I wonder how long before Microsoft discounts or discontinues their add-on? At this point they either need to make it standard hardware on every new xBox, or just stop selling the thing.

If you're going to rent HD DVDs instead of buying, you'll need a netflix account as Blockbuster is Blu-Ray exclusive.

blockbuster rents hd dvds in their online program. they are not blu ray exclusive online. they just suck in general, so get a netflix account anyway.

If my xbox 360 is currently component could I transmit 1080p via the following route: buy the 360 HD VGA cable, convert to DVI using a VGA/DVI connector, then convert that to HDMI using a DVI/HDMI converter?

No. VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. A simple VGA/DVI connector (adapter) doesn't convert the VGA analog to digital. You'll need a converter of some sort to convert the VGA analog output into DVI or HDMI digital.

Like this one.

After all that, you'd probably be better off just upgrading to an elite if HDMI is a must have.

I have the 360 premium (no hdmi) version and was thinking about picking up an AO off of ebay. I have a RPHDTV that does not have hdmi. My question has to do w/ upconversion. I'm assuming this won't be upconverted because I will be using component cables and that
DRM crap will force it to play at 480i right?

Right, the xBox only upconverts over VGA or HDMI, and it really has nothing to do with the HD DVD add-on (you'll get upconversion from either drive once your xBox is connected with VGA or HDMI). In my experience though, the improvement in image quality is very subtle.

Agreed. I have the Premium/Add-On connected via component to a 65" 1080p DLP TV. Game and HD-DVD images on the DLP are awesome despite being a 1080i analog input. Folks forget most are getting upconversion via their TVs anyway. I'll stick with the 2 year old Premium until it dies (knock on wood).

Well, 480p actually, but that's hardly much better.

The best solution for upconverting DVD over component is to find an Oppo DV-970HD DVD player and hack the firmware. You can get 1080i over component. It doesn't play HD-DVDs, though, so it's not much of a solution at all.

Installing the addon was no problem and I played King Kong first, the movie plays perfectly. But if I put "300" in, the disc will not read, says "Unplayable Disc" and I stay on the dashboard. I've looked very hard into the issue and it seems to stem around firmware. The firmware seems to install onto my hard drive and I don't see how I can remove it without formatting. I even burned the latest firmware onto a CD and I had no luck.

Now, if I take the hard drive off my Xbox, 300 will actually start playing. My next issue is that around chapter 12 of 300 and various other play times, the movie will stutter endlessly and I'll have to skip the chapter.

Basically, regarding the disc, it sounds like an issue that is happening to a lot of people so I can easily just get a replacement. What I'm concerned about is whether my hardware is faulty. Any help on the matter would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I've got the exact same problem, and I went through the trouble of exchanging the disc (Amazon gave me a one-time pass for going over the 30-day policy), DIDN'T WORK.

Now I'm kind of freaked, 300 just won't play at all, and I'm starting to have a problem every now and then where discs will need a couple ejects to "get it going." I mean if this is just something fixed with a reset maybe I'll give that a go, but it's looking less and less like a download-updates problem, and more like a hardware problem.

Same for me too. Some movies works fine and the others don't even brand new ones with out a single finger print. Some movies gets stuck in the beginning and others in the end. I just ended up RMA'ing the thing since my three months was almost up. Hopefully I get a brand new one instead of my old repaired unit.

After reading a few posts a few pages back I realized the movies that didn't work were combo disks. I'm wondering getting a brand new different player will make a difference or is it just the combo discs or a combonation of both hardware and combo disks? Will replacing the unit solve the problem or will microsoft need to update the firmware to play most combo disks? Its sad because 5 of my movies are combos and the ones I rent are usually combo disks also. Netflix and Blockbuster needs to stay away from the combo disks. It doesn't make sense because the users are renting HD and don't need the DVD side. Maybe after when they sell it but that's only a couple dollars more.

Was watching Planet Earth last night on HD DVD and the narration was very quiet (BBC version) compared to the rest of the audio. Is that my 360s HD DVDs fault or my TV? (Aquos 46D).

Should I get an amp for this thing? Any recommendations?

Any word if they have a fix for Combo HD/DVD disks yet? I cannot get any of mine to work for an entire movie. Also rentals don't work. I tried calling Microsoft and can barely understand the call center technicians. Also they have no clue about the issue. I've RMA'd mine since my 3 months is coming up. I hope it works.

