ok much more updates in here.

first of all grandmaster is right. you need to push 5 seconds the power button down and it automaticly calibrates the signal. it standsl also in the manual. but hey what can i say. real man dont read manuals :)

i just checked today Ridge Racer 7 on it. and all i can say it is amazing.

when you put in ridge racer. after about 3 seconds it reads the disc. the background of main menu changes into ridge racer logo. and if you go to the game icon in main manu ( looks like ps3 controller ) then you see a small video played.

now when you pres sthat video it strats the game.

loading time takes about 30 seconds to go to xevios mini game. here you can play it. press start will go to main game.

now somethign cool. when i was at main menu i put out the bluray ridge racer disc just to see if it would crash or something. but i could go to the options in the game . now when i actually press start and it should load a course. it simply hangs. it doesnt show a message there is no game disc. but.............. when i put the disc back inside. it starts loading the game without any hickup or problem. awesome.

also 1 more tip. if you want to quit the game and go back to main menu. hold down the PS button in teh middle of the joypad and it will show a menu where you can turn of the system, return to main menu etc.

MORE MOVIES CHECKED :)

i tried today 8 below ( USA version )which is avc encoded.

and i can say it works perfect. same speed as kingdom of heaven 10 seconds loading time.

also i tested today the samsung player with the ps3 with the samsumg 46 inch plasma player we have at work. and i can tell you the ps3 picture quality is far better then the samsung. i am truelly surprised. remeber 8th below is soft looking. well playing the movie with the ps3 it totall renders the soft image away. and show a very natural movie display.not that it will be raor sharp. but natural looking image. how i would expect the movie to look like. the movie picture i was hoping to see.

also 8 below shows bitrates between 11 and 21 mps so far with a dd 5.1 48 kz 640KPS audio track.

also i turn off the ps3 while playing 8th below . it takes 20 seconds total to boot up the ps3 and play that excact same chapter in the movie when i turned off the ps3.

Dinosaurs. ( USA Version ) remember how soft this movie looked. Fear no more the PS3 is here and i have to say.incredible! i mean seriously. the picture quality is so much better now. when i am right infront of the tv. it looks simply perfect. so natural as this picture looks. the softness it is gone. the dark scenes looks perfect. however when i move left or right from the tv. it shows the picture softer. but when i am standing right infront of it. it is perfect. this is how i wanted to experience this kind of movie.

Lethal Weapon ( USA ) VC-1 encoded. another movie like dinosaurs that was soft looking.

the beginning. specially there picture looks soft and colors are kinda washed out, after that it gets a whole lot better :)

it shows 5.1 channel english 48 khz and vc-1 encoded bitrate going from 18 till 25 mps.

around the 30 minute mark the quality really shines. it shows now a very natural color. same as dinosaurs and 8th below. the softness is gone. but only when you watch it right infront of the tv. if you go little bit left or right it shows a more softer image.

also if you hold the PS button on your joypad for 2 seconds while playing a movie you can chose between contine movie or go back to main menu of the ps3. if you hold the PS button for 5 seconds. you go to menu where you can chose shutdown system or change controller input.

also the PS3 is dead silent. i havent experienced any system like this that is this silent. there is no difference if it is powered on. or powered off.

all in all i am very very amazed with this system as a bluray player and as game machine.

and there are so many options to play with. it is also not a console anymore. but a truelly multi media machine. and i can only imagine what people will do it with in the future when they will start programming utils for it.. i think we will see so many incredible utilities for it.

today i was thinking what if i install linux and put something like words on it or photoshop. connect a wireless keyboard and mouse i could just work infront of my tv. when i get bore di play agame or listen to music.

anyway so far comparing the ps3 to the samsung video wise. the PS3 wins it. actually i think the PS3 would come very very close to the PQ quality of the Pioneer. ofcours ethe pioneer aint finished yet . so it is hard to compare it to that.

audio wise. i am not an expert in that at all. so i feel that i can compare the difference between the players. to test that well i would have to connect the hdmi connection to a audio system and that the hdmi to tv. i just dont have that audio system. not at work and at home.

