admitted their test was at 1080I....

Hopefully they can come out with a fix otherwise I am returning the unit (bought it 2 weeks ago).

I used the same cable when doing test directly to tv and also swapped cables many times doing my tests. What I believe is the reason it is not hapenning using the Bell HD-pvr is that because the Bell pvr only sends video thru the hdmi (I have a toslink for sound) and this particular problem is related to decoding audio while doing passthru of the video when connected in hdmi.

Gillest, that's disheartening! Please keep us informed as to what happens with Onkyo support.

I'll do some testing with my HDtuner set at 1080i and see if I can produce the same problem with mine.

For what it's worth, I haven't had any problems with 720p or 1080i with the Onkyo-- just 1080p.

Well that is the issue with this receiver (1080P).

Onkyo claims that their receiver is able to passthru 1080P. So far it seems that this feature does not work properly. I bought it because of that feature and I personnaly want it to work.

Nathan, Did you report the problem with Onkyo? We need people to start complaining if we want them to understand that this is not an isolate issue but for everyone using 1080P.

More and more people will be using it in the future with Blueray or HD-dvd. I cannot believe they released a product without doing the basic tests at 1080P.

I know you also reported the problem to ONKYO. Did you get a reply from them?. I am still waiting for them to respond. I have sent another email and also have left a vm with the Onkyo distributor for Canada.

Hopefully they will be responsive to our problem.

Well, I have sent numerous emails to Onkyo support and left a voice mail with the Canadian distributor for ONKYO but nobody has replied yet. I have asked my dealer to help by contacting ONKYO thru his channel and so far he has not been successful.


I am very close to trow in the towel and to ask my dealer for a refund and I would then probably be considering the PIO Elite 81 or 82TX. More money but hopefully these will work as advertised.....

Will give it until next Monday....

Well, just got off the phone with my reseller and he told me that ONKYO is getting a fix (small transistor + software from what I gathered ??) and that should arrive sometime next week.

This is good news because it shows that they acknowledged that there is a problem and they have an action plan!. Hopefully this will solve the problem for me and any others buying this receiver.

Well, I have been contacted by my reseller who gave me the name and address of an authorized Onkyo service center that is supposed to have the latest fix for my 674. I am to go there an request that my 674 be upgraded for 1080P. Apparently they are aware of the small transistor that needs to be changed and the new software that needs to be loaded.

Going there tomorrow and hopefully I wont have to leave the receiver there for a few days and they will be able to upgrade it on the spot.

Will let you know tomorrow night.

Had to leave my receiver with the Onkyo authorized service centre unfortunately. They said it could take a few days up to a week because they needed to order the part (transistor?).

The person at the service centre showed me an email sent to them by ONKYO advising them of this issue (1080P) and the work needing to be done on the TX-SR674.

Will just have to wait and see if it really fixes my problem.

I'm curious, did you get your unit locally, or did you pick it up from an online retailer? I'm just looking at my options (Marantz SR 4001, HK AVR645, JVC RX-D702B, Denon AVR-887, Onkyo TX-SR674) and availability seems to be coming into play for my decision.

Also, good luck with getting the unit fixed... I've been following the thread for awhile to see how you make out.

I bought the unit from a local A/V store in Montreal. They have been great at pursuing Onkyo to help me (maybe because i told them I wanted a refund if Onkyo could not fix it ).

As I mentioned previously, I will let everyone know once I get my 674 back as far as if the fix corrected my 1080P problem.

Well, I bought this receiver to complement my 1080p lcd. When I get a 1080p disk player I fully expect 1080p passthrough with no glitches. From what you have posted it seems there is a problem with that. I do not expect to have to take a brand new unit to get an upgrade so soon.
Also, after reading other posts here about the 674 not being capable of 7.1 LPCM via HDMI, I think I should have waited before making my purchase. Honestly, since I am a newbie at this so I could be wrong, it appears that I will not be able to use HDMI for a 7.1 speaker set. If this is incorrect, someone please enlighten me.
I did get a good price for the 674 and it works great for now. It is the future hookups that I intended to make that worry me now.

Unfortunately, I believe you are right about HDMI not being able to carry 7.1 Lpcm on the 674.

As far as 1080P, hopefully ONKYO will have solved this issue with the upgrade.

Will post here when i get my unit back.

Aparantly not yet. I emailed them with the same question as I'm currently looking at the 604 and 674. They see it as an isolated issute. Maybe if more have the problem they will think differntly.

Got my Onkyo 674 back today from repair.

They changed a resistance and upgraded the software. Guess what? It did not fix the problem! I just called my dealer to let him know.

As far as I am concerned I just want a refund at this stage.

The fact that your problem is happening only once every few minutes implies to me that it is happening when the player tries to reconfirm the HDCP (copy protection) compliance of the HDMI signal path.

Running a 1080p signal uses a lot of bandwidth in the cable. If the cable is not quite up to it, the additional effort of re-doing the HDCP handshake may cause a glitch. It sounds like you are right on the borderline of this working.

A 1080i signal uses less bandwidth and thus is working for you.

If this is really what's going on, then you may only need to replace your current HDMI cables (all of them that need to be in the 1080p signal path) with high end cables that have slightly less signal degradation. Get the shortest cables that will work for you as length is also an issue in such cases.

Such cables are ridiculously expensive, so get them from a place where you can return them just in case they don't solve your problem.

That is very interesting.

I am using the 3' hdmi cable that came with the Samsung DVD-HD960 player connected to the onkyo 674. I am using a 6' 24 gauge HDMI cable (from monoprice) from the Onkyo to the Samsung TV.

I will see if I can get some high end cables and try your suggestion.

And remember it's not just the guage. A thicker cable is not necessarily better. Partly it is the internal connections and the quality of the contacts on the connectors. But largely it is just that the more expensive cables are cherry picked by quality control and only the best get the big price tag.
