3. buy a combo player
i think option 3 is rather expensive and lack availability. so the only real options are 1 and 2. how does option 1 compare to the a35? does the xbox 360 hd-dvd add-on do all the good stuff of true hd and dts-ma?
My opinion is that if you're not also going to use the 360 primarily for gaming, then get a standalone. The add-on doesn't have the audio options (TrueHD, etc) of a standalone, and the 360 does make quite a bit of fan noise during HD-DVD playback.
I'd really only suggest the add-on to people who a) want 1080p, b) don't need the latest audio support, c) already have a 360 or were planning on getting a 360 anyways.
Note that the add-on will reportedly never support 1080p24, which sucks if you watch lots of films. Most stand-alones either support this or are expected to do so with firmware upgrades.
I don't regret purchasing the add-on, but I think in the future when the war is won and stand-alones are sub-$100, I'll be buying a new stand-alone player.