just let me say this, 600 usa dollars for this machine is rediculous cheap. i am a poor guy. but what i am really really impressed with all the functions on the ps3. it is truelly easy to lose track sometimes on which buttons you have to press. because there are so many options.

the only thing i would like to see though in the PS3 is that when i put a movie inside that i watched like halfway. that when it start up it would gave me the option you want to start the movie where you left off or do you want to start at the beginning o fthe movie.

very much like with powerdvd on the pc. so hopefully they can put that in the a firmware down the road.

other then that. if you thinking should i buy ps3 or not for bluray movie playback or to switch over to high defenition in general. i can tell you right away. buy it. 10000% buy it.
you wouldnt regret it that is for sure.

also 1 more thig. if you have a dvi connection on your tv only. no problem.

just buy a full pins cable that go from hdmi to dvi. connect the hdmi cable to ps3 then connect it to dvi on your tv. power on monitor and press the poweron button 5 seconds and it works. well at least for me :)

Awesome! Cant wait till friday!
Very cool.

I don't have a HDMI connection on my set. Could you let us know how the video quality is when hooked up via componet cables?

Do you think it looks about the same or not as good with your HDMI connection.

Thanks!

via component at 480i or 480p . it looks really 70% less then HDMI at 1080p.

difference is between night and day.

if i compare it to ps2 at 480i or 480p. ps3 via component at 480i or 480p it looks around 50% better then ps2.

so best is get a tv with hdmi and 1080p :)

Could the PS3 play WMVHD/VC-1 trailers from USB HDD?
Could PS3 player video/music file from network attached storage(NAS)?

BTW, congrats on the purchase.

Makes me want to get in line right now!
Any issues with BTB or WTW?
Makes no sense that the "soft" isn't there unless the PS3 is manipulating the picture. Since it's AVC, the NR filter isn't applied in the Samsung. The Samsung and Pioneer produce a similar image for those encodes yet the PS3 somehow sharpens them up???
After reading this I can't wait to get my on Friday. I just signed up for the blockbuster total access trial to get Bluray movies and games. Thanks for the updates and I am looking forward from some more.

Robert no.it doesnt sharpen it up. it just shows the picture in a very natural way. All movies from Disney i have seen so far like Narnia, 8th below etc have this softness to it. but for me it was simply to much softness. that softness with the ps3 is gone into normal. i watch now dinosaurs. 8 the below and i can say hey it looks normal. like i would expect it to look like.

normally movies like 8th below was to soft for me. and dinosaurs way to soft for me.

read the reviews at high digest for example. same problem. too soft. somehow with the ps3 that to much softness is gone. it didnt sharpen up the picture at all. it just shows it in the way i expected it to look like. Natural

Natural is for me saying the picture aint processed by filters, like remastered or something like that.

you have to see it actually to understand it best.

if you can give me website which VC-1 or HD-WMV trailers you want to check. let me know. i download it and check.

overall i still feel like i only discoverd 25% of the ps3 menu stuff. there is so much into this machine. simply amazing.

the wait was so fooking long. but so far for me it is all worth it. i wanted a true next generation machine. with next generation movie playback and next generation games. and it is here.

at least on the hardware front sony didnt fail. so far........ that is :)

I have the PS3 (I wasn't expecting to get one but just got lucky) and the upconversion quality (720p) is quite good. However, I still prefer the HD-A1 SD upconversion. Bitrate information is also available for dvd playback I believe. The browser works really well (I'm used to the PSP browser and its nice to be able to browse again in my AE-700 as I ditched the HTPC when I got the HD-A1). Got the PS3 mainly as a cheap way to play Blu-Ray exclusives (don't have time to play games nowadays since baby was born a year ago)

Still waiting for preordered Resistance and some US Blu-Ray titles (X3 and Kingdom of Heaven)

d3code - is the Japanese Kingdom of Heaven 50GB disc?

weapon_x11 or d3code: could you carry out the AVCHD tests in post #17: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&&#post8872530

Please let me know if the PS3 will play these files either from an external hard disk or from a DVD-R.

