I heard a rumour that General Hospital Is going hi def sometime in November. Can anyone either comfirm or deny this??? It would be cool if it happened by the anniversary special on Nov 16th!!
There have been rumors over the past year about General Hospital going HD sometime soon, it's just that they have no firm date yet. The anniversary special seems like a good date, networks usually market an HD transition with some kind of event.

Besides going to higher resolution, the GH set also has a new look, part of a storyline that has the hospital reopening after an explosion. ABC was able to repurpose set components from the primetime spinoff General Hospital: Night Shift, which ran for two seasons on Disney-ABC cable network SOAPnet. The new set, which has 14 different pieces, will allow the realism of General Hospital to grow bigger than it's ever been, says Brian Frons, president of daytime for the Disney-ABC Television Group.

Counting post-production time, it takes three to four days to produce each episode of GH, and the show is usually shooting three to four weeks ahead of air.

ABC doesn't have any concrete plans to convert its other two soaps, All My Children and One Life to Live, to HD.

ABC still has THREE soap shows... I thought they were going to get rid of one of their shows a couple of years ago? Maybe that was NBC.

It's amazing how long these shows have been on air, the budget must be really small.

In 2008 CBS' "Guiding light budget was cut to about 1/3 of the 2007 production budget I've been told.

They shot in standard definition with prosumer camcorders.

I doubt they could have gotten away with that in high definition as so much more would have been seen (errors).
Guiding Light just announced that this summer they will go off the air.
Most likely it will not be replaced with another soap opera.

We shall see in ABC follows suit within 18 months instead of taking all 3 of theirs HD...

According to Marc Berman's "Programming Insider" it may be replaced with another revival of "Pyramid" ("Things to be aired in SD" - ready... go!)

GH is now in HD!!!! My wife will be thrilled! She has been waiting for this day since we bought our first HDTV 4 yrs ago. There does appear to be some weird lighting issues going on with camera switching.

HD and 5.1. A little soft, not surpisingly. The title sequence used stretched images of the cast.
You'd think they would create a new HD intro...half the characters in the final shot of the current intro are dead...

A little soft????? I checked it out and it looks like 16x9 SD. No need to upgrade the sets or makeup if this is how it's going to look. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a solid 2.5.

Aren't most of the abc soaps filmed in the same studios...not sure why only one would be going hd.

nope. All in different studios. GH is filmed in LA. OLTL & AMC film in NY (in two different buildings).

I checked this out. This is the worst quality HD I ever saw. It looks like the old FOX widescreen HD. ABC should be ashamed of themselves to put out HD like that.

I think your WABC feed is degraded due to multicasting. GH looks damn good on WJLA in DC.

I have 3 separate ABC feeds and GH looks bad, worse and awful on them in that order.

agreed. watching via directv and i told my wife the other day that this may easily be the worst looking hd show i've ever seen. it's a true step backwards for the industry. i wonder what the heck is going on with it

Scott G and talbain, you both probably live within range of ABC owned-and-operated stations, which recently reduced ABC HD bitrates. Some have noted softness in the ABC HD feed; this may be causing your problem.

Scott, there's a report that WABC has improved the sharpness; you (and talbain?) might want to try again. So far, no luck at WPVI, if talbain's in the Philly area.

WABC-DT FiOS.
WABC adjusted their HD feed Wednesday and the PQ is not as soft as it has been.
There's some visible video noise from the digital compression but it still looks good with not super heavy filtering.
Here's a few caps from today's episode,

Couple weeks back my wife loved me because GH was in HD. For the past few weeks I've been no better off than the red-headed stepchild as it seems WJLA ABC7 in DC has ceased its HD broadcast of this soap. Neither Comcast or OTA are displaying GH in HD, I checked the primetime HD programming and they are still in HD so I'm fishing for some backup here to get me out of the dog's house...am I correct that it is not currently being broadcast in HD in my market?

No reason why it shouldn't be in HD actually. Not likely they delay the feed.

Thanks for the reply.

Couple more things I just noticed:
1) Oprah and the Local news which come on just after GH are both in HD (cable and OTA).
2) The TitanTV Guide no longer lists GH with a HD tag (I believe I recall seeing it while GH was airing in HD a few weeks back).

Hmmmm...
