I'd really only suggest the add-on to people who a) want 1080p, b) don't need the latest audio support, c) already have a 360 or were planning on getting a 360 anyways.

Note that the add-on will reportedly never support 1080p24, which sucks if you watch lots of films. Most stand-alones either support this or are expected to do so with firmware upgrades.

I don't regret purchasing the add-on, but I think in the future when the war is won and stand-alones are sub-$100, I'll be buying a new stand-alone player.

I sold My 360 and bought an A2, the Xbox has too many RROD issues t use as a standalone

why cant the add-on never support 1080p/24

Thanks but it didn't help. The disc won't even load it says its an unreadable format.

Just a suggestion, but when I popped mine into my 360 addon, it requested an update. Probably the same reason other posts on this thread are complaining about their players stopping reading discs. Could be wrong, but then again, I carry firmware update discs with me when we install players. Mainly a problem with BD, but who knows with HD-DVD.

I'm not getting an option to update the firmware. I haven't gotten one in a long time 6 months at least.

Well you should have at this point. It seems like every few weeks I get a firmware update when I stick a disc in. I wonder if there is a setting you can go to to force one, or a setting that was accidentally set to not download them anymore.

I had a few problems with discs, but they all seem to work fine now. I would imagine it was from those firmware updates.

I'm really going out and guessing on this one since I don't have mine connected via VGA, but I thought there was a setting in the Dashboard to adjust the VGA hertz to certain presets.

I think the add-on only makes sense if you already own an xBox 360. If you want to get an xBox for gaming, then go ahead with the add-on. But if the xBox is just going to run the add-on, get a dedicated player. The danger with the add-on is that it requires the xbox in order to function, so if your xBox dies (and they have a high failure rate), you won't be able to play your movies either. Really, I consider my xBox 360 HD DVD add-on only a temporary solution that because I already owned an xbox allowed me to get into the high-def game for cheap. My permanent solution is to purchase a combo player like Samsung's BD-UP5000 once the prices fall below $499.

Hope that helps.

Meh... I thought I read that in the forum recently, but I can't find it now so I must have been mistaken.

I'll amend my statement by saying that the add-on has yet to support 24fps, and in my opinion never will. I cannot confirm or deny that the hardware is capable of producing such a signal.

Sorry if I added confusion to the ongoing 24fps question.

Absolutely. If you're not getting an Xbox to game with, then why spend $500 when a stand-alone can be had for less than $300?

In the Insiders' thread Andy mentions that adding support would technically be easy for the player side, the Dashboard would also have to support it and that's not something that is in the works. That's my paraphrase of it so check the Insiders' thread for a better/more technical explanation.

Yup :-). If someone can tell me the version they updated to, I should be able to tell you what's in it. (Why don't I know the version you may ask? That's a different story).

Check the Audio settings in the HD DVD player, maybe you have WMAPro set? If all else fails try connecting using the RCA outputs.

Thanks, I posted the update details to my blog.

(I needed someone to confirm the version as my own Xbox here at home has "secret sauce" and downloaded the update a while ago, so I can't use that to tell when the updates go public).

Just to follow up I return the Bourne DVD and got my 3rd copy and this time it worked flawlessly and I even got a firmware update on the 360.

I've come to the conclusion that this combo format sucks and I will stick with Blu-Ray whenever possible until these issues are resolved.

Yeah that's what I do, and usually the Blu ray in that case will be $5 cheaper too.

If I hook up my 360 HDMI into my reciever I will be able to get digital surround audio from the HDMI connected HD dvd add on correct?

I just read somewhere that the HDMI connection doesnt support digital audio for the HD DVD add on, but that can't be right...

the xbox transcodes whatever audio stream you select on the disc into whatever audio format you select on the AO's advanced menu. it will never output TrueHD or DD+ as such, to be recognized by your 705.

what happens is: you pick a track (say, truehd). the AO transcodes that track into DD, DTS, or WMA9Pro, depending on your selection in the AO advanced menu. Your receiver will then get the one you selected - DD, DTS, or WMA9Pro. This happens for all tracks on all hd dvds all the time. it cannot output the bitstream DD+, THD, or DTSHD tracks. It also cannot output PCM, which is what most standalones do, and is also lossless. with the AO, all the HD audio "extras" of your 705 are pretty much wasted.

Alright guys question. When I am watching a movie on my Xbox add-on it seems to jitter every once in a while. I myself think that this is unexceptable and dont see how anyone else isnt bothered by it.

So I am assuming that not everyone is having this problem. I have the xbox elite connected by HDMI. It is always something slight I am sure I dont notice every time it happens but I see it when ever there is a big fighting scene.

Is there an update or should I return mine and get a new one. Does anyone know anything on this issue?

Your television wouldn't happen to be a Samsung LN-TXX71F or a Sony Bravia XBR with the 120hz would it? These televisions have a feature that attempt to make motion more fluid by creating additional frames between the original ones; Samsung calls it Auto-Motion Plus and Sony calls it Motionflow. I ask because this feature does not play nice with the xBox add-on, and will cause the kind of jittering you're talking about. If that's the case, then turn that feature off. If you don't have one of these televisions, then I can't help ya

so uh i have the hd dvd drive here, i brought it back home from school. my problem is that i'm using my brothers xbox rather than my own, which is the one i installed the hd dvd disc on.

now i wont have my xbox for a month and need a way to get that disc installed on this xbox somehow.

i know for a fact something is off because i just tried playing Syriana and there are no HD DVD interactive options available at all.
Well I dont have the 71F or the XBR sony but I do have the A3000 sony which still has the motion flow. Problem is that I always have the motionflow turned off so that cannot be the problem.

I also just checked Bourne Identity using both motion flow and no motion flow and it still had the jitters. That is my 4th HD-DVD to have the problem I am going to return the player on friday and try a diff one.

I am sure this has already been answered but cant find the answer when I search for it. I have the add on for the 360 and want to update the firmware can I the ethernet into the back and it will update or do I need to do something else?

john19,

As far as I am aware, firmware updates download automatically when you boot your 360 (as long as it is connected to the internet). A pop-up menu will appear and tell you that an update is needed. If you have already done this, then your firmware is up-to-date.

Thank you I have never hooked it up the to the internet. I will do that then and see what happens.
