Reproducing Deep Blacks On Plasma

I have a Philips 42" 9631 and have been very happy with the TV. I have noticed that during black or darker scenes on SD -- during credits or space scenes from "Star Wars" for example -- that I can see vertical columns of blackish and purplish colors, 8-10 across the screen. I think back to the vertical color/tint calibration done during DVE where I wasn't sure I was doing it correctly and wonder if this is why this shows up.

FWIW, I do NOT see this slight mis-coloration during a DVD playing of the same scenes.

Does anyone else remember seeing this? Is it likely to be a color, tint, contrast, or brightness issue?

I can live with it, it's only during SD pictures so I'm not that concerned and it doesn't jump out at you as a glaring defect. A sharp eye notices it, that's all, and watching 480p progressive DVD's and HD viewing has now given me that extra sharpness.

I admire your patience PP.

If there's an official thread for this model, you might try posting there to see if anyone else with the same unit has noticed similar issues. By SD though, I'm guessin that you're referring to standard-def cable signal, possibly the analog channels. If so, I suppose it could be differences between the analog and digital feed, and/or a calibration issue. A little more info about your feed might help others help you to sort it out. Could be as simple as dropping the Brightness control down a notch or two on the display, or tinkering with a few other settings.
