Yamaha 1700 -vs- Pioneer Elite VSX82TXS

I have had a Yamaha RX-V2500 for a couple of years now. It went crazy on me a week or so ago so, I am in the market for a new receiver. I brought a RX-V1700 home from Tweeter and have had it for a week.

Tonight, I brought home a VSX82TXS from Best Buy to compare the sounds. The Pioneer is amazing. I hear stuff in movies that I have never heard listening to the Yamaha. Also, when playing my Elton John DVDs, the sound is so much fuller (integrated?).

I do lose most of the DSP settings of the Yamaha though without having two SB speakers hooked up.

Thoughts?

Do you still have them both? How do they compare for music? Is one "warmer" than the other? What is your speaker set-up?

Frank I would not be too concerned about the dsp modes, if the pioneer sounds better to your ears then keep the pioneer.

This is similar to what I was askingi nthe other thread. Do you really hear things on the Pioneer you just couldn't hear when using the Yamaha?

And how good were the DSP modes?

I will be keeping the Pioneer. The Yamaha is very "bright / harsh" compared to the Pioneer. I can also confirm from several movie scenes that I watch over and over again during evaluations in my HT. I do not know what it is but, I do hear things on the Pioneer (sounds) that are none existent on the Yamahas (during movies). Someone in another thread thought the Pioneer had a much better mid-range than the Yamaha so, maybe that has something to do with it.

For speakers, I have Def Tech BP7006s, C/L/R 2300, and BP2.x surrounds.

P.S. I also like the THX Cinema DSP mode that the Pioneer has. The only DSP mode that I am really missing is the one that I used while playing games.

The accentuated highs may be drawing your attention from the midrange. This is a common problem with a bright reproduction. I notice this in a pair of brighter headphones I have. The midrange sometimes gets lost in the harshness.

I am pretty sure that the VSX 8x series from Pioneer Elite has a THX games DSP mode to it. I had a VSX72TXV and now have a VSX81TXV (long story) and both have the THX games mode on them if I am not mistaken. Try it out, see what you think. I just moved and don't have my new speakers yet but am anticipating hearing the setup.

CT Andrew,

You are coorect about the THX Games mode. However, you cannot activate this mode unless you have all 7.1 speakers connected. Besides the THX Cinema, none of the THX modes are available when running a 5.1 setup.

Is this true?

I plan on running 5.1.

The specs show 12 Advanced Surround Modes. How many are available or better yet how many do I lose running 5.1 as opposed to 7.1.