I thought the PS3 did not up convert SD?
Upconversion???So does the ps3 upconvert dvd SD to 720P,1080i and 1080p?
d3dcode,

I am in tokyo right now for a few days. Do you know if your player will PLAY US PS3 GAMES? (Not that it makes a difference, they're probably all sold by now).

grandmaster i tried to add my usb formatted windows xp harddisk but i dont know how to activate it on the PS3. if you have any idea how i am able to see the TS file i put on hardisk. from that link you gave me let me know.
d3code: I think that you'll need a USB flash memory card rather than a hard disk. Alternatively you could put the files on a memory stick or CF card. Or better yet just burn them onto DVD.

You are correct. No upconversion to 720p. Thats surprising considering sub-$100 dvd players can do this.

Checked again Thats why I wasn't happy with SD DVD playback compared to HD-A1. PS3 was at 720p (750p) and thats what the AE-700 was displaying and suddenly the projector switched to 480p (525p)

Placed the file from your link on a FAT32 CF card which I used with a Nikon D200. PS3 recognized the pictures but not the files. Should I reformat the CF card? FAT32?

Also how do I burn in DVD-R, via Nero as a data DVD?

grandmaster how do you want me to write the TS file to disc? in iso mode or as video file?

anyway i be back tommorow time to sleep.
weapon_x11: don't bother with your CF card, it looks obvious that it's not going to work. A shame that, but not unexpected. I'll see about creating an MP4 AVC file in HD for you to try instead.

For now, please burn the files onto DVD-R exactly as you suggest - via Nero as a data DVD.

Not sure if this is what you're wanting to know, but they've done some testing here:
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20061111/ps3.htm

Quote:
Reproduction of an AVCHD disk is also supported formally. When DVD-R and the DVD-RW disk which were recorded by "HDR-UX1" were put into the tray, it was especially reproducible satisfactory. Although it is a 8cm DVD disk, if it pushes in in the center of a slot, the disk for AVCHD accompanies an internal guide and is inhaled as it is.

Furthermore, it is not possible to take in the image data inside the AVCHD disk to HDD. It is playback only.

Tried again with reformatted CF card (FAT32) and memory stick pro and no go. Will check for DVD-R next.

They only appear to have tested a fully authored HDMV compliant AVCHD disk - which is essentially a kind of lame version of the full HDMV implementation. I am testing for file compatibility. The reason they *might* support this is that many of the AVCHD camcorders record the files directly.

The PS3 video playback support is actually rather lame, and I'm attempting to discover if Sony have thrown us any kind of bone here.

Thanks weapon_x11: I'll see about making an AVC MP4 file next, but if you could burn the files straight to DVD-R that would be great.

PS3 will only show files in certain directories by default. You have to enable the "show all files" option by pressing triangle to see everything. Could that be the problem?

Explained here: http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...hangeview.html

Also is it possible to just use the PS3's web browser to go here and download the files to your PS3?

No go even with DVD-R burned at slower setting (2x). My PS3 is currently not connected to the net but will try later. What video formats exactly can PS3 play?
Please d3code, I have a question that has has been bugging the hell out of me for the longest time. Look at the sticker on the bottom of the PS3 and tell me which voltages it can run on. Is it just 100-120V (US/Japanese) or can it go as high as 220V(Europe)?

I am looking to import one of these babies when they launch in the Americas next week and I need to know if I should order a voltage converter as well.

Thanks

Well that's the $64,000 question! According to the spec sheet, it should read AVCHD, but it doesn't specify exactly what it reads although the Watchexpress article shows it working with a fully authored disk. No support for the actual base files is really poor though.

In terms of what you can read from memory stick, it essentially it comes down to Memory Stick compliant AVC files along with MPEG2 TS and PS files.

I'll muck about with the the Memory Stick AVC format and see if I can get HD content squeezed into it.

Right now it's looking as though PS3's ability to playback video files is even more hobbled than Xbox 360. At least there with the WMV support we can actually playback HD files that are a reasonable filesize. Right now, with PS3, you can only playback MPEG2 HD files which are enormously wasteful in terms of bandwidth.

weapon_x11 or d3code.

Can you confirm this:

1. If IR port exists or not

2. If PS2 AV multi out component cables work with PS3

Thanks
@ kamikaze, it says ~100 V, 3.8 A, 50 and 60 Hz

@goenkar, it works with PS2 AV component cables but not sure about IR port
