How crazy do you honestly think CES will be?

I, personally, am tempering my level of hope for the show and imagining that it will actually be pretty conservative. Seems like a lot of people are claming that it will be "teh megaton!" - but I don't know.

It's hard for me to see much more happening besides the announcement of possibly 1 or 2 new players and maybe the showing of a small handful of new titles from the studios that won't necessarily be "must-haves". And all revealed will be that which is pretty much expected or possibly even leaked before the show.

How big are the announcements typically at the show? What do you guess or specifically expect from this one? Can any insiders hint at how major their company's presence will be, what specific level of announcement to expect?

I just want to limit my losses at the blackjack tables.

CES is far more than HD. In regards to the HD shiny disc format war:

I expect this year there will be a lot of CE announcements for HD DVD and Blu-ray players. That seems to be mind-blowing in your listing of choices. I may not caragorize it that way, but I think there will multiple hardware announcements as well as cheaper chinese HD DVD players and maybe some dual - format player announcements if the PS3 falters.

Kosty, try the Texas Hold-em poker tables.

I was invited by CES to be a guest speaker and expert panelist at the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray mini session.

I have not missed a CES show in more than 15 years. CES is my favorite show.

See you in Vegas.

Don't know about average - but I don't think we will get announcements like the last one which define the format war ($500 hd-a1 and the 360 add-on). Except if some studio support announcements are made ...

I think there are a lot of people waitting to see if there will be studios going neutral, if not BR player sales will peak after CES.

I agree with that

Really, why so? And how certain are you? Seems more likely to me that, the BD studios will need to provide more than they currently have announced (versus the goodness/content of what HD DVD has announced) and that BD players will need to start outselling HD DVD players over the holiday as well first. Otherwise, you'll still have a lot of HD DVD owners/pursuers who see few advantages to the BD game.

Robert, now that you own the Panasonic and (I assume) have seen some of the Blu-Ray titles (esp. the Warners titles with the same transfer), do you see any quality difference?

You would hope not - if you support BD. If a few thousand a month is the peak, formats longevity is doubful.

I need more time to properly set up my theater room and do a HD DVD/BD shoot-out.

Hopefully by this weekend I'll have my second theater room set up with a XA1, Panasonic BD10 connected to the VP50 scaler feed to my new JVC HD10K 1080p/24 Hz front projector.

I will have all sources properly calibrated and set up and do a side by side comparison of several of the same titles in BD and HD DVD.

I need more time to get everything set up and tested.

I havent heard it mentioned in awhile and not sure if the issue was resolved or not but previously it was shown the first few dual realease titles were croped on the BR titles on the sides. Have any of your comparisons shown this issue as corrected?

I'm thinking the top two categories. If you're not excited by CE equipment at CES, then you probably won't care too much for this thread.

Studios announcements, hopefully.

I don't agree with the above posts that BR sales will peak if no studios announce neutrality. I'm certain that hybrid players will be announced.

In that vein, perhaps 25% of HD DVD folks will decide to wait for a hybrid player, and most of the rest may dig their heels in. Some will pick up a cheaper BR player like a PS3. But there won't be a wholesale rush to BR standalone players with Hybrid players coming to market.

I expect a lot of projector and AVR action also.

Robert,

Love to hear about your results! Maybe best to start a new thread.

When/where is the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray session taking place at CES???

Not sure how to handle the findings of my set-up. I am considering inviting several well respected members to do the blind evaluation with me so everyone will know the information is unbias and accurate.

Click here to view some primary information on my CES session. The session title is Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: And the Winner Is...

You can also search for my session by speaker name, I'm the last one listed, Zohn, Robert

Thought this thread worthy of a timely bump.

It seems the lineup of panelist has been finalized....will this be a cage match Robert?

I can't wait to see what Denon has up their sleeves. Main thing keeping me back from a 4306 right now...

There will be no break in the studio alignment in the format war.

I think Sony will announce their 2G players, including a $500-600 model, both using the lense system they have in the PS3 (for CD/DVD/BD read). Both will be "Full 1080P" with HDMI 1.3 though 24fps will be exclusive to the higher end model. Analog outputs on at least the higher end.

I'm betting there are some more 24fps (or 120) displays from multiple vendors. 24p becomes mainstream (moreso than usual) for the projector crowd.

I voted:
Slightly above-average. Nothing big but a lot of cool little announcements, for ex.

Well, it's starting to shape up in the "mind-blowing" category now!

We've got Universal players, more CE vendors for HD DVD to be announced, potentially a new Xbox SPU, and "possibly" more studio support.

Not to mention some nifty new display devices to see...