I got the add on for christmas with a few movies, I have watched all the movies and they all looked great!

Today I tried to watch Transformers and I got a error message that said "cannot play this content" ? WTF? I put in the Bourne Ultimatium and it played fine until the end when it locked up, took the disc out and it had a hair on it, put it back in then it said dirty disc? WTF there was nothing on it I take very good care of my things. Finally got it to play.

So I put transformers back in, same thing "cannot play this content", I put the special features disc in and it played just fine? anyone have this problem, or any ideas...I'm so pissed right now I just wanna take it back.

I have a Harmony 680 remote. I tried to make an activity to play the HD add-on. I found the add on in the device list and set up the activity. When I tried to use the activity, the 360 did not turn on. I then turned it on manually and still couldn't get any functions to work.

Couple questions:
1. Can the Harmony turn on the xbox 360?
2. Is there any tricks to getting this to work? I've never had a problem with any other device.
3. Do I have to have the add on remote to get it to learn functions? I don't have it. I bought it used and didn't have the remote.

Hopefully someone can help me out. If not, I will call Logitech.

Thanks.

I have the 360 harmony remote and it can turn on the Xbox 360 I'm sure logitech has the remote code for the others to work for it. You can use the help function on the remote to try some different settings to fix the issue your having.

Make sure your 360 is not set to 360 remote only. Its under the system blade.

OK here is a new issue. I spent have of the day yesterday trying to fix my computer that would not post. Only to find out that when I unplugged my add on it booted up fine. Now this has not been a problem since day one. Why now all the sudden I can't have my HD add on plugged in to my computer when it boots up.

Have you done a BIOS update lately or changed settings in your CMOS. Try resetting to defaults in your BIOS.

OK, has anyone noticed a checkerboard type effect in the blacks with the add-on.

I have my addon with a newer elite connected via hdmi to my samsung lcd. i can't help but notice some little boxes or like a thick window screen pattern over the blacks and other darker colors. it seems to be the xbox, because i hooked up my old vizio and saw the same problem(just less detail which is to be expected). My hd-dvr and computer show none of the similar distortion. I also tried different hdmi cables and inputs and no change. please help. thanks.

Sorry if this has been asked or dicussed before. But it is kind of hard to scan through all 158 pages of this thread.

Is there a general consensus as to what is best to set digital output as on the HD DVD player? Im talking about DD5.1 Vs DTS.

My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V2700 and can handle all formats except the new HD ones of course. I know the HD DVD player will basically downconvert the True DD+/HD/DTS signal to either DD 5.1 or DTS as per the selections. But what is considered the optimal setting?

I tested with Transformers and with DD 5.1 selected the track sounds louder and boomier. When I select DTS I must raise the volume a bit for it to sound as loud and boomy. When I play king kong, there is one particular scene where Kong is grabbing for the shackled girl and you hear a roar through the rear channels. In DD 5.1 the growl is pretty noticeable. With DTS selected it sounds more subdued. Not bad, but not as pronounced. Again, I need to raise the volume in DTS to get same effect. Is this normal?

Oh forgot to mention. I'm running on an Elite through HDMI connection to the receiver, if that helps.

I have a PC at work where the BIOS attempts to boot from an external USB hard drive if one is attached. it will actually change the BIOS settings to do this. I need to be careful when re-booting to make sure I do not to have an external drive connected and powered up. if i forget, i must disconnect the external and change the BIOS back to boot from the internal SATA drive. i do not remember whether it is Phoenix or Award BIOS, but it is a SuperMicro motherboard. never made sense to me, i just needed it to boot and work and this did the trick.

It depends on the receiver. Some receivers sounds better using DTS others don't. My Harman Kardon AVR7200 sounds bettery using the DTS.

If I were you I would keep it a DD. Hope this helps.

i know this is a regular dvd but i cant play the first disc of the 10th season of the simpsons in the add on. its gives me unplayable content error, then i put it in the 360 and it plays fine. just wondering if this could lead to future problems.
If you have add on make sure your xbox is connected to the internet. I've never had a problem with my add on playing combo's or anything because my player updates itself for new updates. If you don't have internet access check xbox.com for updates and install them via cd.

Hi, tried looking and could not find a concrete answer. I'm wondering if the 360 hd add on drive will play foreign dvds that are region 2 let's say and PAL or is this limited to hd dvds being able to play?
